2013 Senate Page Program

Hi I was just wondering if I could get some information from some others that have served as a page for the Senate in the past. I am from the state of South Dakota so as for the summer program, I know that I will be pretty level with everyone else from my state applying for the opportunity. As for the school year term, being I go to school in South Dakota there are close to no government classes or clubs to join. I did participate in Parli Pro on my FFA and FBLA teams but that is about it. My only electives are FACS, Ag, Tech, or Band and I am not allowed to take government until I am a senior. Is there any national clubs you were a part of or if you had any other ideas as to what I could try to be a part of. I am really interested and would love to be a Page for one of my local senators but I have no idea how I am supposed to compete with students from larger schools that offer government, political, and other closely related classes and clubs. If you were accepted into the program, would you mind telling me some of the extra-curriculars you were in? I do not think that FBLA, FCCLA, FFA, Volleyball, and Marching Band are going to cut it as of right now.

And if you have time for a quick opinion on this idea, my mom runs the SD Hall of Fame, do you think if I followed her around or was an intern for her CEO, that I could include that on my resume? Or would that just be useless information to them considering it is my mom?

Thanks!

sdgirl92, I am also applying for the Senate Page program but for the fall or spring semester. As far as my application, I have Student Government, Model United Nations, National History Day, DECA (business competition), Baseball and other extra-curricular activities. I also have many community and service and volunteering positions. I think your application is strong especially considering you are from a small school. You are applying for the summer session, correct? The summer session has 64 pages rather than 30 during the school year. Thus, a better chance of selection.

As for interning with your mom, it seems to be a great idea. It adds working experience to your resume.

Good Luck!

jrch4, I’m applying for the senate page program as well. I live in MD and neither of my senators are eligible to appoint a page, so I keep hitting roadblocks with senators who don’t applications from out of state residents. I’m just not sure what else I can do. I called Senator Menendez’s office and a staffer told me to get in touch with the majority leader’s office, but he didn’t explain why. I really really want to do this program and have wanted to do it for two years, and I’m not going to be 16 forever, so I just want to know what other people are doing to make it happen.

You could also volunteer for a campaign for the rest of this summer and in the fall. Even if you live in area so rural that doorknocking doesn’t make sense, a lot of the state level and national campaigns are set up so you can help make phone calls. Or get involved in registering voters.

Well am applying for Spring in NY State
EC- Speech and Debate, Currents Events Club, Library Club, AIL club whichs helps children with mental challenges , Scrabble Club, Student Congress, many more but school year did not start :(.
Sports-Tennis
School Awards- Cum Laude, Gym Awards, and Teacher awards.
Classes- No AP because my school does not have any but I will be self studying for AP US History, AP Government and Politics in the US, and AP World History. Maybe Human Geo
Summer- Business Camp at Columbia and JSA RNC Symposium but can’t go :(.
For you I think your app is strong as well.

I am in college now, but I tried to apply to the House page program back when it still existed.

I tried applying to the program when I was 16, but didn’t get in. Instead, I got offered an internship at my local congressman’s office and had a wonderful time. I got experience in an office setting and got to write letters, answer phone, and even help with a little event planning. It was also more low key and there was down time between things. I would highly suggest that you all consider interning for a congressman or even some other politician if things don’t pan out. Mayors and representatives in the state legislature often take interns. Congressman often have 1-2 offices within their district, the closest one to home when I was in high school was about 20 minutes. It was a good conversation starter for college interviews as well, since this seems like something a college kid (rather than a a high school student) would do.

Interning made me realize I wanted a career in government and that there are many other facets to government beyond the House and Senate.

Hi guys!
I was a senate page a while ago and hopefully I can answer some of your questions. First off, if you don’t have any connections to senators you’ll have a harder time getting in. Senate Page School is allegedly harder to get into than Harvard…
But anyway, page slots are often unpredictable because they are distributed by the majority and minority leaders. They are usually given out by seniority so if your senators are relatively new to congress you’re kind of out of luck. Senators can appoint their pages from any state but they try to restrict it to the state they represent only. When I was selected I was up against like 10 people who all had more extracurriculars, private school, the whole shebang. But all it really comes down to is whether or not you’re likable. That’s usually how things work on the hill. If you guys have any other questions feel free to pm, I know there’s another page around here too so maybe he can help too.

Hi potential pages!
I was a page this past spring and I agree with much of what jse said. The process really is unpredictable and depends on the senator through whom you apply. And remember that only 30/100 senators get slots, so you may have to apply out of state.
As for activities, my big things were student gov., model un, and debate.
I also highly recommend you interview in person.

I am a Washington state homeschooler applying to the spring term. Is anyone here familiar with Senator Murray’s application process? My interview is in early December.

This has been pretty much one of my life goals ever since I paged at the state level a few years ago, an experience that pretty much changed my view of politics entirely, as well as being my launchpad for a variety of different political activities. I’ve been preparing for this interview for so long, and it’d be awesome if anyone knows anything about the nature of the questions.

Is it 64 senators per state or total?

Also, when are applications due by because I am also interested in the senate page program!

@Dondarush
I am also applying for the spring session and have my interview later on this week. Good luck!!! Pm me and i will inform you how my interview goes.

Is anybody doing the Spring 2013 session? I just got my nomination from Senator Reid! :D

Hello all. Perspective Summer Page here. Is it possible/recommended to apply to both of your senators? Also, for those from NJ who were accepted, does anyone which of our senators has appointed the most pages?

I was wondering the same. Which NJ Senator should I apply to?

I wasn’t accepted from NJ or MD my home state, but based on what I’ve heard from on here I would apply to both of them. I think Menendez selects pages and receives them consistently. But DEFINITELY apply to both of them to increase your chances. Also if either of you are able to be a page next spring (2013) Senator Coons is sponsoring a page and has not found one as of yet. The application is due on 12/21 and being a page during the school year is a lot more prestigious.

@■■■■■■■■ and prospective pages
I am from NJ and can offer some advice about sponsorship. Both Senators do not sponsor pages on a regular basis. I am looking for a Sponsor for this Spring and had to go “out of state”. The Senators office that I applied to and was told that I was a finalist for sponsorship is waiting for final conformation from the Majority leaders office. My advice would be to contact the majority leaders office or try for an out of state sponsorship. Best of luck though!

Hi,

Does anyone have any experience/advice on whether I should apply to multiple senators? I’m not sure if there are any rules about the number of applications I can send in, or how to deal with the results if I am lucky?

Yeah can someone give me some insight. How/ when do I apply for a summer session? Can I apply to another senator besides one of my own? Multiple?

Hi IvyBound2014 I am also going to be a US Senate Page this coming Spring I am from Texas and will be sponsored by Senator Cornyn, the Minority Whip in the Senate. It is so awesome to hear from someone who has also been chosen to recieve this extremely prestigious and rare opportunity this coming semester.
