2012 Transfer Chance Me! Thread

Nguyen: Seroously check out last years stats. This years will be similar just a bit higher. I saw a couple of 3.3’s in the UC 2011 acceptance threads for CGS

Woah I sounded mean. I didn’t mean it like that :stuck_out_tongue: :)

Alright so this is what its looking like for school ill probably apply to or are within the reach in terms of pre-req

GPA: after fall 3.34 ; 3.42 if i do well in the spring, but i don’t think that will matter unless i try to appeal sd if i don’t get in.
TAG: UCSC for CGS
Applying to: UCI for CGS, UCSD for CS
I think i should have a shoot @ uci for CGS, but as some of you have stated UCSD is probably a long shot.
Want to try to apply to: UCD but according to assist missing Calc 3, Linear Algebra, + a Science Sequence, UCR I will meet the base requirement, but the additional 3 class required I have the Data structure, and discrete math, but for the physics part it says Mechanics and Thermal so i’m not sure if it will transfer if i only take the mechanics part of the class.
School i can’t apply to. UCSB (won’t have their pre-req), UCB, UCLA for obvious reasons,

yah i took a peak at all the stats before, but im not really sure what to expect since im not in the 3.5+ gpa range it get a bit tricky down here =(.

actually @@ i think i should take a step back and relax. And finish my Personal statement and see where i can go with a 3.34 after fall instead of taking up a bunch of space in a thread that suppose to help people =P. But thanks asphy and acoustics.

I am planning to transfer for fall 2012 from Community College to the following UC’s: UCSC, UCSB, CAL, UCLA (for the heck of it).

My only concern is my GPA, which tends to be REALLY low (an equivalent to a 3.06). My first semester of college I got really sick with a serious kidney infection and missed most of the semester. Consequently, I went from mostly A’s to all F’s. Because of my scholarship, I was reluctant to drop out of school. When I came back, I pulled up my grades from F’s to C’s in 3 short weeks. Sadly, those C’s dropped down my GPA severely. After that semester, I continued to maintain fairly good grade (all A’s and B’s). Although aside from my grades, I have an abundance of extracurricular activities. my ECs has been mostly centered around working with low income high school student, working with the latino community, and starting my own student action club at my community college. All of my ECs happens to work well with my intended major, sociology. Also, throughout my two years, I worked full time at a restaurant. I am a first generation student coming from a single family household. I am also Brazilian (if that helps). My question is, what are my chances in getting into at least one of those schools I mentioned above?

thanks,

Hi. I would say you’re in at UCSC AND idk about UCSB. It seems like a reach honestly. UCSC should be good! Good luck and if this year doesn’t work out, try again next year :)

So guys: I talked to my counselor who knows 99% if a person will get accepted or not to a non impacted major, he said if you have at least a 3.25 or higher, there’s a great chance you’re in (not for UCLA OR UCB). Schools like SD, I, Riverside, SB, Davis, etc. I have a 3.3 and I’ve seen people on here with lower gpa’s. Do good this semester and you’ll be fine. Try and get higher than a 3.2.

^ oh nice that sounds good :D

this really needs to be a sticky. people need to post in this thread their questions like all of us do.

whether accept or deny, were all equals.

Wondering what my chances are for getting into UC Berkeley and UCLA:

Transferring from California Community College (California Resident)
3.54 GPA w/ 65 units
Media Studies/Communication major
Graduated HS in 2007
Worked almost full time throughout high school and college
Had an internship at a huge action sports media company
in the Communications Club
Volunteered as a reading tutor, for a political party, and on a political campaign

That’s all I can think of for now. I am going crazy writing the best possible personal statement but just wondering what you guys think my chances are… be honest!

UCKITTY: I agree. People should post here and there. It’ll help a lot of people now and in the future. The wait is killing me  I already made a countdown haha.

Iv80xx: Do you know if comm is impacted in both schools? And have you checked out past years threads? I wish I could help you but I don’t know much about comm major! Someone chance him/her!

