2014-2015 applicants and their parents

Congrats VA Mom! That is very exciting news. Good luck to your D dheldreth! Does she have to travel far for the interviews?

No, they are all within driving distance and she has friends or family to stay with.

D. used students - hosts to stay for interviews. it was her way of getting more familiar with the student body at specific Med. School. She said that one time that she stayed with her friend, she actually missed this opportunity which was fullfilled during Second Look event later. Surprise - ended up attending there. However, this experiences also may negatively affect overall perception. D. had a very bad experience with her student host at one of the Med. Schools. Later D. withdrew after being put on hold and she commented that her not very positive impression was due to the negative experience with her host. It was a highly ranked Med. School, but D. did not care.

My D has chosen not to use student hosts because she wants to feel comfortable and rest before interviews-- some people have different levels of being at ease around total strangers. If she is fortunate enough to have choices in the spring, she will use second look to get a better feel for each school.

For both med school and residency interviews, S was often traveling to locations he had never been to. As I understood it, since both sets of interviews were not just mere formalities to see if say you’re crazy, but had real potential to be deal breakers even with a strong app, I felt it was critical for S to be as relaxed as possible. So I tended to arrange flights that would arrive in mid-late afternoon where he could get to hotel that had an onsite restaurant and have dinner. I also tried to find hotel that was as close as possible to interview site, ideally one where he could fall out of bed and walk across street. Expensive option, yes. In the end my travel plans probably meant more to my peace of mind than to actually reducing his stress at the interviews.

My D used student hosts for all her interviews last year. They took her out to the restaurants where students ate, she got to see a typical student apartment, meet more people, not to mention save money.

So far ALL D’s residency interviews are in driving distance and couple of them that she needed hotel, actually are offerring paying for stay. She turned down another hotel stay, because she will be staying at HOME, in her own room, in her own bed, yaya, looking forward to have her !!! But these are still for Prelim / Transitional year…
But I agree that for Med. School interviews, staying with the student host was the best opportunity to learn a bit more about student body at specific school and D. indicated that this very important aspect for her (others may not be so socially sensitive) played an important part in her decision making.

…OK, Oct. 15 is almost here,…good luck!

Good luck to all on Oct 15!

Both of DS’s interviews are within driving distance of our home. He plans to come home from school on the train the night before to get to his interviews. I think he should take advantage of student hosts, but like camomof3’s D will be more comfortable and relaxed staying here.

^ that’s wonderful that they are close to home. D has had a couple close to home too- and stayed with us. Still involved flying here, though. She is definitely getting used to the airport and will soon get to try out the train by herself.

She probably will hear from only 1 school on the 15th- the rest are schools that give decisions much later in the season (more painful waiting for us).

Best luck to all those who will hear Oct. 15th- and to those still waiting on decisions and interviews.

Best wishes to your DS, VAMom. My S was most nervous with his first interview but in the end he felt comfortable with his interviewers. He said even though interviewing is nerve wracking, most of his have been relaxed even when he knew he was being grilled. Fortunately he is good under pressure which has to help.

I can certainly understand why some students would rather not stay with a student host. I’m sure some students are better at hosting than others.

I agree, the most important thing is for your child to feel comfortable and be close enough not to worry about being late. My D would definitely be uncomfortable spending the night, showering, etc. with strangers. Fortunately the friends she is staying with for her first interview are med students, so she’ll get the best of both experiences :). She too won’t hear anything by the 15th. It will be the end if October at the earliest.

Hopefully the 15th brings good news- acceptances and more interview invites!

My son has stayed in hotels for his interviews even when student hosting was available. In most cases he has flown in late at night and has had to be out the door early in the morning for the interview. There really would not have been much time to socialize and get to know current students. I guess it might work if you were able to arrive early enough in the day to have dinner and spend the evening, but the timing hasn’t worked for him. He has scheduled his flights to miss as few classes as possible which has meant late arrivals.

I don’t think he’ll hear from any of his schools on 10/15. Some of the interviews are too recent and others don’t release decisions until spring.

Wishing those who are expecting decisions good luck!!

Good luck to all those waiting to hear good news today!

ohiomom,
If your S. applied to OSU, he may actually hear very soon.
When my D. was waiting, it was actually Oct. 16, means after midnight and OSU was the first - dean of admissions called personally (…literally very few days after an interview), nobody else ever called, just emailed.
Best wishes to everybody!

MiamiDAP, He applied to OSU but no interview invite. It’s one of those things I’ll never understand about this process. Interviews at plenty of other higher ranked schools but no love from OSU. Someone told me that they prefer instate students who stayed in state for undergrad which he did not. I have no idea if this is true or not. Maybe there was just something they didn’t like about him. Who knows?

Ohio,
it may be still coming from OSU. D. was interviewed literally around Oct. 13 or so, that is why we were surprised that OSU was her first acceptance with the personal call too. She went Miami, OH though for her UG. I heard that they are regional in regard to residency, not sure about Med. School. I say, their loss!
Best wishes!!

Thanks, Miami! I guess it’s still possible that he’ll hear from OSU. I met a mom at our local high school last night whose son is applying this cycle, went to the U of Michigan, and hasn’t heard from OSU either. My son has 2 Ohio interviews and others out of state so we’re thankful.

Two of D’s friends are applying this cycle. One of them just got accepted at OSU and another got accepted to Toledo. Both are Ohio residents.
