2012 Transfer Chance Me! Thread

Hey, I’m really unsure of whats gunna happen to me

I’m applying to UCR, UCI, UCSC, UCD

I went to San Jose State my freshman year from 2007-2008
GPA : 3.1

Next semester went to Mt. San Antonio College in LA Fall 2008
GPA : 3.5

Then went home to College of San Mateo from Spring 2009 - Present
GPA : 2.73

Mother lost her job in 08 and I’ve been working part time (20-40 hrs per week) to help support the family since. Recently my parents are allowing me to take out loans in order to go to college. My first Choice is UCI. Oh Yeah, I’m applying as a psychology major.

I finally get a chance to write one of these  so here it goes.

-Schools in order of preference: UChicago, Wellesley, Barnard, Berkeley, UCSC, SFSU, Portland State, UCLA.

-Major: Geography, Development Studies (Berkeley), Environmental Studies (Wellesley & Barnard), Global Economics (UCSC).

-GPA: 3.0 I have over 90 units so it’s hard to bump up my gpa, even if I get straight A’s in 18 units this semester it will barely reach 3.1.

-IGETC: finished.

-Pre-reqs: missing 2 for Berkeley, will complete by Spring.

-E.C.: president, vice-president and i.c.c. rep of science club (not at the same time, of course), senator in student government, executive member in student government, chair of policy committee, review board for i.c.c., publicist for feminist collective, and I have been a mentor for middle school kids, some disabled, for 6 years.

-Essays: I have so many to work on -.- but for the personal statement I will write how traveling California and briefly working in Guatemala made me interested in Geography/Development Studies. For the second part I will very briefly touch on my drug usage and drug overdose at age 16, how I embraced my sexual orientation, managed to stay in high school (almost dropped out), and worked my way through college.

-Work: I’m having trouble with this one. I have definitely worked but they’re not jobs where I’ve needed to provide my social, or do taxes for. I worked taking care of children, cleaning houses, and tutoring low-level math (pre-algebra, algebra, and geometry) by word of mouth.
I fell like the people looking at my application will either a) laugh and think my work experience is a joke or b) tell me to give myself a pad in the back, and thank me for trying.
-Do you guys think I should add my work under the work section or not?

-Hooks:
first generation
hispanic
^ most seem to have the latter so I don’t think it counts as much.
gay
took honors courses, even though I’m not able to join the honors program 'cause of my gpa -.-

-Other: I haven’t received any D’s or F’s, but I did have 3 W’s, which I’m re-taking. I received one of the W’s because I found it difficult to keep up with my coursework, I broke my right arm in a roll over car accident. My gpa is low because I got C’s in high-unit classes. I have some awards too, but I’m too lazy to post them.

Geez, now that I’ve laid out what I will write in my application, I realize how intense and weird my life must seem. Anyways, I would love any advice or input you guys can provide. :)

Applying to : UCLA UCB UCSD UCSB UCI

Status: current student at UCSC
Transfer Major: Biochem
GPA: Will be around 3.85ish by end fall 2011 quarter

Pre-Req: will have completed gen chem o chem physic bio series & cal series and two classes short of finishing GEs

Personal Statement: fairly strong, good life experiences

EC: employment for student organization on campus

joxygirl - Sorry if I misread your post but if you won’t finish all your pre-reqs by the end of Spring 12 then you won’t be accepted.

To UCB anyways. UCD, UCSD, and UCI are more lenient I think.

^ your reply is wrong, GE/Breadth =/= pre-reqs.

[Office of Undergraduate Advising: Summary of Degree Requirements](http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu/requirement/summary.html)

@MeStudyStuff and @ UCkittychen

Ok, so who is right? lol.

is this thread restricted only for UC schools or national schools?lol

this is the uc transfer subcategory to the transfer section. we mostly are familiar with UC reqs.

