I work for USC Housing. I transferred in as a sophomore and I got housing. You have to be really on it though on dates and sign up for housing literally the second you can. You can also get on the wait list. Very few things are cheaper than $3000 a semseter - that’s almost unheard of in this neighborhood. You are looking more at $3500-4000 depending on 2 or 4 roommates. Most places are done by person as opposed to by whole apt as to stop people from not being able to pay rent if someone dropped out. So lorenzo is 1376 or whatever for JUST you. YOur other roommate also pays that amount. If you do the 4 person option then its like $800 a month PER PERSON. This is a big city, do not expect housing to be cheap, and you are also living in a university area which is EVEN more expensive.

Hi USCAlum05, thanks for your post. I’m not from SoCal or California for that matter, and unfortunately do not know anyone close from CA :\ I’ve been paying attention to offers posted on facebook (which so far have been too expensive) and just applied to USC housing. I actually won’t have any idea where my classes will be until early-mid July after Orientation when I pick out my classes. I think i’m ok with anything within walking distance to campus. I’ll check out Nupac and Conquest, thanks a lot for the suggestions!!

Like I said above, I just applied to housing. If I happen to be in your matching roommates list, please feel free to request me! My name should be “Teresa Pham” on USC housing.

Hi kaikomai, yeah i’ve come to realize i’ve just got to accept housing will not be cheap Ah, I really hope I’m not too late to get housing if I applied today. It’s been a week since my acceptance. Thanks for your all your information!

I hear you. The big thing is, as kaikomai said, there isn’t necessarily going to be anything “cheap” (depending on where you’re coming from) per se, but there are some better deals than others. One other big thing, as others have said, is to find out if you have to pay rent per person or for the apartment, because if you have a roommate situation fizzle out (it happens) then you have to find out whether or not you’d be responsible for that other person’s rent should he/she move out on you. I’ve seen that happen to friends of mine outside of school (i.e. your rent doubles overnight, at least until you can find another roommate) and it’s not pretty.

Beyond that, you don’t necessarily need to know where your individual classes are going to be before you start coning down on where to live. If you have your major declared (and as a transfer I assume that’s the case) then you’ll be able to figure out where the majority of your classes are going to be. For example, if you’re a business major then most of your classes will be in and around Hoffman Hall. If you’re a comm major, most of your classes will be in and around the Annenberg building. Film school classes are generally held in the new cinema complex and to a lesser degree in the Zemeckis building at 32nd and Figueroa. That sort of thing. If you know your major, feel free to call the department and ask about this. Doing a little homework now will save you from having to walk all the way across campus for an 8am lecture.

You can do this! Believe it or not, it’s good practice for later in life. I know it’s stressful, but you WILL get this figured out.

Also, be sure to call the housing office and you can also contact either the local alumni association or your regional admissions counselor and he/she/they can put you in touch with people from your area also coming out this way.

Good luck!

Wow, thank you so much for your words of encouragement! I appreciate it a lot. This is definitely a learning experience for me haha, but becoming more independent and mature was one of the reasons for transferring to USC anyways so Thanks so much for all the tips, I’ll take all of them into consideration. My major is International Relations, and if i’m not mistaken that should mean a lot of my classes will be in the Von KleinSmid Center?

Do you think it’s risky to wait to hear back on a room assignment from USC housing? The email I got after applying stated transfers start getting assignments mid-June. If I get into my first choice (not sure how likely that is), Troy East for a two bedroom triple, it will only cost $2885 a semester. Compared to what I’ve been able to find so far for other off-campus apartments, that seems to be cheaper. I’m just afraid of committing to an apartment that might potentially cost more before I get my room assignment back. Would you say offers for off-campus housing would still be available for affordable prices after mid-June if my assignment happens to be unsatisfactory? Again, thank you!

It is a risk to wait for USC Housing, but even if you get a “bad” assignment, you can apply for “reassignment” and get a much better place often times. No one in the past 10 years has not been able to get USC housing - this includes on and off-campus, although most housing for transfers is off-campus. Sometimes you get put on a waitlist, but they always take everyone on the waitlist once they figure out the logistics of everything. I personally think USC Housing is better because its just less of a hassle - USC isn’t doing it for profit and therefore they have more money to spend on upgrades/maintenance and what not - but USC housing isn’t always cheaper (in your case - you found one of the few places where it is)

There are benefits to going with off-campus non-USC housing though, and that would be that you don’t have the whole random lottery draw and what not, and you get to know right away for what you are paying for.

