2014 MIT Early Action Countdown Thread

Heh… I gave the application a shot in the dark, but I am pretty excited. MIT could open up so many possibilities if I get accepted and choose to attend. Good luck everybody!

Heh. Like most people here, I’m anticipating getting deferred EA and rejection RD…but I’m excited nonetheless.

At MIT in past years, approximately equal numbers of EA applicants are admitted EA and RD. So if you are deferred (as most EA applicants usually are), your chances of being admitted RD are basically just as good as they were during EA.

@molliebatmit,
I am kind of confused at your post. If my chances in RD are basically just as good as they were during EA, and I got deferred from EA…doesn’t that mean my chances are not good?
T_T

@dosoon - I’m confused by your post.

molliebatmit said “your chances of being admitted RD are basically just as good as they were during EA.”
I am questioning the inverse. For example, if someone was qualified to get accepted EA, why would they become deferred to RD in the first place?
If someone were to be accepted RD but deferred EA, what happened between EA and RD that made them the right candidate for MIT?
I am aware of the fact that you can send in supplements and such, but I believe there are cases of people getting in RD without updating their applications since EA.

MIT: [“We are committed to taking no more than 30% of our total admitted freshman class under Early Action.”](<a href=“http://www.mitadmissions.org/topics/apply/early_action_versus_regular_action/index.shtml]"We”>http://www.mitadmissions.org/topics/apply/early_action_versus_regular_action/index.shtml)

That’s probably the sole reason.

Simply put, I believe the odds are against me. haha
Thank you for your link though =)

Only a couple of days left til decisions, let us hope I can distract myself til then.

The Prefrosh MIT party sounds awesome lol! I forgot who said this but someone mentioned that his/her mum told him/her that EA acceptance is unlikely and I lol’d when I read that because my mum said the exact same thing to me hahaha! I guess we’re all in the same boat. I agree with VAL, if I don’t get into MIT then I’ll accept it and hopefully get in elsewhere and have a great undergrad experience so I shouldn’t stress 24/7. I have finals starting Dec. 14 so hopefully that will keep my mind off of decisions… (emphasis on hopefully LOL)

The way I see it, if we have an 11% chance of getting in early, and we get deferred, then we have another 11% chance for RD.

So really just by applying EA, we really have a 22% chance of ultimately getting in (either EA or RD, assuming EA deferral).

Sorry, but that’s not how probability works. The chance of getting at least one of those times (again, assuming the chances match the overall statistics for both early action and regular action, and assuming you won’t be rejected early action) is 1 minus the chance of getting in neither time, which is (1 minus the chance of getting in early) times (1 minus the chance of getting in regular). It comes out to about 21%; not much different, but it’s important to know that probabilities don’t add up like that.

Somebody fails in probability :p

Although I understand this is an MIT thread and most people applying to MIT have a strong background with math and numbers, let me offer my perspective on things relating to probability of getting into MIT.

(Your application)/(Blackhole like formula for determining students’ acceptance into MIT EA)=low
(Your application)/(Blackhole like formula for determining students’ acceptance into MIT RD)=low
low x low = still low.

On a more optimistic side, there are less than 10 days (hopefully) until we get our decisions back!

Well, I mean, the chances of any one person getting in aren’t that great either way. But I think it’s useful to know that roughly equal numbers of EA applicants get in during EA and RD. EA deferral isn’t necessarily the end of the road.

Also, given that we’re in the approximate vicinity of the decision date being released, is somebody going to call creating the decisions thread?

Already?!? Won’t we just clutter it?

Wait… the MIT Admissions website ([MIT Admissions: Admissions Statistics](http://mitadmissions.org/topics/apply/admissions_statistics/index.shtml)) says that while 540 EA applicants got in EA, only 299 EA applicants got in RD. That doesn’t really seem equal.

EA DECISIONS RELEASED ON THE 16TH!!!

[MIT Admissions | Blog Entry: “Early Action Decisions: Wednesday 12/16”](http://www.mitadmissions.org/topics/apply/deadlines/early_action_decisions_wednesd.shtml)

AAAAAAHHHH!!! my heart’s racing! i’m nervous already and it won’t even be available for another week-ish!

@soadquake981: I think it’s because they’re weighed against all of the other applicants, and approximately the same percentage of EA applicants from the pool are selected. Does that make sense?

Also, EEEEEE! Decisions next Wednesday!!! :D

THATS TOO LATE!

I’m going to Boston for vacation the 15th… now have to wait while I’m up there.