Joxygirl
-3.8 GPA
-Pre-reqs done by Spring 2012 except 1
-IGETC done by Spring 2012
-Sociology Major
-CCC student
-excessive amounts of ECs

UCkittychen - ^ your reply is wrong, GE/Breadth =/= pre-reqs.

Office of Undergraduate Advising: Summary of Degree Requirements

Hey UCKittychen, she said her IGETC will be done but also said she will not finish all of her pre-reqs by the end of Spring 12. The transfer matrix I posted states, “Which colleges, schools or majors require completion of specific major-preparation coursework?”

Berkeley - “All”

http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/counselors/files/ETS11_TransferMatrix.pdf

What am I missing? Can you please explain just so I don’t spread misinformation in the future?

Thanks

No.

No.

(3)=3 For information on selection procedures and required major prerequisites at UCB, consult admissions.berkeley.edu and [Welcome to ASSIST](http://www.assist.org).

No.

I am guessing this is what you are referring to, this is saying ALL schools require some sort of specific coursework related to major, so then you navigate to assist.org and you get this:

see now? had this been a very impacted major like HAAS or Engineering (what berkeley is known for) then you would have to complete all. It just in essence sounds ridiculous to make one complete EVERY pre-req for sociology.

Ahhhh… Thanks for clearing that up for me.

“Which colleges, schools or majors require completion of specific major-preparation coursework?”

From that question, I thought it meant the absolute completion of pre-reqs before transfer, seeing as how it’s a transfer matrix. But it is just saying the major requires pre-reqs to be completed. Just a general statement.

indeed, but their is a subscript of 3 to refer to assist for which majors need minor-majority-all pre-reqs completed.

@MeStudyStuff and @ UCkittychen

THANK YOU TO BOTH OF YOU FOR CLEARING THIS UP FOR ME. I appreciate all the help you both have provided. Very helpful. Thank you x10!

Oh one more quick question, what are my chances for UCLA? Just a thought. . .

I am a male California resident studying at CCSF, will be applying to Berkeley (Haas), UCLA (Biz econ), UCI (Biz Admin), USC (Marshall).

49 units completed, taking 13 now and 13 in spring
Cumulative GPA - 3.94
Prereq GPA - 3.9

All As except the English 1A, pretty bumped about it.
All prereqs done except English 1B (taking now)

IGETC done except a bio class.
Foreign Language completed by taking SAT.

ECs - Alpha Gamma Society
Alpha Beta Gamma (Business Society)
Investment Club at school

Working at AMC part time on weekends.

Still thinking of good story for essays.

I know the schools i am applying to are really really tough, so i will appreciate any advice or comments good or bad. Thanks

@ wannamama

Your overall GPA looks good. But for econ Fall 2011, avg GPA is 3.95. I know your cumulative is a 3.94 right now, I think you could be able to raise that to at least a 3.95 just to be safe. and you should also try to raise your prereq GPA, which may even be more important than cumulative GPA, a bit higher.
Also, your EC’s are major-related which is good. But also try to add in some leadership here and there for this semester- perhaps an internship, research, student government, and/or volunteer work

I may not be 100% correct in my comments, but I hope it helps to give you some thoughts! Best of luck!

@ strive

I dont think i can raise the Prereq Gpa espicially for haas (no 1 choice). Since Haas prereqs are a total of 27 units, getting a B in one class means the highest i can get is 3.9. But i wont let that affect me, on the website it says a few B’s wont hurt your chances. And for the Ecs, i am trying to find something that displays leadership qualities. And thanks for commenting.

UCI for sure wanna, USC, screw USC.

i say 75/25 for UCLA and 70/30 for UCB.

Any ideas on my chance of acceptance at Berkeley?

Intended Major: Comparative Lit
GPA: 3.83
IGETC: Will be finished by Spring 2012
Major Prereqs: N/A
ECs/Work Experience: Very Little (Dean’s Honor List & part time job/random activities in HS)

Attended a CSU Freshman year, transferred to CCC for Sophomore year.
