Yesterday I finished finals, had a first author paper accepted, and got an interview with Emory BCDB! What a day!

That’s a heck of a day bmbmike! Congrats!

Received an interview invite from Duke for the developmental and stem cell bio program!

It appears the gradcafe forums are getting a lot more activity than here…

Just submitted my applications, let’s see how I do! Good luck to everyone this year!

Hi, I had some interview questions I was hoping people could help answer. My daughter has applied to (too) many PhD programs in Biomedical Sciences. She got all of her apps in just before the 12/1 deadline that many schools had, even though some of deadlines are in mid December or early January. She has received interview requests from Johns Hopkins, University of Pennsylvania and Baylor in the last few days. Some dates are already conflicting and she has only heard back from about 1/4 of the schools she applied to.
Before accepting some of the interview offers we were curious if some of her other top tier schools had starting notifying applicants yet (U of Penn and Hopkins are in her top tier school list). Specifically, we wanted to know if anyone has received interview offers from Rockefeller University, Harvard and University of Virginia?
Also, does anybody know what percentage of the students invited in for interviews actually get accepted?
Finally, some of the programs she applied to are offered through medical schools. Do they operate in the same manner that some of the more traditional schools operate?
Thank you!

She should start scheduling soon, don’t wait till the last minute. Some schools have multiple weekends, if there is a conflict she may be able to contact the school to attend another one. Also keep in mind that the interviews are partly for her to learn about the program, whatever the top choice on paper is may not turn out to be top in reality. Worst comes to worst she might do a skype interview or just withdraw her application from a school she is not to keen on. I quickly withdrew one app after I had conflicting interviews last year, and I’m sure there was another applicant who was grateful for plenty of notice to schedule their own interview.

There are some good places to look online to see if people have been getting interviews, a similar thread to this one on gradcafe.com

as for acceptance %, maybe 50% to 99.999999% it really depends on the school. Same goes for how the programs operate, it depends. She will learn more precise details on the interviews and likely could do some reading online or contact the program directly for more info if it is a major issue.

@ScaggsvilleScott

I know for certain that Harvard DMS programs (BBS, Immuno, etc.) won’t offer interviews until the end of December at the earliest. Most admissions committees have not even met yet. If memory serves, Rockefeller also doesn’t to invites until end of December at the earliest.

I would concur that your daughter should start scheduling interviews now. Ask programs for alternate interview dates if there are conflicts, as most programs will interview during more than one weekend. For some programs, they do interviews and acceptances on a rolling basis, so earlier does improve chances. I may be mistaken, but I have the feeling that Johns Hopkins is a bit like that.

Post-interview acceptance rates range from around 50% to 95% depending on the institution. Rockefeller is the only place that I think still does straight acceptance without interview. Harvard used to straight accept, but now interviews with a ~85-90% accept rate.

So long as it’s a biosciences PhD program, medical schools and universities generally aren’t any different. There may be a slight lean towards biomedical research in med school PhD programs, and a lean towards basic research in “traditional” schools. But the process of getting a PhD is still more or less the same.

Good luck!

Got interview invitations from BU, WUSTL and UCLA
Has anyone heard from UCSF?
Good luck everyone!

I will defintely try those links you recommended.

She just got another interview invitation today (UNC) and has yet another conflict. I agree that they must have some option if a student has a conflict with another school. I am surprised that school are already trying to schedule interviews already. She just submitted her applications on 12/1 and received her fourth interview offer today.

She is waiting to hear back from some of her top schools, but I am not sure when they all start scheduling interviews. It sounds like she should not expect to hear from Harvard and Rockefeller for a few more weeks. Any ideas on when Sloan-Kettering, Einstein, Mount Sinai and Cold Springs Harbor starts (or started) scheduling?

Thank you again.

Thank you xiv21.

You are tremendously helpful and I greatly appreciate the information.

I am not quite sure what you are saying about Rockefeller. Are you indicating that they do offer interviews, but not until the end of the month, or do they accept people without doing an interview.

