2013 Chances

I am just wondering, considering the selectivity of the admissions process this year, if I have a shot at Haverford (I know these chance things are lame but might as well get some imput or a reality check)
Major: Poli Sci / International relations
GPA weighted: 4.3 Unweighted 4.0
Class Rank: 11/270
SAT's: CR: 690 Math: 660 Writing: 710
AP classes taken/ going to take: English AP, US AP, European History AP, Comparative Government AP, Chem AP

EC are the strongest:
-President Key Club
-Secretary-General of Model United Nations
-8 Best delegate awards @ Model UN
-Model UN moderator and USA representative (largest club in the school)
-3 Leading roles in the musicals/ drama club
-Cross Country Captain (as a junior and senior)
-Spring Track Captain
-Treasurer of the class of 2009
-mentor to a 5th grader weekly

I still got time to bring my rank down to like 9 and get all my SATs in the 700s. So if I do, what are my RD chances? Obviously the EC's are what will make it if i can get accepted

I am applying from a public high school in MA if that helps anyone

Being a parent and having gone throught this process twice, I would suggest that you concentrate on finding the right schools for you rather than polishing your already great creditantials. Visit, talk to students, talk to Coaches, sit in on some classes, and do over-nights, and the last thing is to compare with different schools. That will help you find the right school or schools for you. Since you live on the East Coast and you are competing with that high concentration of fellow H.S. graduates I suggest you expand your reaches and look further from home....the farther you apply from home the more you have in favor of getting in.

After you have multiple schools that would be a good fit for you and you have done your homework make sure you have a "Plan B" in your back pocket and live with where the chips fall. Good luck.

One last thing, HC has one of the best XC/T&F D-3 Coaches in the country, with that being said, if you are planning on running in College and D-1 is not your desire as it cares extra weight, and you want the D-3 high academic and a running experience I suggest you go to Penn Relays, D-3 XC Nationals in the fall, D-3 Indoor Nationals in the winter and talk to Coaches who have runners there, it is a great way to do your homework and show your interest, again, I wish you Good Luck.

Hi,

I'm going to Haverford next year and I'm ridiculously excited. JEL90903 offers very sound advice, you have solid credentials, but it is really important to find schools that will be a good fit for you.

My SATs were a little lower then yours, (700-m 660-r 690-w, and 590-math sat ii and 610-satii frennch) my class rank is slightly higher (2/230.) I considered Haverford a reach.

I know that I got into Haverford because i was VERY clear during my interview and in my essays that Haverford was the perfect school for me. I spent a looong time writing my honor code essay. I visited twice.

If, after you have done all your research, and you know that Haverford is a school you would be happy at, then I'd say you have a fair shot at admission. If you're applying because you want to add another school to your list, you probably won't get in. I suggest looking at the stats for admitted students that should be a couple threads down, just to show how erratic Haverford admissions can be.

Good Luck, and try to enjoy the admissions process! I know that it's incredibly stressful, but it is also a time to get introspective and decide what you really want out of life. There are so so so many schools out there, and essentially you get to pick!

woohoo!!!!!! did you apply early decision or regular?
Haverford seems to be a perfect fit for me and one not regularly applied to from my school. I worry that the ranks, considering I'm 11th may be my downfall despite my complete enthusiasm and passion. I've narrowed down my list to schools I believe would be my perfect fit, and I am sure this is one of them

Being 11th will NOT be your downfall AT ALL. You have an excellent class rank. I applied regular decision, although all along part of me knew that HAverford was my first choice. I didnt apply early because I was afraid of rejection.

If you really do have enthusiasm and passion for haverford then you have a viable shot, most certainly. That being said, Haverford is very difficult to get into, and it is, in no way a sure shot.

During my interview (with matt essman, he is super awesome) i said that i didn't want to be judged by test scores. he told me, frankly, that test scores and gpa are a big deal, BUT that personality/enthusiasm/passion were also VERY important.

Again, good luck!

Do you think I still have a shot in regular decision? Because I'd love to go and show that but cannot do ED because of financial issues that go along with that.

timxc126....I understand your worried position between a thick envelope and a financial aid package, just be aware that HC just changed their formula for financial aid to in-coming students in your favor. Are you worried about being admitted or your financial aid package because they are 2 separate issues. I would go for your best shot at admission and worry about the F.A. later, trust in the process and it will work out.

you have a shot. thats really all we can tell you. DON'T apply early if you are worried about FA though.

Idk if thats my best chance of getting in.......any way of improving my chances dramatically?

Hi again!

I wouldn't apply early if I were you. as for improving your chances, write a kick ass essay and bring up your SATs. Youre in the ball park though, so you shouldn't really worry about it that much.

You definitely have a great shot. I had the same stats as you did, and I got in especially with SAT scores almost the same as yours.
just concentrate on the essay and the interview. and also, I sent in an activities list and a recording of my violin piece.

but then, geography helped me a little; I a from Texas, where no one heard about Haverford. and I rejected Hav though because the large tuition of 51 K per year. so do consider the costs.

Does anyone know how political science/ history department would be at Haverford,
and if I'm going to go to law school its a good option
