emily–haha i’m sure i’m a long shot too, no worries! I understand what you mean though…it took me FOREVER to decide to apply SCEA (in fact, i still doubt myself once in a while) but then again, i don’t want to apply ED anywhere and I don’t really like any of the other EA options…what’s there to lose?

haha can you guys tell i’m bored today? I’ve posted like 29347238947 times. oops. sorry. =]

Oh okay thanks Smile… all this paranoia from college apps is driving me insane haha.
I know what you mean about posting a ton, this is basically all I do at work! My posts are still in the double digits though so I could afford to be more active XD

And emily good luck!! Sorry I didn’t say so earlier, but like everyone else has been saying you’ll do great. Hooray!

Haha all this talk about outfits makes me wonder what it would be like to be a guy. I was just at a conference thing at Stanford, and for them business attire=slacks and collared shirt. Meanwhile all the girls are running around the hall going “omg what are you wearing?! is this okay, or should i wear these shoes, or something nicer all together?” Goood times

Why do I feel like I’m the only guy here? Not that I mind. It would be pretty great if no guys applied to Yale at all this coming year and I became a sought after minority. In a class full of girls.

“Maybe I can convince him to do interviews =]”

So I know you probably weren’t serious, but I just wanted to clarify that I THINK you can’t have your interviewer know you already (I think I read this in the interview thread) - I know, a bummer, but hey, this way you get to meet new members of the Yale family! ;)

I LOVE clothes. It’s sort of actually embarrassing. Especially since my favorite shoes are all heels, but I can’t walk right in them for anything unless they’re wedges or something. It’s so hard!! Every time I put on my favorite pumps, I feel like I’m an inept transvestite with man feet in shoes three sizes too small or something… not that there’s anything wrong with that except that, well, I’m not inept (I hope) and I don’t have man feet!

I think it doesn’t matter too horribly what you wear to your interview as long as a) you’re not totally sexually harassing your interviewer just by sitting in front of him, b) you’re comfortable, c) you aren’t wearing something completely ridiculous or completely sloppy. Like, I guess I’m saying that I don’t think wearing a sumo wrestler suit is the way to go (although you guys wouldn’t do that anyway, with your excellent fashion sense… right?), but you don’t have to go all Stepford Wife on us, you know? For my interview, I wore my favorite blue kimono-sleeved wrap dress and some really nice earrings I got in Peru and silver pumps, awkward walking and all. My dress was a little short when I sat down, but somehow I don’t think it hurt me too much.

Harvard: I’m glad you liked Princeton. It was never really my scene but obviously tons of people are into it…

Rocker: I think a LOT more girls graduate from college than guys. I don’t remember the exact statistics but I recall it was quite surprising to me. So perhaps there’s a similar discrepancy in the number who apply?

Harvard1009-- i don’t know about H and Y, but i know princeton releases its admissions statistics, where you can check out what %age they admit in each GPA range. I still don’t know if these are dropping freshman year or not. there’s also a thread in “College Admissions” that deals with GPAs under 3.75 and how they fare in highly selective college (i.e. HYPSM etc.) admissions.

also, being palestinian is being a minority, though i don’t think that’s the kind they’re actively pursuing, at least to my knowledge. i read somewhere that middle easterns apply under “caucasian,” but i really have no clue on that one.

also, for all you science-y people out there (harvard1009, that’s you!), are you guys thinking about doing siemens/intel? i’ve just recently looked into it, but i haven’t actually started a project yet, though i am working with a professor this summer. i don’t exactly know how long most people spend on their projects, but i’m assuming it’s too late by now… :(

and about interviews, i actually really want one! i’m not going to be visiting, so it’d have to be and alumni one, but it should be pretty cool to talk to someone who actually went to yale.

i want to go to yale so bad it hurts ;(
lol.

haha, filtering through results threads for confidence boosters. love it, but advise against it.

i read that, and that’s interesting, but it’s also one data point. her rank is strong, but other than that, i’m guessing some other factor got her deferred, and probably not her ethnicity. ii looked at her old posts, and she did get into brown with a 31 on the ACT. guessing she retook it? really, the only weak point was her SAT/ACT which she fixed.

