2013-2014 Tips, Tricks, and information for Packing and Move-In

2013-2014 Tips, Tricks, and information on Move-In

Before you leave, be sure your student has a completed immunization form and TB test if you haven’t already turned this form in at BB. It is NOT a good idea to wait until your student arrives on campus to complete this at the SHC.

It’s best to familiarize yourself with items that are allowed or prohibited in the dorms before you pack.

Don’t forget to take pictures and document any and all damages to the room. Your student will have a checklist provided for documentation as well.

One tip that served us well is to have one box (or tote bag) that was easy to grab that contained: TP, paper towels or (wipes in a cannister), scissors, tape, and a few other things that we felt that we needed to have access to right away.

^^^Absolutely. It doesn’t hurt to have a snack, water, and a few essential cleaners handy when you first arrive. The only thing worse than not having the basics handy when you arrive is to also be hot, thirsty, and hungry. :)

Familiarize yourself with your rights AND responsibilities as a resident and room mate or suite mate.

[Student Affairs | Housing & Residential Communities](http://housing.ua.edu/on_campus/rights_and_responsibilities.cfm)

Surprisingly, not everyone understands that dorms are shared spaces. All residents have equal rights AND responsibilities. :)

I can suggest that you label everything with your students initials, with a sharpie. After eight or nine months, the kids can have a surprisingly hard time remembering whose stuff was whose (e.g., the communal kitchen items).

Don’t share the cost of big items. Have the kids pay separately for TV, dorm fridge, dishes, cookware, decor, etc. At the end of the year, the item goes with whoever paid for it.

I just checked the move-in schedule and have a question - can upper classmen move in on any day. Last year I thought freshman moved in first (on a Friday) and everyone else moved in on Saturday and Sunday. This year it looks like move-in is Friday afternoon, and on Saturday and Sunday for everyone. Is this right?

I just noticed on the Honors College site that it lists Saturday, August 10, 2013, and Sunday, August 13, 2013, as move in for AA and OA. I wonder why they are not listed on this

[Honors Action | Honors College](Honors Action – honors.ua.edu | The University of Alabama)

Dates and Application

The 2013 Action Programs begin Sunday, August 11, 2013 and conclude Friday, August 16, 2013. Participants will move into their residence halls on August 10th or 11th, as designated by the UA Office of Housing and Residential Communities.

My biggest tip was we arrived a few days early to shop ( from MD and flew done) and had NO problem getting key the first day we were there. By move in day we were moved in, unpacked and all settled. This was RCS-N and they had big metal carts we pushed to the car to unload . We parked in the garage but in hindsight it would have been no issue to pull up front, we were just to shy. I think if we had waited til move in time we both would have been so stressed and pressured we probably would have fought.
