I am currently a junior in high school and am taking a few classes at a local university through its PSEO program. Will I still be eligible for the USABO?

^^Both.

They’re also better-looking and more likable. :]

^People in high school take supplemental college courses all the time. I don’t think taking university classes precludes you from USABO, as long as you still are a high school student.

Thanks for your response. However, I really need to know whether or not I will be allowed to participate. Have you taken the USABO while in PSEO? Can anyone give me any information/experience regarding eligibility for USABO of PSEO students?

^I emailed Kathy Frame for you [she’s the USABO director]. Are you taking “concurrent enrollment classes”? I’m not sure what those are, but presumably your eligibility will predicate on your answer to that question.

Hey, thanks for emailing Kathy Frame (you beat me by a few hours). She actually asked me if knew you, as you asked about a “friend”, and I was confused until I saw this post. Yes, I am taking concurrent enrollment classes. I’m also pretty sure that means I’ll be able to participate. I’ll post back here on whether or not I will. By the way, great job on the last USABO!

I have a question though. If you get a 5 on the ap exam. Is it likely that you will pass the usabo open? (just asking)

I have seen no correlation between AP success and USABO success (if anything, people who haven’t taken AP bio are the ones who have the audacity and skill to succeed [and believe they can succeed] without having taken any class on the subject).

could somebody answer this question I posted above:

is the difference between a finalist and a semifinalist the amount of bio knowledge learned and remembered or is it the ability of one to generate a conclusion from what they have learned? if it’s both, which one is more dominant. Also are there any other bio contests besides USABO?

To clear round one, will studying campbell and Reece suffice?

@123question:

You should be fine. I took bio courses from my local uni and still participataed.

@microphakia976:

If you get through the open, you should be able to get a decent score on the AP exam.

However, it doesn’t work the other way around, unfortunately.

@Sreesri:

Probably, yeah. Starting with Campbell is usually a good idea.

@kwkingdom123:

The only answer I can give you for this question is “I can’t give you the answer to this question.” Sorry.

Yep, I have been allowed to participate.

@NightShadeQueen Is it because it’s against the rules or something or because you don’t know?

my school doesn’t have this… how can i take it?

@kwkingdom: I think what she means is that you’re kind of asking a nature-nurture sort of question. The answer is, obviously, both, but which one is more important will never be something that people will reach a unanimous agreement on.

@dasdui: Talk to your administrator/biology teacher about starting USABO at your school.

Darn. I join the game this late.
LOL. I better get started!

I heard that ap chem is needed to become a finalist. can anyone confirm that?

@kwkingdom123:

In a way, both.

oldguy’s right. This is a question that does not have an answer. You absolutely need both.

Additionally, it may have been mentioned earlier, but I do write questions for the exam. Thus, I can’t answer a direct question regarding the questions.

Oh, and re: AP Chem. Useful, but not absolutely necessary.

@dasdui - Sweet-talk an administrator into being helpful. The exam itself is really not that expensive…what is it again, $75 for an entire school? If you can get enough interest, it’s more than possible to split the cost between a couple of families and not be paying much apiece.

@NO295208 - There’s still a lot of time before Open.

Are you considered a semifinalist if you clear the round 1 exam or should you clear round 2 to be a semifinalist of which the top 20 will be the finalists?

I made Finals last year, but I couldn’t go since I made RSI trololololol

worstluck

I have a question how different is the open exam to the gre biology exam (considering gre biology is a graduate exam). How similar are the two and if so can I study for the open exam using gre biology exams. (just asking)
