2013 Bioscience Admission and Interviews

Hey everyone, panda here. Running out of bamboo so I’m starting to eat a random assortment of other plants.

Duke structural biology and biophysics invite by phone. Interview weekend feb 22-23 but they say they are flexible.

Soooooooo quiet,

MicroB2012 have you heard back from Sloan-Kettering (Ms. Torres) about the interview schedule?

CSCmeta: Not yet, But I got reply from the associate dean saying that they are going to send out details soon. Maybe we will hear back from them after new year.

I got an interview at the Columbia Medical Center but am interested in basic science. Does anyone know if the biology program at Columbia’s Arts & Sciences would be more appropriate for me, and is one a stronger program than the other? I’m asking because I am trying to decide whether to apply to the Arts & Sciences one that has a 1/4 deadline. Thanks!

PolarB13: It is all basic science research, and you can only apply to either one program.

On this day last year the thread was already on page 49. Makes me wonder if the thread is quiet because less people are applying.

I bet the thread explodes next week when the schools reopen. It’s certainly driving me crazy.

I am stress-eating, stress-lifting and stress-eating some more. It’s all very stressful, you guys!

Hi Everyone. :)

Applying to a few late deadline schools… I need all of the safety net I can get.

Hi, nice to meet you all.

I have only officially heard back from Princeton Neuroscience. I received an invitation on 12/21 for an interview on Feb 1-2nd. Has anyone else gotten an interview on this date at Princeton?

Is the general consensus that UCSF and UC Berkeley are going to begin sending out their interviews in January? I’ve also heard that Columbia, Harvard and MIT have already sent out their interviews. Does this mean we shouldn’t expect to hear back from these schools? Does reaching out to people at these schools help?

Congrats to all who have gotten interviews, fingers crossed for everyone else!

@seldamat Which program are you talking about for UC Berkeley? I know MCB sent out invites last week but I don’t know if they are finished.

Ah! I forgot to mention that I am applying to Neuroscience Ph.D. programs. I hope that UC Berkeley sends out invites in waves, because I’ve heard of some already getting invites.

@seldamat - As I understand it, Harvard neuro has gone out (Dec 20). As for Columbia, it sounded like they had all gone out but another was posted as received this morning on gradcafe. Not sure what that means. As for MIT, why do you think they have all gone out? I am not aware that any official MIT invites have gone out to date.

@edukimi - there is a person on the grad cafe forum who has received an interview from MIT… I’m assuming that he is part of a group that has been pre-selected for interviews. But I’ve also heard that there is a good chance that they are probably sending interviews in waves.

Here is the link if you want to read up on it:

Does anyone know if there is more than one interview for princeton?

@seldamat - Thanks far sharing but I am very familiar with that thread. And on the last page, post #167 AK1921 wrote

I interpret that as MIT not having sent out invites as yet. Plus, BCS is prone to sending out their invites over many weeks. Check out its history in the results page.

PS if you have not seen this thread. Your may find some info interesting. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/graduate-school/1427858-2013-biosciences-interview-dates.html

@edukimi Ah! I didn’t see that post! I guess there is still a chance we might hear back then. BTW edukimi you might want to add Princeton Neuroscience jan 31 - feb 3 on your list.

I’m really interested to know if Princeton has more than one interview date. According to their self reported stats, anywhere between 14-18 students are admitted following the interview. I would assume that they would interview somewhere around 20-30 students, making the whole process a lot less stressful than I had initially anticipated.

Stats for Princeton Neuroscience:

^ seldamat - the way that thread works is you post your interview date information to the end of the thread and molliebatmit kindly does a master edit of the first post and adds your information to it

hope I made sense :)
