2012 Transfer Chance Me! Thread

PsychBruin: I’m done with my Chemistry series and biology! The rest will be done at at UC :slight_smile: Glad you are pre med too! Dont know too many premed people that aren’t majoring in biology woohoo! :)

@acoustickitty123

I think it’s smart to not major in Biology as a pre-med. You wanna have the highest GPA possible, and upper div bio courses can be a GPA killer. Also, if you’re transferring (and you choose a non-bio major), you can hold off on taking o-chem until you get to a UC. Med schools prefer that, from what I’ve heard. Apparently it’s frowned upon to do all of your pre-med pre-reqs at a JC.

The more pragmatic pre-meds I know all majored in Anthro or Psych or Sociology or Cog Sci.

^^Awesome! :)

hi, my major is chemistry

apply: UCSD,

GPA: 3.48, don’t know my fall grades yet.

i tag in for UCSD, but there is chance that i may not get 3.5 by the end of fall

overall a good PS

will complete IGETC by end of spring

Some outside activity.

can i get accepted without TAG? thx for all answers

hey any advice for taking pre-med courses as a non trad in the two years allotted left for undergrad?

@gnehs, how are your pre-reqs? I’m saying about 70%

@UCKitty

Well, it can be done, depending on your major. Med schools generally only require Calc I & II, Gen Chem, Physics for Life Sciences, and Organic. I’d say get started on the calc and chem the first year you transfer, so you have 8 units per quarter of technical coursework. After gen chem and calc, do physics and organic for your senior year. You should be able to get them done in addition to your major coursework, depending on your major.

Also, if you go to Davis, SD, Irvine, or LA, you should have a bevy of pre-med advisors to help you. Those schools all have medical schools and good pre-med support.

that sounds beautiful. i appreciate that advice!

although I’m waiting for acceptances, i still need to start getting focused on the “next step” if you know what I mean…

so if i did that route when would I apply to med school? after my junior year? do they allow you to apply and be contingent on courses?

Yeah, you would apply your senior year. You’ll want to take the MCAT after you finish your pre-reqs. But that might mean that you’ll end up applying the winter AFTER you graduate from college. Or, you could space your units out and try to stay an extra quarter. See how the financial aid works out. Try to get involved on campus in pre-med things immediately. Find out how you can volunteer at the hospital and get involved in clinical research. Be proactive, join pre-med clubs facebook groups and go to events that sound worthwhile, etc…

when will you apply? and what schools?

Schools applied to: LA, Berkeley, Davis, Santa Barbara, Irvine, Santa Cruz.
GPA: 3.7
Major: English.
Pre-reqs: Finished all the ones available to me (English 17 & English 45A; English 45B & 45C are not available).
IGETC: Done by Spring 2012.
TAG: No.
EC’s: Published poetry in my CC’s literary magazine. Other than that, not much to report. I did work as a copywriter for about a year and I’m currently conducting surveillance on the side as a private investigator (which involves typing up reports as well).

Chances for Berkeley? It’s my #1 choice. Thanks. :)

hi, UCkittychen

yea, my pre-reqs is about 70%, is chemistry major hard to get in? thx for reply

Can anyone chance me for UCI’s school of business? (merage…bus. admin-marketing) I heard their program is pretty competitive…from what I’ve heard…my gpa isnt too great compared to their average of 3.7+ (at least thats what i think it is haha)

applied as a transfer student from a CC (irvine valley)

GPA: 3.5
Major: business-marketing
Pre-reqs: finished accounting, econ, most GEs, getting calc out of the way now…
IGETC:should be done before i transfer
TAG: they dont participate in tag :confused:
EC’s: This is where I hope to excel among the other applicants…I work full time as a professional wedding photographer for an award winning studio in the LA/OC area…considered to be one of the top studios in the industry. We also run two other companies…one devoted to photography education (like an online magazine/forum…posting tutorials, workshops, etc) and we also run a product company making camera/electronic & gadget bags and accessories. I pretty much take part in almost every process & function that a business goes through…whether it would be sales, marketing, product design, SEO, branding, etc as well as the manual labor :slight_smile: I’ve learned SO much about a working business through the time i’ve spent here so far and I plan to stay with this company after I get my degree. I hope to bring something unique to our company and hopefully become a partner w/ my three bosses. (who were all CPAs at EY for a number of years and left to start up their own business!) Theres so much more I can say but thats all on the personal statement lol.

Hey you guys
Can you transfer to a UC with a D on your transcript but have not retaken the course? I’m asking for a friend of mine. Thanks guys :)!

@Speak
No chance. Please consider other schools as well.

@Acoustickitty123: Ohhh yaaay! I will be done with General Chem and Physics. I’ll have to do Organic Chem and Biology at UC or even at another 4 year. It’s better to be non-biology, exactly how asphyxiac stated it. :]

@UCkittychen: I am glad you are jumping ahead to the next step. Sometimes thats a bad thing, but in this case it’s not. Also, you have to take Biology for a year and don’t forget you need to take the MCAT. Applications are due June-Nov, based on rolling admissions of the previous year! :]

GPA: 3.09, potentially 3.2-3.38
Major and school: UCLA- Linguistics and Asian Languages and Cultures, UCI- Global Cultures, [CSUN and CSULB- Linguistics]
EC: Korean Club (?)
Prereqs: Not sure, currently passing Intro to Ling, Psycholing, LingAnthro, InterCultural Ling. Will take 2nd year of Korean in Spring, 4 years and AP Spanish in HS.
IGETC: Done.
Will be TAP certified… hopefully.
Upward trend.
PS: Talked about overextension, 27 units in one semesters, and taking the bus to and from school, going to 3 different schools at one time (2 now) AND my passion to help international students and teach English and travel.

Man, I really wanna get in UCLA but my GPA is scaring me. Plus I heard the last acceptance rate just sky rocketed for the Linguistics and the like.

Chance…?

P.S. I’m getting sick of the 3.8-4.0+'s so I also posted with my 3.09. HA!

UCLA no for sure, but yes for any csu.

GPA: 3.84-4.00
Only one semester of classwork. Extremely tough courseload - chemistry, biology, calculus, just to name a few. 27 units all A’s 1 B at the worst. 21 Units of AP credit.
UC Berkeley and UCLA Philosophy
Prereqs: Doing 3/4 Ucla Pre-reqs offered by all of the CCs in my area.
EC: run my own personal training business, College Track and Field team
IGETC: will be done by spring
PS: talked about how I missed my SIR deadline out of high school and my experiences transitioning from a magnet type school to a community college. Other essay was about how my short stature as a child who loved basketball sparked my interest in genetics. Both were 8.5/10 I’d say.

I just want to know if I’m safe with my stats?

@bear. ur in for both if u can maintain ur gpa round 3.7. In in the sense of real chance.

Any commentary on mine? :p
