2014 Interviews

I have my interview in 2 hours, and I already failed a quiz today. Today is not going well.

I’m also in shirt-and-tie because my guidance counselor told me to dress like that. It seems that no one on this thread dressed in a tie. I’m so uncomfortable; 50 minutes 'til interview.

just take off the tie! if you feel uncomfortable, then it will come off in your interview.

mine is in half an hour!

My Interviewer asked me the question I most dreaded, “why MIT”

I said, like an idiot, first and foremost, “the name”

I’m such an idiot.

Hey, Mikalye or mollie, I don’t know if you saw it or not, but in case you didn’t, I had a question about a page back, and I’d still really like an answer to it.

Thanks!

@raincoat

I got that question, too, but cleverly disguised as “would you apply if it was early decision?”

“The name” probably not so good. They have a specific bullet point on their tips about essays about that. I guess it all depends on your EC and how he viewed it in context with your other responses. It could come off as this huge thing, or it could be tiny- it’s all about the context.

I also said that MIT is pretty much the only technical school that I’m applying to. Probably not so good either. But then again, he kept pumping me for names of other schools… what is with that?

Hi TheRaven,

I saw your question and I struggled a bit to answer it. The issue, as has been seen many times on this board is that there is a variety in EC’s. There are some 2850 Educational Councilors operating all over the globe. In Lebanon, Nepal, the Marshall Islands, Botswana Vietnam, and most other sites, there are EC’s. Now we are all trained, and I would like to think that with the great majority of EC’s you could and should certainly raise this. It is an important part of your life. Indeed, it is usually better to truly express who you are than to try and cover over a gaping void in your life.

That being said, I have said here many times that while I am happy to answer general questions about the interview and the interview process, I am less comfortable offering individual advice, and this is one of those occasions when I have to rely on that. There is some variation amongst the EC community and your mileage may vary. You will need to take a judgment call at your interview, based on meeting your EC. Good luck.

Sounds like just the answer I was looking for. Thanks! =D

Ahh so nervous I have my interview tomorrow!!

What are you guys planning to bring to the interview?

And also what are you wearing?

I had my interview Wednesday afternoon. It really was pleasant. I wore a t-shirt with Admiral Ackbar’s head that says “It’s A Trap.” He didn’t at all seem put off by the informal dress.

We had mostly a really fun conversation. I want to be a lawyer eventually and he happened to be a lawyer. We talked a little bit about politics, the role of law in society, the meaning of leadership, the nature of the college essay process, the people from my school that he’s interviewed in the past, his experiences at MIT, the value of competition, the merits of gap years, and all kinds of good stuff. It wasn’t my finest interview, but it was definitely my most enjoyable.

Try not to be nervous. I really did find it fun.

Hey guys! One question really quick.

I had my MIT interview today and it lasted around 2hrs and 10 minutes…
Is that good? or bad? or does it have any effect?

We really had a good time though. We had ours at a Barnes & Nobles Cafe and he bought me a book at the end after asking me go around the bookstore and choose “a book that I will buy if I had gotten a $25 giftcard from somebody.”

Are you kidding? That sounds like the most awesome interview ever… He bought you a freaking book???

yeah. he was like, " Ok, this is not part of the interview but I am gonna ask you one more question. Go around this bookstore. Say, if you have gotten a $25 gift card from somebody. I want you to get me the book that you would buy." Then, I was like, “$25??” and he said, " yeah, maybe 5 bucks more or less" then, I brought in a book on the biography of Adolf Hitler and told him that I really admired Hitler for what he did for Germany post-WWI…remember, Germany was in ashes after WWI. And told him that if Hitler had not started the WWII and the Holocaust stuff, he would definitely be the best leader of all time…Then, he said he was really impressed and said b/c of that, he is buying me that book…I was like WOW!!!

Time really went by so fast. I did not notice 2 freaking hours until i looked at my cellphone. I hope i get admitted.

Jesus christ… I hate ■■■■■■

^ Which post do you suspect being a ■■■■■?

If you had a really good time then of course it was a good interview… unless your perception of “good time” is horribly wrong.

@Derivate: probably the guy whose EC bought him a book.

a book about Hitler no less…

I guess you’re right, my EC bought me a drink though… =)

Can you elaborate on “the traits that MIT is looking for”?