OF COURSE you will get a serious look, even if you had a 3.0 gpa, or so i’d like to think. but i think you have to realize that first, some people love–just like you–things like “stupid nerd crap,” and secondly, there are a LOT of sports (to name a few: tennis, volleyball, and track) that require devotion and are demanding, not just football, and thirdly, that you’re out to convince college admissions officers (and maybe even yourself) of your proficiency–not us.

It all depends on how the app is presented. I know my teacher and counselor recs are going to be excellent, and my essays too (I’m just good at selling myself in writing). My grades aren’t absolutely perfect, but they’re up to par, and so are my test scores. I feel like I’m a solid candidate, and that’s why I never really look at chances threads or anything like that for comparison. I know I have the minimum to be actually considered, and it’s really just up to me to package everything in a particularly attractive way. That’s why I no longer feel competitive at all, with anyone on CC. It just ultimately doesn’t matter, and silly numbers like GPAs and test scores really aren’t important.

That said, good luck to you all. I know each of us here will warrant serious consideration in the admissions process, and hopefully some of us will actually get lucky.

Football isn’t really big in Canada, so I wouldn’t know. I used to play soccer, but I had to drop it because it took up more time than I was ultimately willing to give. I work out 6-10 hours a week, though, but I don’t think I’ll put that anywhere in my app, except maybe in an essay (all of my best thinking is at the gym, lolol). Three practices sounds kind of excessive, though, Harvard; are you sure that number’s accurate?

I really think that’s a misconception. Half of the training for sports like tennis isn’t really on the field…

No, but I mean, three practices a day? Is that even possible, with school? They can’t be legit, full-length practices if you have three per day, rofl…

Weeelll I hate to break up this football conversation (I play golf) but florilegium I know what you mean about shoes! I manage them okay but for prom I wore 4" heels for 7.5 hrs… let’s just say my ankles couldn’t support myself near the end of the night haha. Anyway not that has to do with Yale, I just thought I should share? :D

omg, i love boom boom pow! everytime i hear it in the car while driving (alone) i scream out that fergie chorus. lolol. except, though, i can’t listen to anything while i write my essays or i get distracted and i turn out poorly written things.

speaking of essays, i’m still stuck. i’m just writing one on anything that comes to my mind now.

Lol I have to admit that boom boom pow is really, really catchy.

"well IMO i don’t think tennis or volleyball players put in as much effort, work, sweat, blood, and tears as do football players you truly have no idea what it feels like to be out in 100 degree weather for 3 practices a day. "
Harvard, even though I have a lot of tennis pride, I have to agree with you, we don’t work as hard (or at least, my school’s girl’s tennis team) lol!
Also, going along with what chair2 said, please have some respect for people who enjoy “stupid nerd crap,” it’s pretty disrespectful. I’m horrible at “nerd crap” but I admire the people who really excel in math, science, etc. There has to be all kinds of people in this world to make it diverse, interesting, and keep things running smoothly. If we didn’t have amazing “nerds” contributing to this society, we wouldn’t be as technologically advanced (not that we really are, but we’ve come a long way :]), and likewise with football players :P

Smile!!! Omg that’s so exciting that we have such similar outfits! Well, great minds think alike lol! ;] Haha our skirt lengths are close too! My skirt is a tinyyy bit shorter than that, but I’m not too worried because 1) I’m petite, so it doesn’t look skanky on me and 2) it’s high waisted, so it gives the illusion that it’s pretty modest? Lol I’m still debating on it…

Mmmmm I love clothes hahaha! It’s kind of sad. I even wrote my end-of-the-year APUSH research paper on the fashions of the Gibson Girl vs. the Flapper and how the transition of fashion trends reflected the social, economic, political changes of America and such lol. I was surprised my teacher (conservative, quaint but serious man who never ceases to say “grades don’t matter, skills matter”) even let me write it, but it turned out great, it was so much fun
Shoes are pretty great too :]

Hahahah I love how I came back after just one night and missed almost 2 pages on football talk. I agree, football is intense but give some of those soccer/basketball/volleyball people some credit. They work pretty darn hard too. I suck at tennis, haha so most of the time it’s me running after the ball. Not much of a sports fan…I’d rather just run with my music and do some pilates. and swim! All for fun though, not on any teams. And I love listening to fergie when i run hahah. boom boom pow is so freakin catchy though. It’s not good but you got to admit it’s catchy!

