@Honey: * I meant kick some butt! However, getting some butt…gravy, just gravy.

Are you considering CLS as a your first choice? My question, have you finished pre-reqs for CLS? My first thought would be to notify UCI about your change of heart, but then again it may make it appear as though you are indecisive. That’s never an impression we want to make. If you are accepted as Poly Sci, would that mean that all spots for CLS have been filled by the time you find out about your acceptance? I believe you’re the one that calls admissions whenever you want a definitive answer. I would suggest calling and asking.

Hope you get accepted to your first choice!

thanks drone. surely not indecisive if I had it already listed as my alternative major.

their are no pre-reqs to CLS really. Just psych and stats.

I see your point. Yes, I am aware of the pre-reqs (that’s my intended major). Either way, I wish you success.

HEY! awesome! can you give me some insight, do you know the rigor/curriculum, etc.

Aside from my politics/Dexter fascination I’m using it as an interesting gateway major to dental school.

I have a law background, not a lawyer. I’m actually a paralegal. Let me say that the curriculum does not appear like anything I encountered in school. Let me preface that by saying my paralegal courses do not transfer. The only course I see that might give me a leg up, is the legal research course.

When I would go my counselor for advice, I would pretty much get shoulder shrugs. I was actually told (to my face) that my degree in paralegal studies (and paralegal certificate) would not even help me demonstrate an interest in the major! Straight from the UCI website I believe this sums it all up.

“The Department of Criminology, Law and Society conducts research and teaching activities that focus on the causes, manifestations, and consequences of criminal behavior; methods of controlling criminal behavior; and the relationships and interactions between law, social structure and cultural practices. Courses include overviews of American legal systems, forms of criminal behavior, legal and criminal theory, social science and the law, victimology, and regulatory issues, in addition to substantive areas of law such as family, criminal, environmental, immigration, procedural, and constitutional.”

Hope to see you in those classes, assuming of course, that I’m accepted. By the way, would you mind chancing me? I’m on the previous page. I have come to admire your assessments, and would appreciate your input.

Hmm, i appreciate it. Do you know anyone that has or is in the CLS major?

Isn’t it really really renowned by the FBI & CIA?

well, you have a VERY INTERESTING story. You are a URM & Disabled. I believe UCI will disregard your past track record, especially that long, especially with what we call around here, and “upward trend”.

CollegeConfidential, I am sure many will agree with me, is WAYYYYY better than many of the counselors at our schools. We all help each other very extensively, despite differences and slight arguments. I initially arrived on this board as a blinded, bio major looking to get into CSU then go on to dental school, but soon learned many things and learned about TAG, and that I could be non-trad, learned about the benefits of being a URM myself (PM me for details), and many other things. I use to think UC was for the REALLY REALLY SMART kids with 4.0’s. But it turns out, well my measly 3.4 might allow me to make it into quite a few UC’s as long as a I complete requirements for my major and show desire (within the year I had, because i came here about a year ago, watching everyone transfer who have somewhat abandoned this site -________-)

Anyways, I strongly believe you will make it to UCI, CLS is a great major and likewise i hope to see you around classes and campus.

I am interested to know tho, do you know how financial aid will play out for you? The reason I am asking is because I just turned 23, and will be 24 next year, and am seeing all this information about there will be a transitional change in financial aid between 23> and >23, So next year when I am 24 should I expect a substantial decrease in financial aid?

Anyways, welcome to CC.

@banndie,

why would you just apply to ONE UC with a GPA like that. I mean you could have more than likely been admitted to many other wonderful UC’s,

UCI, UCSC, UCSB, UCR,etc

If you don’t make it to UCLA, it will have been a grave mistake on your part for only applying to UCLA, with its prestige and all, sorry to be so critical, but it just makes me so angry that YOU could have had other “for sure” options and backup schools…

@dh you will get in to UCI on appeal at the latest. especially with those EC’s, I have a greater GPA than you (slightly, 3.4) but not nearly as good EC’s as you.

If you wrote an awesome PS and did awesome in fall, you will make it. don’t worry. Pressure is lifted a lot this year because TAG isn’t available everywhere, and the thing about UCI TAG, is that you had to have the Math completed PRIOR to fall, so I bet not many people TAG’d to UCI, because they probably were gonna take math either fall or spring, because Math is USUALLY on the bottom of everyone’s to-do-list.

UCI is my desire, UCSD is my second, hopefully were celebrating on march (although i heard last year, UCI rolled out some transfer decisions last year in february!)

@dark91, listen to Fer on that one, he is the Business guy, and researches those requirements and stuff extensively, so hold his chancing very solidly.

@Ferarri, you are right about OriginalFlavor, that user’s GPA is entirely too low. Especially for engineering. Guys, Engineering at UCD/UCSD/UCB is what I call “crabby”, a lot of people want that, and are performing very stellar. It’s very tough because you need to usually do the entire Math sequence and have a pretty thick GPA. the one’s who I am not chancing are examples of those who are applying to engineering but have awesome GPA’s for engineering. If you are applying for engineering, look through this thread extensively and you will see how you fair against many of your peers.

ESPECIALLY at UCB, thats like the king of kings. You need to have at least like a 3.6/3.7 to sleep well at night. 3.0/3.1 IS NOT going to cut it for engineering at UC.

And 2013 transfers, if you are reading this, you better get it together too, last year UCSD RAISED their TAG GPA, and I am hearing that they possibly might eliminate TAG from their school altogether, so don’t rely too much on trying to meet the “minimum” by TAG’ing. seriously.

