@Mikey, I feel okay about UCB…I don’t care much since I live in LA and plan on going to UCLA lol. I’m much more confident about UCLA, as there were several people on this forum who got into UCLA Business economics with much lower gpas/stats. What are your stats?

Applying this year from CCC. Transferring 2013

Applying to:
UCB
UCLA
UCSB (going to TAG)
UCSD

Current Transfer GPA: 3.1
By the end of Fall: 3.4 or 3.5

Major: Spanish

Completed all pre-reqs and IGETC

URM with household income of $70,000
Somewhat of an upward trend of grades

ECs: Tutoring 8th grader literacy at local library since April 2011. 16 hours a week.
Started taking community college courses my junior and senior years of high school. I am currently 18 and I’ll be 19 in November.
Planning: work experience, summer internship or UCB open to public class, involvement in clubs

Member of UCB TAP (80-90% admittance rate)

I’ll chance back.
Thanks

Chance Me! I am a fall 2013 applicant, applying this year.

I am applying to UCB, UCLA, and UCI. (possibly other ones as well but these are my top ones.)

Major: Political Science
GPA: 3.8~3.89 (by the end of fall 2012; heard they dont look at grades of spring)
IGETC: yes
Pre-reqs: yes
TAP (UCLA): yes / TAG: no
ECs: none yet. (this is the part I am worried about. I will be joining the Alpha Gamma Sigma Honor Society this spring semester which will work as a club and I will engage in some community service within the society as well. I will try to join other clubs as well and work more voluteering hours. I never had a job and I dont think I will but will that work against me? how much will I be hurting my chances if I dont have ECs at all?)

Im a Korean as well. LOL.
THANKS !!

@wizard55 Thats great news! I really hope you get in to UCLA… I have a 3.7 gpa, an outstanding upward trend in grades, outstanding post high school work experience, great essay that demonstrates my interest in Haas and my leadership/communication skills… and four Haas prereqs left for spring. I applyed to LA and Irvine too.

Upward trends are great and your leadership positions can be positive as well. The only thing that might hurt you is the 3.7, but I still believe you have a chance.

Yeah you might be right. There are so many things we can’t control now. We just have to be assertive and wait. Keep working hard, wizard.

Y U NO CHANCE ME?!

Alright, updated stats, CHANCE ME!

UC GPA: 3.94
Schools Applied to: UCB/UCLA(TAP)/UCD(TAG)
Major: Political Science; most likely going to try and double major in Political Science and Rhetoric at UCB if I get in.
Pre-req completion: All pre-reqs are done except for my math requirement which will be finished in spring of 2012.
ECS: None really, just Honors program/work
Additional Info: IDK if this affects anything, but I took pretty heavy courseloads (21/18) during my last 2 semesters, and will be graduating with 70 units.
Essays: I guess they were alright, but it’s hard to judge your own essays…

Thanks.

I heard that many of the UC’s are looking at the
English and mathematics grades. Such as
English1A English1B and math. To help with their decisions.

That’s really good.

Even UCSD, UCSB, UCR?

@benny

you’re in everywhere! :D

I applied to UCI for poly sci as my first major but picked CLS as my alternate. If I am accepted as Poly Sci, how do I choose CLS instead?

Odd. I feel like there aren’t that many science majors applying (I’m an MCB/immunology). Everyone here seems to be a liberal arts major :/

I would be grateful if someone would chance me. First a little background…

34 years old

Hispanic and first generation college student &

Learning disabled (enrolled in Disabled Student Program)

As everyone knows, you can’t run away from substandard grades, in mid-nineties was dismissed from CCC. 7 years later after diagnosis returned to CCC graduated as paralegal in 2008 with 3.80 GPA from final school attended.

Combining all grades with 14 units left to complete IGETC (including pre-reqs) my combined GPA is 3.17 (earned an “A” in stats during FALL 2011, but not calculated in GPA)–however, this includes academic renewal and an “F” grade that cannot be repeated as the course has not been offered in over 3 semesters and its equivalent is not offered in other CCC’s.

Applied to UCI as Criminology, Law and Society Major. My alternate major is Social Ecology.

Don’t mind TAG for FALL 2012, but would love to get in this year.

P.S I am in awe of all the young people on this thread determined to transfer, and offering encouragement to others. Please don’t give up your dreams, in the end its all we have.