Oh by the way guys, since UCSD is my first choice, do you think the 3.5 TAG will mess people over with 3.3+ applying to a non impacted major?

I just discovered this website today so I am still looking around. They are both impacted for my major

I have guaranteed admission to UCSD and UCSC but I really have my heart set on Berkeley. I’m trying to do whatever I can to improve my chances.

Applying to:

  • UCLA
  • UCB/Cal
  • UCSD
  • UCD (Tag’d)
    Any other suggestions?

From: Cypress Community College
GPA: 4.0
Major: Political Science
Major Prereq: Done
IGETC: Almost complete, secondary English done in spring
EC’s:

  • Honors program
  • Volunteer for Carpenter Performing Arts Center (culture, yay!)
  • Dean’s List
  • Interned at an investment corp
  • Volunteered at local animal shelter briefly
  • Part-time job house-sitting/dog-sitting

I’m unsure whether or not I should include my internship and volunteering at the animal shelter. The internship is not really related to my major (although I worked in both law and accounting and I may do law school) and the animal shelter was really brief (20+ hrs).

My EC’s are extremely lacking. Should I add my high school EC’s? I was much more active then. When I applied as a senior in high school, I think my EC’s are what got me accepted to most schools (UCSB, UCD, UCSD, UCI). If I do, I would have these to add to the list:

  • 3 years Interact Club (community service), 1 year vice president
  • 2 years CSF
    ** Combined, I did 500 hrs+ community service
  • 2 year Robotics Club, 1 year secretary, 1 year vice president (also founding member)
  • Physics and Science Field Club
  • Red Ribbon Committee
  • WASC Committee
  • Poll working
  • Academic awards/honors
  • Volunteer at an at risk youth shelter

Ahaha. I had a lot of interests and I wanted to explore a lot so that’s why my ec’s are so…scattered. But I enjoyed everything I did.

@Objection

Your ECs are in no way lacking. You’re in everywhere.

Iv89: that’s good! I know…sometimes things might not go as planned so have your backup! Hm you should call LA and Berk and ask what the cutoff was for Comm last year.

@acoustic kitty
i think the 3.5 tag will help the people with 3.3 because of lower amount of tag-able applicants

Tomatoman: I thought that too…because it gives space for lower GPA applicants…I can finally sleep safe and sound :)

So what do you guys think my chances are at Berkeley and at UCLA?

Hello guys, can anybody chance me on my fall 2012 transfer app to these schools:Yale,Cornell,Harvard,Tufts,Dartmouth,Wash U in St Louis,Columbia,Brown,Bates C,Grinnell C,Gettysburg C,Macalester C,Reed C.Upenn……In high school, I applied to only my current univ due to my financial background and had a full ride luckily. I self-studied for the SAT using some of the books in my HS library and had 2030 and HS GPA of 3.90/4.0.I called the schools and they said my SAT’s are O.k with my country of origin and background.(I wanted to retake it)…Currently working on getting either a 4.0 or something very close to it. I am a freshman and taking courses in Gen Chemistry, Experiments in Gen Chemistry, Communications, Freshman Seminar, Intensive French (French 200) and Calculus 1.
Any suggestions on the apps will also be humbly welcome (…I have written my commonapp “why transfer” essay.PS Let me know if you can critique it for me and I will PM you).

Challenges faced Growing up.
A son of a peasant farmer and charcoal seller in rural Ghana,I have had finances as a major threat to my pursuit of education. In high school, I had to combine my academic work with selling items like gum on the streets after school to cater for my personal expenses in a bid to supplement my full tuition scholarship.it was really, a difficult experience that I sometimes decided to quit school. However, my determination and yearning as a first generation college student to change things around me kept me on. Through my work on the streets, I was able to raise money to register for the SAT to get this far. Coming from a disadvantaged background where majority of teenagers fall victims to teenage pregnancy ,drug abuse and eventual school drop-outs, I know the value of opportunities and have and will continue to make the most of them. My Yesterday and Today have been rough and tough but with God and the zeal to succeed, I know a better tomorrow waits.
