2014 Elks Mvs Scholarship

I’ve applied to some local schools (U of Mn TC, Gustavus Adolphus, etc.) but I will be attending Vanderbilt University next year (recently got in ED).

For those anxiously awaiting information on this thread: we are in KY. My daughter applied by the 6th. She just received an emailed confirmation from the local lodge that her application was being forwarded to the district round (she received notification on the 15th). There was no mention whatsoever of a local scholarship. She had to go to a neighboring town to apply, as our city doesn’t have a lodge. I looked at the national website, and it appears there have only been 16 MVS winners from our state in the last 5 years … so I don’t think there is a lot of involvement from KY…but maybe the applications aren’t very strong as a whole - not sure.

In using the rubric posted near the beginning of this thread, I would say my daughter is: strong in ECs and Leadership, strong essay, very average ACT, strong GPA, a couple of exhibits were theatre reviews of productions in local newspapers (she is an actress and the reviews support her EC/resume).

I hope our district process is as well-done as our local process was. The local lodge verified receipt of the application by email and then replied by email when judging was complete, along with the outcome. We were appreciative of that…even if she is rejected from the next round, I hope they are as responsive.

Best of luck to all of you, and I hope this information helps someone.

Oh yes forgot this in the post above, she is also strong in the area of financial need…I would say this may have helped her application.

My lodge said they wouldn’t be done judging or notify winners until the beginning of the year :(

I found this on-line:

Judging deadlines for the MVS contest are as follows:

Dec. 6, 2013 MVS applications due
Jan. 1, 2014 Lodge Judging Completed
Jan. 22, 2014 District Judging Completed
Feb. 12, 2014 State Judging Completed

These dates are from the following article:

Thanks for the info CasualParent!

I can’t believe more people haven’t posted that they have heard news. My son has not heard anything yet, either. Either way, I’d love to see the applications. I bet they are very interesting and inspiring.

I live in Michigan and after calling my clueless Elks lodge I was finally informed that applications are being reviewed right now!

I hope I haven’t gotten my hopes up too much. I really want this local scholarship. I’m afraid I’m gonna be crushed if I don’t get it lol

Yeah, I’d be so happy if I got something…

Has anybody gotten any news back from them? When will they email us if we made it pass the local rounds.

Probably right after the first of the year mostly everyone should be notified

No results yet ):

@jjonesjonny65 I don’t think a letter of rec counts as an exhibit. i had 8 pages double sided. We would have done 10 (the max), but we ran out of time. Unfortunately, no athletics currently at our school. I put awards where I was recognized for service, honor roll, champion in various competitions, certificates of my involvement in national scholar associations (like NSHSS), and other things.

@CasualParent Interesting that local judging must be complete by the 1st. My lodge said they would do their judging in like early January at their next meeting. Hopefully my application isn’t disqualified.

@thesportsman24 - It’s possible the timeline for local and district levels are applicable to the state in the on-line article. I would imagine the state and national timeline are consistent. If your lodge told you early January, they must have a different timeline. Good luck! Hope you get good news.

Maybe we will all find out news in the next couple of weeks! I’m getting so tired of waitingggggggggggg…

We all are tired of waiting. At least it appears I will get my Coca Cola Scholarship decision and we will get our Elks decision before school gets back in session.

We meet again, haha! Same here, it might be awhile. My Elks Lodge sent my application for the next level (district?) just yesterday…

was it the national elks that notified you?