That is so infuriating! How could you have ever doubted that you were not UC material! I’ve seen the way you express yourself on these boards. A 3.4 is something to be proud of, it may not be the highest GPA, but it shows dedication. I have NO doubt you will get in to a UC.

The program may be highly regarded, but there may be some confusion to people. While you see the FBI and the CIA, these aren’t attorneys or those with legal minds. That’s more the DOJ. Do I think this could help with profiling? I don’t see why not, this program coupled with psychology would make a great combo. I remember a client we had whose sister had a Ph.D in some type of legal studies. Although she understood various aspects of the law, she could not argue the law. As a paralegal, I know procedure. I understand the law, as its been taught to us in broad strokes. I can understand what an attorney needs and wants. If he’s specific, I see where he is coming from. But in no way am I equipped to argue the law. I can make an argument and have a real attorney obliterate me in a second. Of course, I don’t have much experience in the field, I could never compare myself with an attorney. A good paralegal should never do that anyway. Sorry for the rant, I am just so passionate about my field…it leads to tangents.

I think of this major as an applied science. We take what we learn and apply it to whatever our eventual careers may be…social worker, police officer, may be a lead off to law school, etc. While I don’t know anyone in the major, I do find it to a very exciting area of study. If I could, I would love to take Legal Studies at Berkeley. I find your curiosity in different fields fascinating. Poly Sci, CLS, dentistry…wow. Tell me, what have you done in terms of science courses? Would love to PM, I could learn a lot from you. What I can say, is that nobody I’ve encountered knows anything about the CLS program. I have heard that it is wonderful and well regarded. My hope is to take what I learn and apply it to helping others. I would love to work as paralegal for ACLU or any big firm that handles pro-bono. If the Innocence Project needed paralegals, I’d be honored to help.

Forgot about your financial aid question. I can tell you that when I was 25, it was the time where parent’s income was no longer a consideration. This was a good thing because it opened doors for financial aid. As the economy continues its downward trend, you can expect more lax rules regarding financial aid. As a matter of fact, the Blue and Gold aid is something I had never heard of. I think you said you were 22, I believe your parents income will be a mitigating factor in any financial aid consideration. Have you been diligent about scholarships? There are programs that give some loan forgiveness. A relative of mine taught in a bad neighborhood for a couple of years and that made a dent in student loan forgiveness. We are in a time where B.A degree is expected and not commended. In my time (high school) you were pretty much guaranteed a job, if you went to college. What I do see is kids picking majors that pretty much guarantee they won’t be getting a job right out of the gate. I know people going through this. It’s heartbreaking to see a UC History grad, going right back to CCC. That’s right, he went back to try to earn a degree in Aerospace engineering. Since I’m not in your age group I really can’t say how financial aid is shaping up for someone under 25.

Ha what is this CLS program? The principles of the secrecy of North Korea? I have looked around the internet as well and have found NOTHING. Ha thanks though, I am glad you believe my GPA is worthy, there are some very powerful GPA and academic attentive people on this board as well, I guess this last year was all inspiration from them.

Your point about CLS makes sense. ■■■■■ i am IN ACLU club at school, it is awesome. I also get the emails from them. I am in international relations right now but might possibly drop it because I am in limbo about my decisions between UCI/UCSD and most importantly my major. I know I will just go to UCI though, it’s more laid-back imo. Are you IN Socal?

I though, after seeing Mitt Romney’s financial success am not too shy of continuing on with Poly Sci and obtaining that J.D. SLASH MBA, ha. I HIGHLY enjoy poly sci, and it interest me a lot, but i am also paper chasing. Dentistry, I just can’t leave the desire I have for that field, but I do enjoy helping people VERY much, so much people in the world are in need of help right now. Somalian women and child being eaten in the middle of the dark by lions because they are looking for food because they are starving, and many other stories.

Anyways. How is the field looking for lawyers? A lot of people on top-law-school.com is saying it’s highly pointless, what is your opinion since you sorta have first hand.

PS. please feel free to reply here, but I will PM you back in response.

PS. my mother makes 0, and i have no father (in the picture or known)

Sorry about that. I got your financial aid confused with another. Yes, I remember. If you have a parent that has 0 income, you really don’t have an issue. I doubt you make an very much in the jobs you do have. If you haven’t already, fill out a FAFSA stat! You will be eligible for very handsome awards. I’m sure of it.

UCDROME: Yeah I was going to drop to get a w but It ended being to late. And I am a Spanish speaker I just wanted to learn a new language which was a bad idea. Right now its winter session and I’m taking English1a and Com9 I’m trying so hard to get really good grades but I hope that the UC people acknowledge my hard work.

Sent from my Desire HD using CC App

UCDrome: yeah ur right and I like that quote. That’s the only grade that messed me up the rest cummunilative I have A’s and B’s but Idk. It’s so stressful.

Hey UCdrone,
Do you happy to know if a 3.34 would be enough for a nonimpacted major at UCSD?

Which major? Tell me which comment number your stats are on and I’ll try, again I’ve never really done this, but then again, we all want a second opinion and some reassurance. After all, we are in the same boat. On the flip side I would totally appreciate your assessment of me. I’m on page 94 (I think). One thing to note about me, my GPA drops due an “F” that can’t be retaken and my paralegal courses aren’t transferrable, plus the 2 (“A”) math courses I had to take to work my way up to STATS.
