2012 Transfer Chance Me! Thread

I hope that’s the case. I have a 3.1 GPA but unlike the other guy here with a 3.1, I’m not international, so I’m not sure if I’m exactly in the “rejection” line. I’m a sociology major so it’s not impacted. They raised the TAG GPA to 3.5 so the 3.0-3.4 applicants don’t get pushed out by the TAG applicants with the same GPA (remember last year? people with 3.0s were getting in through TAG while 3.5s were getting rejected with no TAG).

@MrMustache: exactly what I meant to say LOL.

I agree with you guys! Just wanted to hear what others have to say. Btw Vikram, I’m a sociology major too  glad to know you are top! Last year someone got in with a 3.27 and No tag. And my counselor told me someone got in with barely a 3.0. Sociology isn’t impacted at all…so we have a good chance :)

@kitty123: That gives me a lot of hope! I’ll be cautiously optimistic because it’ll make these months go by much faster. The overall admit GPA averages for UCs are usually higher than what they should be for non-impacted majors as the engineering/psych majors boost the average. Don’t lose hope! I worked really hard this semester to even get to a 3.14 (from a 2.8 the semester before) so I hope they look at this upward trend favorably.

Any more input from y’all would be nice!

Yeah! I was in the same boat as you. Is that your GPA including fall? I applied to backup schools just in case I dont get into my top choice.

Kitty123: Glad we’re sharing the same boat! Yeah, that’s my GPA including this fall. I did too. I applied to a few CSUs and lower level UCs

Do you know what UCs I can get into with that gpa?

UCR and UCSC for sure  I think you have a nice shot at UCD. UCI…SD Hm iffy because of the tag and stuff. But Soc at UCSD is really not impacted …so you have a chance :)

I’m not sure if it worth it to study sociology at UCR. :(

anybody know any major that worth to study at UCR? or i will make a thread to ask ^^

^engineering for sure, and maybe business too

UCR is a UC afterall. It’s not a bad school. It’s just not ranked high like UCLA or UCB. Meh. I would personally choose any UC over UCR…but not everyone has that choice.

^ I agree with kitty123. It’s not as bad as people who get into the higher level UCs make it out to be. With all due respect, I wouldn’t transfer there, but I know quite a few capable students who want to. I guess it’s all a matter of circumstance and preference.

I wish I could chance people but I’m usually the one on the receiving end of assistance when it comes to questions about transferring. However, I’ll try and help with other questions.

:) As for now…Merry christmas! Happy kwanza happy hannukah!

Question: are there varying degrees of a major being “impacted”? I’m applying for molecular bio + immunology. The rate looks pretty low to me, but the major is definitely something that I’m interested in pursuing.

^Yes! I’m assuming you’re applying to UCLA…and that is impacted at UCLA. It’s a biological science major so it’s impacted. A UCLA representative told me they’ll be accepting only about 300 Human Biology applicants. And 600 (guess) immunology applicants. Although both majors are impacted, one is more impacted than the other due to how many applicants they are willing to accept because of the limited amount of space.

@Kitty123: In that case, what should the acceptance percentage roughly be for a major to be considered “impacted”? I mean, you’ve got majors with high acceptance rates but with only a few applicants lurking about.

I think impacted mean limited amount of space or highly demanded. 300 spots and 600 applicants mean impacted.

300 spots and 250 applicants mean not impacted.

Also mean highly selective.

^exactly! 15-20% acceptance rate would be for an impacted major. If you’re applying with a 3.5+ GPA, I’d say you have a good chance. The 15-20% is for the pool of applicants applying. 800 people apply…15% of that 800 get in. It all also depends on how many people are applying to your major. Where are you applying to anyway? Is your GPA good or fair?

Chances?

I was born and lived in California my entire life except the past 2 years while I have been in community college. I moved because of financial issues and want to go back. I pointed this out in my application…maybe it will make them think of me as an in-state transfer? lol

Applying to: UCLA, Berkeley, Santa Barbara, San Diego

CC GPA: 4.0 (math and physics major so the classes are on the level of calc 3, diff-eq, calc-based physics, linear algebra, chemistry, biology, java programming, etc.)
Also, I know I am applying from OOS, but I will have all of the types of classes they want completed as shown on IGETC

ECA’s:
-Dance/gymnastics training/performances
-Chamber singers, baritone section leader, performed in musicals, concerts
-Math/Physics tutor at my CC
-3 hrs a week teaching adult learners English as a 2nd language (comm service)
-Phi Theta Kappa member
-Applying for Department of Energy Summer Internship which I think I have a good chance of getting

Essays- I think very good, other people do too. Wrote about passion and drive for science and specifically physics for the first prompt, and wrote about my contrasting passion and experience in art through my time spent with dance in 2nd prompt

I think I’m mostly worried about the fact that my essays are concentrated in my passion for the biological sciences and how my life’s revolved around that. Think adcoms’ll get the message? Bah.

Nice GPA. Remember, a 4.0 is the highest GPA you can get in a CC. first UCs will give priority acceptance to in state transfers. Id say youre in at all with that GPA. How many prereqs are you missing for UCLA and UCB?
