Also got into Cornell! Now it’s between Rice & Cornell (I’ve decided not to go to UT)

Hi everyone! I’ve received all of my acceptances. Although I got into all of the schools that I applied to, I am now more lost than ever because I can only choose one! I am in the BArch programs of University of Southern California, Cal Poly SLO, Syracuse, Penn State, and Drexel. At this point, I’ve narrowed it down to Syracuse, USC, and Cal Poly. Syracuse and Cal Poly are both highly ranked-Syracuse (3) and Cal Poly (5). Although USC as a university is very prestigious, their architecture program is 16th. I want to work in California in the future, probably in San Francisco, since I want to focus on green architecture and sustainable design. Cal Poly offers a minor in Sustainable Environments within their Architecture and Environmental Design College, while the other schools just offer courses in it. I’ve also been looking into Disney Imagineering, so if I choose USC, I’d be right there; however, I found some relations between USC and Cal Poly SLO.
Any help will be much appreciated. Are the rankings as important as I think they are? Can anyone please give me more information on each of these programs? (Syracuse, Cal Poly, and USC). Which one would you recommend? Thank you very much!!
Signed,
Confused Archie-to-be

hope you choose cornell!

Will someone please answer my question??? :/

Hey Casthighlight!
Im afraid I dont have a whole lot of information for you but I flat out freaked out when I read your comment. I thought it was something I posted and forgot. I am literally in the EXACT position as you (for future aspirations). I will be attending Cal Poly SLO in the fall for architecture and I too have been thinking about minoring in sustainable design and have wanted to be a Disney Imagineer for quite some time!
All that I do know is that SLO has some great networking throughout the West Coast and that Disney does recruit. I dont know any figures but I do know that there are connections that can be made. I know all three schools have prestigious programs! Best of luck wherever you go!
I would love to chat sometime regarding interests in Imagineering and all! Have a good one!

casthighlight and Siegel3,

As a native Angelino, I have aspired to be an Imagineer sine I was very young, and still work towards being one! I’m currently a first year at Syracuse’s architecture program, and let me tell you, casthighlight, while the university has a ridiculously strong alumni network alone, the architecture department has one of, if not, the only career services initiative in the country out of any architecture school. Connie Caldwell, the career services director, has been acknowledged on the designIntelligence survey as a most valuable educator (just imagine, no faculty members were mentioned, but she was!). I can confidently say that she’s responsible for getting students employed out of school, and she does it pretty well. She sends out torrential emails regarding internship opportunities, FAQs on what goes on your resume, etc. She guides you throughout the whole process, and she’s just all around amazing. In fact, I recently asked her if any alumni are currently in Imagineering, and she said there are a handful that are!

I can’t speak much for the other schools, but from what I know, SLO’s program is very technical, and is not as intensive on design as, say, SCI-Arc. USC and Syracuse’s programs are both fairly well-rounded in terms of the curriculum, provided there is a balance in design, theory, structures, technology, and practice. After a semester and three-quarters of architecture school, I personally believe and understand now that the ability design is paramount to understanding architecture holistically. I have a few friends that are in the USC program, after seeing their work being put up on facebook… I honestly don’t understand how they are teaching their students. I know a faculty member who taught freshman studio last semester is also a native Angelino and is a USC Architecture alum, but discouraged one of my close friends from transferring (he was thinking of being closer to home and wanted to be challenged). He bagged on the school and said it was disorganized and needed a lot of work. Again, I don’t know very much about the school, but this is just information I find out and what I hear. It is your choice to consider it.

Anyway, I hope this helps, shoot me a message if you have any other questions!

A favorite pastime of architecture students nationwide… You’ll be amazed at the difference between schools…

Hi!
I am an international student interested in design. I have got offers from the following Pratt, UCLA, USC, CCA, SAIC, Parsons (Awaiting two more results)
Though I am leaning towards Architecture, I want the foundation year to give me the possibilities of exploring other design avenues.
What I need to know is
- Which amongst these would be the best choice considering that I would like to explore other design fields.
- Which of these would be the best architectural programme.
Looking forward to your responses.
Thanks

Thanks for the help everyone! I’ll take all of your input under consideration as I visit these schools over the next few weeks and as I finally make a decision!

XCcoasterfreak,
