Ethnicity: Half Caucasian, Half Burmese (Asian)
Gender: Male
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): IDK if I’m an URM, my father only went to community college for an associates, my sister died 7 years ago (one of my essays was on how it affected me, sounds lame but mine was probably one of the better death essays)

Reflection: I am like 35% surprised I got in, but I expected it 65%. Very happy!
Strengths: My essay portions and those short answer questions were strong, my ACT.
Weaknesses: SAT and GPA
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I wrote about a unique topic in both of my essays.

This is going to sound very pretentious and conceited and well I got in soooooo, but I think the reason I really got in was because I was different from everyone else. I like to think of myself that way and I think that got through to the Admissions Council in my essays and in my short answers.
I wasn’t the plain-jane “aww I helped at the old folks home and I try really hard in my classes and my love for piano is immense :’)” or the “ever since i started football it has impacted me in so many different ways” BLAH

General Comments: Hoping to hear back well from William & Mary. I also got into NC State Engineering.

Decision: Accepted!!!

Objective:

Teacher Recommendation: One from AP Bio teacher, pretty sure it was stellar
Counselor Rec: She loves me so pretty sure this was stellar???
Additional Rec: nooope
State: North Carolina
School Type: Public (not that great…only two people admitted this year as far as I can tell)
Ethnicity: Caucasian
Gender: M
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): lol absolutely nothing

Reflection: AHHHHH!!! I wasn’t sure about this at all… I know my test scores and GPA are fine for an in-state student, but my ECs really aren’t great at allllll compared to so many people’s resumes on here, so I was understandably apprehensive. Really happy to be admitted!
Strengths: Test scores, rank, did the best I could in the school I was in???
Weaknesses: Lack of ECs
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I think my essay was what pulled my acceptance in, tbh? The essay is SO important for UNC… I must have gone to 3 or 4 different admissions events and it was always stressed. Make sure your supplement is unique, cogent, and really shows who you are. Take a risk. Don’t stress about it!!! I planned and planned for my Common App and wrote a bunch of drafts and ended up submitting an okay essay. I wrote the UNC supplement in about two hours without stressing and it ended up being my best essay for all my schools.
General Comments: Good luck!!! Waiting for decisions from Duke, USC (re: cali!), and Tufts, but I’m really happy I get to choose between UNC and NCSU now if it comes down to it.
