2013 Bioscience Admission and Interviews

@edukimi The acceptance rates after interview for those specific schools may be wrong but the gist is correct. Some programs will accept almost everyone they interview and some will accept 50% or less.

I got an interview offer from the UPenn biochemistry and molecular biophysics program today. Interview dates are Jan. 17-19 and Feb. 7-9. Very excited!

congrats, pyridoxalphos! I am hoping to hear back from UPenn CAMB soon. I am an international applicant, though. So it might still a little while…

biomed89: What branch did you apply to under tha CAMB program? I applied to Microbiology.

@MicroB2012: I applied to the Developmental, Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology branch!

Well, my stats aren’t impressive at all but hopefully I’ll get into somewhere :/

[Undergrad. University] top liberal arts college
[Undergrad. Major(s)] Biology
[Undergrad GPA] 3.3 (still a senior)
[Years of Research Experience] started a summer research after freshman year and joined a graduate level lab sophomore year, so 2.5 years in a grad level lab and a summer in the industry
no papers yet, 1 in prep as first author, another one in prep as co-author, 2 posters
[GRE Scores] 156Q, 155V, 4.0 AW
[Prospective Graduate Program] Molecular Biology/Cancer Biology
[Prospective Graduate Schools]
Sloan-Kettering
Rockefeller
Weill-Cornell
Columbia
NYU Sackler
Washington Univ in St. Louis
UT Southwestern

I know my GRE scores/GPA aren’t strong enough but hopefully, my research experience and strong LORs will help. I joined a graduate level lab (no undergrad for this institution) pretty early in my undergraduate career (and have been putting in >40 hrs/week) should indicate how passionate I am. My PI is also well-known in his field so I hope that will also help.

I’m in the same boat as you sweetmuffin. All we need is one acceptance

[Undergrad. University] top 10 liberal arts college
[Undergrad. Major(s)] Biology
[Undergrad GPA] 3.4
[Years of Research Experience] 1.5 years as an undergrad in ecological/ developmental bio research (not much help for immunology)
Been working in an immunology lab for the past 2 years with a respected PI at a top 5 research university, although since our research is clinical in nature, it takes a long time to publish, so no pubs, however, I have been working on an independent project
[GRE Scores] 161Q, 161V, 5.5 AW
[Prospective Graduate Program] Immunology
[Prospective Graduate Schools]
Sloan-Kettering
Rockefeller
Weill-Cornell
Columbia
Penn
Emory
UCSF
Stanford
UWash Seattle

I did take immunobiology this past spring and made an A+, and got the professor, who co wrote one of the chapters in Janeway’s Immunobiology, and is on the admissions committee at the school I work at to write me a recommendation, so I should have 2 pretty excellent recs from immunologists. We’ll see how it all shakes out I guess.

I’ll make it 3 for those of us with iffy stats, just hoping for one!

[Undergrad. University] large public research school
[Undergrad. Major(s)] Cell Bio/Neuro
[Undergrad GPA] 3.1
[Years of Research Experience] 2+ years at a private university in oncology, have 1 each of 3rd author paper, poster and abstract, and 1 each of 2nd author poster and abstract. Another paper being resubmitted and 2 others in-progress.
Another 1.5 years at a state public research lab, stem cell studies, no pubs
[GRE Scores] 156Q, 160V, 4.5 AW
[Prospective Graduate Program] Immunology/Cancer Biology
[Prospective Graduate Schools]
Sloan-Kettering
NYU Sackler
UWash
UCSF
UCSD
UChicago
UIC GEMS
Northwestern DGP
Penn BGS
Temple
Tufts
BU

I had a terrible GPA (like 1.7) my junior year when I transferred to the large public school and was still an astrophysics major. I changed my major and there is an upward trend in my GPA. Unfortunately, there is a full point of difference between my 2 schools’ GPAs because of this. I explained in my personal statement as best I could, hopefully my success late in school and in the working world will make up for it, along with my interesting research and solid LORs.

I’ll keep my fingers crossed for everyone here :). Obviously, we all deserve to get into somewhere. Sending out all my positive vibes to everyone!:)

@sweetmuffin
Good luck to you, too!
Above three posters have better background than I do.
I am adding some less competitive programs along with popular ones that appears here a LOT :)

I will stop lurking: UPenn Neuro Interview dates are Jan 18 and Feb 8.

@ edukimi: Thank you for the correction! lol I really should have checked out previous year stats before I specified a couple of schools. And to be fair, my professor did say “select programs” without naming. my bad >_<

ahhh can’t believe Northwestern’s IBIS program is already sending out invites! Their DGP deadline isn’t even until the 15th >_<

gl to everyone!

I can verify both that xiv21 is a BBS student (as am I), and that information is correct. BBS rejects very few students post-interview.

However, Harvard MCB and Harvard Neuro have more stringent cuts after the interview. MCB probably admits in the neighborhood of 75-80% of interviewed students. Neuro is a little steeper – they typically interview about 30 students and admit about 20.

I haven’t heard that Harvard Neuro’s admissions committee has met yet. (My PI is on the committee most years.) Last year, I thought I remembered them meeting on the 18th, because I was supposed to have a committee meeting that day, and had to reschedule. :)

Piano5115 - Sounds like I made an error in assuming that acceptance percentages would be similar across the programs. So sorry.

Anyhow, what I think I am learning is that I can’t assume anything in this process. :)

Mollie - thanks for the detailed explanation/example

My notes on last year show that Abqnola and Musttryharder got Harvard Neuro offers on the 16th, and that someone made the comment that Harvard neuro interviews were already done on the 19th.

molliebatmit: Do you know when the Harvard BBS interview offers are going to be sent out? Thanks

Got an offer to interview at UNC BBSP!

@MicroB2012 Jane 8th for Harvard BBS according to last year posts

@elocin

Ah nice. I’ll have to ask if I ever get to that point. I’m applying for Microbiology programs mostly, although I haven’t decided for Iowa. I might apply to both since the preliminary is free. My GRE test doesn’t show up on Iowa’s application and I sent via my 4 free ones, so I might have to call them. My application for UIC is weird, cause it doesn’t ask for my transcript, but that might be because I go to Champaign-Urbana and we are technically one giant school, so maybe they already have it.

Harvard mcb adcom doesn’t meet until after jan 1st ( same as bbs I believe).
