2014 RD decisions: discussion thread

well this has been a lovely weekend… WL from CIT and reject from MIT… hopefully April 1st will be better…

@IB: what does being black have to do with SAT prep? there’s plenty of white/yellow/orange/whatever people who don’t get a lot of SAT prep.

I don’t understand how you can say that based on the paltry information in this thread. CC is not representative. People are more likely to post their results if they were accepted, more likely to post if they were waitlisted, and more likely to post if they were rejected with extremely high scores. The average applicant who was not admitted is probably along the least likely to post, because no one wants to brag about messing up. No one wants to write down the facts of it or think about it any longer than they have to.

Do you really expect MIT to accept every person with a 2400? They can’t do that. They would take up nearly a third of the entering class (given that they all came). Princeton accepts slightly under 50% of perfect scorers. MIT likely does about the same. Which means that at every top school, tons of them are rejected. Nonetheless, at MIT, as at HYPSM[insert top school here], likelihood of admission increases exponentially as SAT scores increase (Check out the PDF in this OP: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/sat-preparation/865226-addressing-few-concerns.html</a>). MIT is not ignoring SAT scores or GPA or any other hard “stats.” It’s very presumptuous to say “they’re doing it wrong” when the excellence of the school shows that each class is a well-chosen group of one thousand excellent students.

“I’m like in a state of shock right now… I haven’t gotten around to how I’m gonna tell my parents yet they are in a bad mood already today”

If your parents have done any research at all, they know that very few students get accepted to MIT… even though many are very qualified… so acceptance is a bonus, and rejection is expected/OK. (If they don’t know that, then send them some CC excerpts).

So go ahead and tell them the news. Tell them you are disappointed. And be ready to talk about your remaining favorite options so you can start planning for your happy future. Good luck!

My son got rejected too. As a parent I feel bad because he is disappointed but I truly believe that there are plenty of choices out there and it is not the end of the world that he did not get in to MIT. Life is too short to be hung up about one school.

Millancad: I think he meant that people are acting like idiots, and thereby deserved to be rejected.

@IB, wouldn’t you think that black culture just doesn’t value education nearly as much? isn’t it that even lower class whites & asians will do better than middle-upper class blacks on the SATs? I dunno, I just don’t like how you seem to support it just to take advantage of it.

go HYPS…

Whoops, I quoted the wrong person. My reply was in response to schmyp (SP?) and I’ve now edited my post to illustrate that.

to all accepted, don’t forget to sign the guestbook on your myMIT accounts!!

IvyHopeful’s posted profile does not appear to match any applicants in our database. And that’s all I’ll say about that.

Okay, for us who have been waitlisted or rejected, don’t find fault with MIT. just face the fact.

I am rejected too, but I think this is because I haven’t met MIT’s requirements. MIT is definitely a top-notch school and you guys should never ever doubt that you’ve been treated unfairly. AA perhaps is one of the reasons why so many competitive applicants are rejected, but that’s definitely not the most important one.
But I do think this year’s weird though. So many rejected posts! o my god i am really scared. I do believe however, we will all end up attending a satisfactory school…

and never ever find fault with the school if you don’t get accepted! that’s not the reason!!

this thread reminds me of the “waitlisted” thread in Washington University in St. Louis forum. They blamed the school for waitlisting them. Seemed everything was the school’s fault.

and GO HELL with MIT!! I shall attend Caltech. and Let MIT regrets!

hey guys, we shall all end up attending great schools, and make MIT regrets it doesn’t take us.

It’s funnier how people with lower SAT scores got accepted more often than the ones closer to perfect.

I don’t know what the school is doing.

rats.

where is the guestbook?

For the poster who said that the black culture does not value education. I maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout my entire high school career and took all rigorous courses but I am not valuing my education. I never cut a class nor cut school but I am not valuing my education. That statement was just beautiful.

So your counter argument to that is that the caucasian culture values education?

Both races have students that are highly dedicated while there are those who are unmotivated and dont amount to much.

I have a question- I didnt receive financial aid information with my decision. Is there any idea when I should find out by?

Is MIT affirmative action at its finest? I’m just wondering…

@RustGust:
yes! definitely!

^ I resent that so much. We minorities worked just as hard as you did. But whatever.

I forgot this was today!!! Congratulations to those who got in, and better luck at other schools for those who didn’t. You’ll still be awesome anywhere. :)

Probably depends on when you finished submitting everything (FAFSA, CSS Profile, IDOC, etc…). I can’t remember what all MIT requires.

nk9230, if you submitted your documents on time, you should get a financial aid package on April 1.
