2013 NMSF Question

If i got a good PSAT, (NMSF level), but my SAT score is 40 points lower than the equivalent PSAT score, can I still get NMSF?

My PSAT is comfortably above NMSF cutoff for my state.

Your SAT score doesn’t count towards getting NMSF, you’ll get it as long as your PSAT is over the cutoff. SAT scores only matter for NMF. If your SAT is anything above 2000, you’re safe for NMF.

To make NMF, your SAT doesn’t have to match your PSAT…it just has to be above the minimum number…which is about 1970 or so…so a 2000+ is very safe.

Alright, thanks! phew :)

Does SAT score come into play for NMS or mainly GPA

^^^^^

Please clarify…

Are you asking what is important for becoming a NMFinalist?

I believe he meant National Merit Scholarship, meaning Finalist PLUS the actual money from NMCorp. Maybe not, though.

The $2500 NMCorporation money goes to the top scholars in each state–scores, grades, the whole application. Corporate NM money goes to the kids whose parents work for a sponsoring company or who are linked to the company in whatever way the company uses. University and college NMS awards go to those students who apply and are accepted. Some of the college/university scholarships are competitive and some just require NMF status.

there are 3 types of scholarships that make a NMF into a NMScholar.

1) Receiving a one-time 2500 award from NMCorp.

2) Receiving a NM corporate scholarship from a participating corporation.

3) Receiving a NM scholarship from a participating college.

A student can only receive one official NM scholarship. Receiving one of the above makes a NMF a “NM Scholar”.

Last month our daughter received a letter from the National Merit® Scholarship Program to tell her that she is one of the 50,000 with the highest PSAT/NMSQT® Selection Index scores. Does she have to do anything to be considered as a semifinalist (application form, essay)? The National Merit website just says that the students will be notified through their schools that they have qualified as either a Commended Student or Semifinalist. Thanks.

To become NMSF, you just need to pass the cut-off score of your state. Each state has different cut-off. For example, CA had 221 last year. So, if your PSAT score was above 221 you would be automatically NMSF if you lived in CA. The cut-off score also varies year by year. About 16,000 of the 50,000 are recognized as NMSF, then 15,000 of NMSF become NMF which are chosen based on their SAT, GPA, recommendation, etc. Approximately 8,500 of NMF will be given one of NM scholarships which are mentioned my mom2collegekids.

Anxious…

What was your D’s PSAT score and what state are you in?

Anxious, there is almost nothing to be done now but wait until August/September to see if her score meets or exceeds the cut-off score for your state. You can look in this forum for historic cutoff scores for your state or reply to mom2ck and she will give you some idea of your daughter’s chances.

If she has a good chance for NMSF, the only thing you might do in advance, if it has not already been done, is to take the SAT. Semifinalists must submit a “qualifying” SAT score in order to advance to finalist. There is still a chance to register for the June test if you think she might want to do this, otherwise you can wait until next fall.

It is unfortunate that high schools don’t explain this more thoroughly.

We are in Arizona and she got 219. She got 2350 for SAT. Descartesz, you are right about high schools not explaining this better. As a matter of fact, her high school doesn’t do much to encourage the students to take PSAT test. Hope she will make the cut-off. Thanks.

I’m pretty sure a 219 is high enough for NMSF in AZ. As long as your D does what’s required in the fall, sends her SAT to NMCorp (code 0085) and isn’t a discipline problem at school, she’ll very likely make NMF.

Congrats.

AZ cutoff was 213 in 2011 and 209 in 2010. 219 is sure to qualify.

Just to clarify Gooddaddy’s comment, since it can be confusing - if your score is AT the cutoff OR above, you are NMSF.

Yes…a score that is exactly the same as the cutoff makes NMSF. You do NOT have to be above the cutoff.

If the cutoff in your state is 220 and you have a 220, then you made NMSF.
