2014 1st Semester Parent's Discussion

Sending good thoughts and best wished to all of our kids on their first day of class!! :-bd

I’m so glad I checked this thread. For some reason I had it in my head that they were starting classes on Monday! Oops! I got a text from go2girl last night that she was plain exhausted from all of the orientation events. A lot to take in. It will be so nice for them to be truly settled. And even though I hear great things about Vandy’s food, I worry about go2girl’s diet. She is prone to stomach aches and adjusting to a style different than Mama’s homecooking could be problematic. Like all of you, so grateful she’s in such a warm, supportive atmosphere.

Actually, it has been very mild down here, too (we live a little over an hour away from Vandy) until this week. I don’t care who you are or where you come from, it’s just plain hot and muggy now. Hopefully, it won’t last much longer. Thank goodness for air conditioning!

Had nice, extended conversation with our daughter tonight. She sounds great and, like many others said (but that I’m surprised about), more mature. Classes went well, she really likes her professors, making lots of friends, has found friendly tables to eat at during meals, has determined it’s best to grab breakfast in her room, and has already hit the karaoke place. That sure seems like a lot in just two days, but we love hearing about it all!

Had a nice phone conversation with DS tonight. Apparently, the freshman class went to visit the Country Music Hall of Fame Saturday night. DS said that he signed up for as many club as he can so he can go to at least one meeting and decide if he will join.

4beardolls—had same conversation on Saturday with my s. definitely getting all settled in, and enjoying everything Vandy offers…loves the flexibility of the meal plan, and shared that a professor showed a Key and Peele clip that was a big hit. (one of our fav shows to watch together) very grateful to hear how happy my s is…

I am so sorry for posting this here, but could any of you please reply with your daughter or son’s SAT/ACT score and whether they were an EDI applicant? I would be so appreciative. I apologize for intruding on this thread but I am trying to do everything I can to get into this amazing school. I have heard very frightening things about Vanderbilt’s emphasis on test scores, and I would just like to get a feel for what your children had, if that’s okay. Thank you so much.

I’m not a parent, but I suppose I’ll chime in with mine (just started this semester in my first year).
2200 super scored, 2190 highest single test (the first SAT I took)
And no, I was RD. I was waitlisted, but was pulled off in one of the first few waves.

@cawledgehopeful … that’s okay! My daughter was accepted ED1 - her ACT was either 33 or 34, I don’t remember.

SusieAnne, thank you so much for answering! i have a 2200, but i got an 800 writing (which apparently they dont look at) so that severely detracts from my composite. what were your CR and Math? thank you!

KaMaMom, thank you!

Do you current parents recall receiving something from VU Dining (maybe) about care packages we could order? Or am I thinking of some other school? Just curious, as I am collecting little items to forward on myself.

@cawledgehopeful, to answer your question…DS was accepted during regular decision with a 36 in ACT. He also thinks Vanderbilt is an amazing school.

What people post here is too small of a sample to be meaningful. Instead, look here for the 25th and 75th percentiles:

<a href=“College Navigator - Vanderbilt University”>College Navigator - Vanderbilt University;

Also, in engineering the 25th and 75th percentiles are 1470 and 1600, while overall they are 1410 and 1570 (yes, in engineering an 800 means you are just in the top 25+%). That means that – if you remove engineering – the numbers for the other schools would be somewhat lower than posted on the site above. Bad if you are applying for engineering, but good if you are applying for another school.

<a href=“Fact Sheet | About | School of Engineering | Vanderbilt University”>http://engineering.vanderbilt.edu/about/statistics.php</a></p>

A&S is 1400 to 1580 (Class of 2017)

@cawledgehopeful‌ Glad to help! I had a combined 1520 for CR and Math, with an 800 in CR and a 720 in Math. Wish I’d done a little better there, but Vandy obviously thought it was good enough!

@sorrento, I realize this isn’t exactly what you are asking, but my two freshmen last year loved care packages sent from Jake’s Bakes in Nashville. They deliver to campus and are famous for warm cookies and milk! Very easy to do in a pinch!

How to send flowers/goodies to the Freshmen dorm ?

http://campusdining.vanderbilt.edu/catering/campus-catering/</a></p>

They can create an order for you that your student can pick up at the Commons dining hall.

Thank you, @Jack1103 and @MaynardGKrebs. Jakes Bakes, in particular, looks delicious! I must be confusing Vandy with one of the other schools our daughter was considering which had set care packages you could preorder for different times of the school year. Better to be unique anyway!

Looking forward to the first game tomorrow. Looks like it will be televised on the SEC Channel – would be great it they got the Anchor Dash!