Please chance #1379. I’ll chance back :]

If you mean me, I’ll be glad to; however, I’ve never chanced before, so I’ll do my best. What I can do is this, while everyone puts forth impressive stats, I see things from a different perspective because I am older. I guess I would say that I see the value in a diverse student body, and humanistic qualities that you would bring to whatever university you apply to.

UCDrome: I like the last part of ur post. I need some of that motivation. I term like no one is going to accept me.
but I’m doing my best.

@ HoneyFlower: You can only do the best that you can do. I saw your post and the grade you were concerned with. Why did you get an “F”? I could wrap my head around a “D”, but why an “F”? Did you forget to drop? When I see anyone posting about taking a spanish class, I immediately wonder if they are spanish speakers. If you were, wouldn’t an admissions person wonder the same? By all means take the course, improve your GPA, but don’t stop at the one spanish course, take another.

I’ll be honest, I wasn’t expecting to try to transfer this year. I had plans to TAG for this year and go to UCI during FALL 2013, but a relative encouraged me to try. You know the reason why I didn’t TAG during 2011? I couldn’t get a STATS class! That was the only reason! One lousy class. I had the GPA, heck, I nearly had it when UCI raised the TAG. Was it the end of the world for me? Almost, so you know what? I tried a regular transfer. You might say I’m getting two bites at the apple! Yes, you might have a GPA, that at the moment, may not be very competitive, but that’s not to say you can’t get that up to 3.3 (that’s what you said, correct?) Try to think of it this way, you just went through the experience and stress of applying as a transfer. Now you have an entire semester and summer to get those grades up and go in as a TAG–that’s assuming the worst—that you didn’t get in.

Ever see that movie “Cast Away” with Tom Hanks? There was no way he was getting off that island until that piece of metal showed up. Like the character said, “You never know what the tide might bring.” May be for you, you will find a renewed sense of determination and some butt! Wouldn’t it be nice if you TAGGED with a 3.3 or 3.4?

All the best,

-A

@ PsychBruin: I’ll chance, but I’ve never done this before, so take it with a grain of salt…

UCLA: The average GPA (2011) for those that applied was 3.37, but the average admit had a GPA of 3.81–of course that was for pre-psych majors. I did see a major listed as linguistics-psych whose stats were a bit more relaxed in terms of GPA. Those stats were 3.37 applied 3.57 average GPA admitted 3.52 GPA enrolled.

Your 3.7 is nothing to shy away from, what I think gives you a fighting chance are your E.C’s. Now you are very involved both in community, school, and within a socio-religious context. But my question is, how many people do the exact same thing? Quite a few, actually. Here’s where you could shine, your Personal Statement. I know you stated that your PS was very personal, but what was your subject? Any obstacles you had to overcome? For example, was there a reason you didn’t go to a UC right out of H.S? The reason I bring this up is because I know a person, who like you, did very well in CCC, but didn’t get into UCLA. This person appealed. You know what? That person made such a compelling argument, that they actually got in! Not only did they get in, but went to UCLA law school as well. What I’m trying to say is, yes, you’ve got a chance for some consideration, but if it doesn’t go the way you want, you may still have a compelling argument for admission based on appeal. By the way, going in undeclared for social sciences the admit GPA was only 3.36, with the average GPA of those who enrolled was only slightly lower at 3.33. Just food for thought.

CAL: I can’t recall your major, was it sociology? I know Berkeley is a little non-traditional, so your EC’s are to me like background music, great on ambiance, but still hungering for sustenance. You would be a great addition, but again you’d be leaning on your Personal Statement to humanize you and add diversity to the campus. The Fall 2011 transfer student profile was 3.60 to 3.95 GPA. Don’t forget one of the considerations is demonstrated interest in the major. I believe you were actively involved in the Psy club? 3 years, right? Berkeley is looking for what you can bring to the campus. Let’s hope those personal statements where a reflection on that. I do think you have reason to be nervous about admittance, because you are a good candidate for admission based on your EC’s and upward trend on grades, but now your Personal Statements will be scrutinized. As you know it’s more difficult to remain motivated in a CCC, because it is so easy to drop. You have demonstrated a willingness to stay involved, but also the maturity of a person who began working at a young age. You have learned proficiency at balancing work, life, and school. It seems you have done all you can, now your Personal Statement will have to do the rest.
Please keep me posted. Best of luck!