I didn’t know the post-interview acceptance rate was so high.

I am sure she will schedule her interviews at Hopkins and U of Penn this week since they are probably higher priority schools for her than UNC and Baylor. But, she will ask those two schools if they have any other interview date options. If they don’t then she will have to make some tough decisions at this early date in the grad school interview season. I am pretty sure that 3 or 4 of these schools don’t even have application due dates until early or mid January.

I think she would prefer to hear from Harvard, Rockefeller, Mt. Sinai, Sloan-Kettering, Einstein, and Cold Spring Harbor before locking in any interview dates, but I don’t think she should be waiting long before scheduling dates with Hopkins and U of Penn.

Thank you again. You advice and input is greatly appreciated.

Hi Again Zot,
I cannot seem to get the first link in your post to work. I received an error message. I joined the site to specifically access this link. An E-mail to the site admin has not been responded to. Is this the correct link? Can you tell me where it organizationally is on their website?
Thank you!

Hi ScaggsvilleScott,

I’ve just visited the GradCafe a few minutes ago, and the link worked fine. The forum 2014 Applicant Profiles and Admissions Results is under this organization:

The GradCafe Forums
→ The Menu
→ Life Sciences
→ Biology

Hope this helps! :)

Yep the link is also working fine for me. The gradecafe thread is very active right now, you will likely find something useful there.

If it really isn’t working, you can just google:
2014 Applicant Profiles and Admissions Results biology
and it should be the top hit. Good luck getting it all figured out with your daughter, this is a very exciting time to be in :)

ScagglsvilleScott- Just curious, the JHU interview…was that for Biomedical Engineering or for Biological Sciences? My son is wiating to hear on BME.

Hi Mumof2boyz,
I think she applied to two programs there and was asked to interview for both: Cellular and Molecular Medicine, and the Phrmacology and Molecular Sciences programs. She is interested in working in the field of drug design and development.

Hi Everyone,
My daughter received two more requests for interviews today: Case Western and University of Virginia and that is creating more conflicts foe her. I was hoping to circle back to a question I asked earlier. What does one due if they have interview date conflicts? Right now my daughter has 4 interview requests for one weekend and two interview requests for a second weekend. Do the schools typically offer a second interview weekend or some other options for students in such situations, or will she have to withdraw four of her applications due to these conflicts?

Yes, most programs have more than one interview weekend. If they are only offering one date, it is likely because they are trying to schedule people for one particular weekend or another.

She should decide which program’s weekend she wants to attend on a particular date, and call the others and ask for her options.

I would not advise dropping any programs at the moment, although she may very well decide not to attend her lower-priority weekends after she’s been accepted one or two places she likes better. But schedule now, decide later.

Thank you everybody. I finally gor the links to work. Initally I registered for the site, logged in, and the links did not work When I logged out off the site the links worked. That site is excellent and I am lerning quite a bit. My daughter received two more interview invites today from Sloan-Kettering and University of Indiana, so the conflicts keep increasing. There are still 5 more schools that don’t send interview invites until January, so this situation will get more complex over time, and my daughter will be spending her entire last semester of school traveling to interviews. She obviosuly applied to too many programs, but I thik it is safe to assume that after this many interview invitations it is likely she will get accepted to at least one program, and all of the programs are ones that she would like to attend (no safety schools). There are two reach schools, but they are ones who don’t send invitations until January.

Thank you again everyone!

@ScaggsvilleScott:

From what I recall, Rockefeller does not interview applicants. Instead, applicants are accepted from their written application alone. Harvard used to do this as well, but that was changed a couple years ago.

At a certain point, there are only so many weekends (7-ish) between when the interview season begins and ends. So if more interview invitations are received than that, then your daughter may have to make some decisions and respectfully start declining some invitations to programs that are lower on her list.

If your daughter applied to Harvard BBS, she should have heard yesterday if she was invited for an interview or not.