Demiitasse–haha I TOTALLY freaked out when I read what you were wearing because the first color I thought of was brown when I picked out the skirt. But I have darker hair so it would make me look all gloomy or something haha. Yeah, my skirt is 3-4 above my knees but agreed, since it’s high waisted (and it’s REALLY not that short), it’s very modest but still cute. and WOW I did a project on fashion too! (not as academic as yours of course) We were supposed to do something about another culture so I did french fashion and how it has influenced the fashion industry everywhere and how it has changed over time(not an excuse to include CHANEL or louis vuitton or anything…hahhaha). too bad my teacher was a guy…he thought it had great info but didn’t seem all that excited about the pics and the colors…?

cavalierpup–I love this conversation about shoes and clothes (since I can’t really join the football talk). Loooove heels. Too bad there are not enough occassion to wear them Ironically, I can walk in heels but I hate hate hate wearing tennis shoes. My shoes consists of flipflops (in every color imaginable), tons of flats, some gladiators and other sandals, and then my heels. I either need completely flat shoes or heels. Besides, tennis shoes always feel stuffy and bulky. hahaha.

And I agree with rocker. All of us have a shot…we each have something different to offer. I’m pretty sure that they’ll be seriously considering some of us. Let’s just say we won’t be the applicant where the adcoms are going “Wow. Definitely NOT Yale material”. Now we just have to hope some of us have what Yale is looking for, whatever that may be.

I’m not “nerdy” or anything (and DEF. not a math/science nerd haha) but I have to say, one of the strongest parts of my app is academics. Just because of my classes and grades and such. They’re not like insane like some others on CC, but it’s one of the most challenging at my school and probably in my state (not exactly a competitive state…). But I know that my academics alone won’t get me into Yale. It’s not like I’m a genius or anything

OH! and I brainstormed on those short takes for Yale last night at like midnight (goood time to write, believe me.) It’s so random though…I answered everything as honestly as possible sooo it was definitely random. But they’re funny haha. I might have to revise it a bit. Right now, I’m not sure what in the world they can learn about me after reading those besides that I’m …well, random. At least I got some ideas.

Harvard–Tell us about your trip to Princeton!! (at least I think it was you). I would LOVE to hear about it, I’m interested in applying there as well, I just won’t be able to visit it :(

Ok, honestly… what is up with the short takes!? Makes me feel like some admission officer somewhere is collecting them for a propaganda packet or something. How much are you really going to learn about me in 25 words, you know? It’s a little disheartening to me the way the word limits for essays and things have gone down over the years (or so I’ve heard).

I don’t even remember my short takes.

I can’t stand Fergie. I used to listen to a lot of M.I.A. and The Decemberists and Okkervil River, but then they got really trendy and all my friends play their music so much it nauseates me. I just get sick of things when I hear them too often, you know? I need a little variety! Now I’m into classical mostly and opera, although I don’t know a thing about 'em - I just listen to what I like.

Haha, wow! I can’t say I’m upset I missed all the sport discussion…lol.
That is so cool! I loved learning about this during APUSH! I thought it was kind of interesting that the flapper look in the 20s was so closely tied to the ‘new woman’ and femininity, but the flapper look was almost more boy-ish in a sense…like it was in the fashion to have very short hair, and look skinny, and smoke…basically things that were considered to be more masculine.

Wow, sorry for the digression, but this idea came up in our class discussion and I thought it was really interesting. I’ll miss APUSH :(

I’m not a math/science ‘nerd’ in the typical sense (I don’t do research or science fairs or the AIME or whatever), but I really enjoy them and I do pretty well in them. But at the same time I love humanities. Anyway, has anyone here been able to visit Yale? If so could you tell us about it? I haven’t been able to visit ANY college in the East Coast, so I would really appreciate it if anyone could give their thoughts of their visit to Yale (or Princeton, etc.). Thanks!