Of course, I do admit since I work for housing I am a bit biased, but I think considering the amount of students and the limited room space we have, we do a good job of getting everyone at least something.

@kaikomai again, thank you so much for all your info. it’s really helpful and I appreciate it. I’m really hoping to get the USC housing I want and if not to get reassigned to it haha. I do agree it’s just less of a hassle. pmed you!

I applied for USC housing as a junior as a transfer student. What are my chances of getting a dorm. Also are there any dorms filled up already? is there any specific ones left that I can apply at?

^^ the dorms (the traditional type-- not the appartments) at USC are overwhelmingly filled with freshman-- and there are very few spots (if any) leftover for sophomores, let alone older upperclassmen. There just isn’t the supply available and those spots are reserved for freshman.

My D originally went through the housing lottery for upperclassmen this winter for next year, but got assigned a very late (but not last) lottery time and the only USC housing left at that point was farther off campus than she wanted. None of the housing choices she wanted were available (and it’s not like she had high hopes for choice housing to begin with).

Transfers will be coming in after all the current upperclassmen who went through the lottery were assigned, so my guess is that you would need to be more than lucky to get a choice assignment. However, you never know and there may be a spot that opens up where you wanted.

Any guys looking for a roommate? Transferring to Marshall, am serious about my studies but like to have a good time, sports fanatic, message me if you’re interested

I just got admitted as a transferring sophomore too and after reading through these posts im still a little confused for housing does anyone know if it would be a good idea to apply for housing through usc? on the housing website it makes it seem as though it would be hard to actually get housing but the other post said everyone who applied did end up getting something. i feel like housing through usc would be better to meet new people too vs looking for housing on your own

I was just admitted to USC as well, but I haven’t put my deposit down yet. Can you apply for housing before you put down the enrollment deposit? Probably sounds like a dumb question, but I’m waiting for my dad to send me the money for the deposit.

Also- is it first come, first serve?

Is USC housing all gone? I like the look of a couple of places, like parkside and severance but what’s the chance of getting a single room in those?

If anyone is interested I am looking for someone to take over my lease at Lorenzo. It’s a brand new building, granite counters stainless appliances all utilities included. It’s for a shared room on the top floor…$940 per month, rates are going up and I signed lower. If you take over my lease I will cover your deposit and give you $500 cash. I’d love to stay, but plans have changed. You can still choose roommates. Let me know if you’re interested.

To anyone worrying about applying to the USC housing, I think you definitely should do it! From what it sounds like they have a lot of rooms left. I had to cancel my contract but was late in doing so, so I’m currently on a fairly long list of people trying to get out of their contracts by USC finding someone to replace them, which only happens when they’ve run out of empty spots. It’s definitely safe to apply! :)

Just got in as a sophmore! does anyone know how long the financial letter takes? or when the last day to submit your SIR is?

Congratulations! The financial aid package, assuming you have submitted all applications, forms and requested information, will be presented within 2 weeks (though other admitted transfers have reported getting it within a couple of days).

In general, your USC commitment deposit is due within 2 weeks of receiving your letter for Fall 2013 admission or the date specified in your letter for Spring 2014. You have not yet received your letter, so the clock is not yet ticking for your commitment deposit. I see you noted your catalog year in your other post, but what does it say for “TERM OF ENTRANCE?” Does it say 20133 or 20141? The catalog year would be 2013 for both terms of entrance (Fall 2013 and Spring 2014) and so catalog year cannot be used to determine if you have been admitted for Fall 13 or Spring 14.

You do not have to make your commitment deposit until you have had a chance to review your financial aid. If you need more time contact admissions and ask for an extension on your commitment deposit until you know about financial aid - it will be granted.

*A tiny, note which displays alamemom’s penchant for details (apologies, but that is what makes me such a font of information…): “SIR” is a term used by the UC system for a specific form you fill out called, “Statement of Intent to Register.” For USC, you submit your “Commitment Deposit” :)

So does anyone know anything about stardust apartments that are off campus? I went by there a few weeks ago and they are renovating it, anyone else placed there?
