♠ 2012 UCSB Transfer Decisions Thread ♠

WOW @Ravous: What the heck is going on…3.83 rejected? That’s a really big shocker. I suggest you all call if you care and share the news with the rest of us. That’s ridiculous. And your majors aren’t impacted I believe.

It seems people who did not finish their English and Math requirements at the end of Fall 2011 are getting rejected.

but if english is IP what’s the problem? I mean honestly, we’re born into the language. if UCSB has a policy of rejecting people because their english and math is IP then they should make it public. my counselor said everything was awesomepossom as long as I had it done by Spring.

@lawlking: I didn’t finish my math requirement, so maybe it’s just the english requirement. I was told the same thing as SanFranciscoKid - that getting them done by Spring was alright. I even called 2 of the campuses and they said the same. o.O?

Whether it’s fair or not, they may not want to run the risk of accepting you and then have something pop up (ie. you dropped / didn’t pass your Math and English course).

My application status is still pending and I did complete my Math and English by Fall 2011.

Well, in UC’s–since they are a research school–you are going to be writing ALOT. Literally, Research papers and research exams. Writing research paper is all you are going to be doing at a UC. People who are seen as finishing basic English requirements are seen as a risk. Besides, you have ANOTHER English class to take once you transfer to a UC.

Only thing I could find about English/math regarding when it must be completed:

Please note: Students are strongly encouraged to begin taking English composition and mathematics course work early in their academic careers. Early completion of the minimum requirements for admission makes an applicant more competitive for admission spaces available.

[ *] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected:I was initially expecting to get rejected for biopsychology, but was pretty confident that i would get in for psychology since i had most of the pre reqs done. 4/14 pre reqs + admission → it can be done…good luck to those still waiting!! I also completed my schools honors program and was tap certified(but this is mostly beneficial for UCLA) so idk if they took that into consideration.

^^^i dont know how to do that format bs. yes i’m a n00b

Yeah its weird you guys are getting rejected. I can’t see why you would. It never hurts to call. As my mom would say “A closed mouth doesn’t get fed”. Give admissions a call. Sometimes we apply to so many schools that we can mess up whether it inputting a grade wrong or forgetting to check a box. If a school makes a mistake they usually will rectify and have no problem offering admission. There numbers account for theses types of situations.

): i cant believe Ravous got rejected with a 3.83 gpa for psychology ): ): i have a 3.73, i’ve finished my math and english, but my physical science class is in progress. now im kind of scared lol oh well what’s done is done. /: i just hope i get into UCI or ill be pretty sad.

Im sry for those rejected, I’m still pending and I finished my english when applied but not math. I passed the math class in Winter 2012 though, so i hope that it doesn’t affect me.

@lawl

why would i have another english class to take after finishing the two pre-reqs? i took 4 years of HS english including AP. It seems rather silly to reject people with high GPA’s while accepting applicants with mediocre stats just because they finished ONE extra english class. Well whoopdyDOO.

yes im bitter. this is ridiculous.

^^Because UC requires different writing structure than the one taught to us. Besides, the one we learned at CC is basic college writing.

basic college writing? i know how to write a research paper. im quite familiar with most standards, including apa and mla. it isn’t rocket science. this just SUCKS. ill call and see what they say…but i dont know what I’m going to do if it doesn’t work out.

APA and MLA is basic writing format. It’s basic skills.

I’m talking about a legit hardcore research paper. Not just a MLA essay with an introduction, body paragraph, and conclusion; which may seem advance to us but its actually basic writing.

Here is an example of a research paper, you will be learning to write like this: <a href=“Publications | Center for Studies in Higher Education”>Publications | Center for Studies in Higher Education;

@sanfranciscokid-

I suggest doing as much research possible to find the reasons why you were rejected. Use and explain your situation along with a very strong written appeal. I’m pretty sure the person over phone doesn’t review essays, so you have to appeal just like every other rejected applicant.

I know this isn’t what you want to hear, but I would have suggested you to apply to other colleges as a backup.

UCSB has gone crazy this year, Ravous good thing you have backups thats totally unexpected. good thing i didn’t apply my confidence would go down the drain.

Accepted

UC GPA: 3.94

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Sports and club activities while in high school. None in college.
Job/Work Experience: None
Volunteer/Community service: Play instruments at my church
Personal Statement: No spectacular but above average.

Applied for Financial Aid?: No
State (if domestic applicant): CA
Country (if international applicant): -
School Type: CCC
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Male

Attending Transfer Admit Day? (if admitted): I’m thinking about visiting UCSB next week.

Strengths: GPA (got a B on my first semester in Philosophy. Since then, all A’s.)
Weaknesses: EC- I have no work experience; I played sports (went to league final and got a bronze medal) and was a VP of a club, but didn’t do any of that in college.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Again. GPA. I was extremely nervous, because I had nothing to offer other than my grades. Two years ago, I was just an underachieve high school student who couldn’t even dare to apply to four-year universities. It’s good to know that I grew as a student substantially. Best to luck to all of you guys, and those who are accepted, CONGRATULATION! (If you guys have any question, feel free to PM me.)

@SanFranciscoKid It sucks, man, but that’s the bureaucracy.

Exceptions shouldn’t be expected, unfortunately.
