2014 SCEA hopefuls?

My GPA will not help me. (3.8-3.85~ish. Not sure yet) My SATs might (23+) and my SATIIs def look good (two 800s). But I really hope my stats don’t ruin it for me! I have great ECs, passions, essays, and legacy. GAH! So nerve-racking.

"because it’s perfection and happiness wrapped up pretty buildings? "
Heck yes!
Megavortex, your stats seem fine. Just craft your application and focus on your strengths.

Am panicking about my stupid low Spanish SAT Subject Test score (640) right now… One score won’t make a huge difference as long as I have four other decent ones to counterbalance it (800 790 750 720), right?

I don’t know how I missed this thread! I’m definitely applying early… though anxiety is kicking in as July 1 approaches. I have some national recognition for service but who knows with an acceptance rate just over 7%? Too bad we won’t be applying after the new residential colleges are built, then there’d be a little more room for us to get in haha

lol @ the residential college thing. when are those being built anyways?

also, about july 1, and just for clarification. that’s when common app is released, which means every school that’s affiliated with it also releases its supplements? so july 1 = college application madness starts?

july 1st? That’s so soon. I feel like all this college frenzy just hit me with no warning at all. I just got my SAT scores back today too. got a 800 in writing which was totally unexpected, and then 710 in CR and a 740 in math, not the greatest. it’s 2250, which if I got that from like a 750 in all three, I wouldn’t retake- but the 710 and the 740 aren’t pretty at all… do you guys think Yale wouldn’t like it if I retook the test?

chair2, I’m pretty sure the construction was postponed but Morse and Stiles will still be renovated (I think those are the two left)

Right, July 1 is when the Common App becomes available, and I’m almost positive that’s when Yale’s supplement is available too; I think that’s what would make sense.

Lanaesque I’m definitely not an expert but I think that’s a strong score, so if you weren’t to get in, it wouldn’t be because of a 710 in CR. Anyone else have thoughts though?

i’m sure a 710 CR won’t keep you out, but it probably won’t help you.

i’m retaking the SAT and ACT again (3rd and 2nd time, respectively) because i’ve been having a LOT of bad luck. i’m also mid 2200s, like lanaesque, though i guess you could say my scores are sort of even across the board.

Thanks guys, for your input; I’m thinking of retaking it. I’ve just heard some colleges frown on retaking tests even if your scores are good enough. But it’s Yale, and they’ll prolly understand… hopefully. Thing is if I had another gigantic hook I wold probably let it slide, but I don’t, so I’m at least trying to make academics solid.

I heard about the new buildings on the yale daily website, chances are those are probably not going to go up in our college generation. I don’t know how I would feel being at a new residential college though, that kind of throws off the whole rc tradition thing doesn’t it?

oh, and a quick question, have you guys received any booklets from yale yet? I got a letter so requested one, and I’ve gotten stuff from every other college, but nada from the y.

i got a letter, but that’s it.

What could possibly be the disadvantage of applying early?? I mean, if it has statistically higher acceptance rate, and if it’s not binding, then why would anybody NOT apply EA?

There isn;t a disadvantage, although it’s all a matter of opinion, unless you could be getting a very prestigious award between EA and RD.

Although EA has a higher acceptance rate, the level of students who apply is greater so it “equals” out. If you are an applicant whi will get in, you would be accpeted EA and RD, to whichever one you applied. EA is nice because you have know you are accpeted in December and can avoid the huge waiting period as well as get your stuff organized before most other people.

so… pretty much the only advantage of applying to EA is knowing whether you got in or not earlier?

I want to apply to Yale early but I’m afraid I’ll get denied and won’t have a chance to even apply for RD. How good do you have a decent/ok chance of getting accepted in SCEA?

well if you apply SCEA and are deferred, you still have a “chance” of getting in. I know this happened to several people this year. If you are denied SCEA, there was never a “chance” you would be accepted RD (many, many people are deferred). i don’t mean that to sound harsh…

to powerbomb: basically, yes that is the biggest advantage. People will bring up other points including it had better financial aid, acceptance rate, etc. - but these are so minimal if they exist at all.

Excerpt from the Yale website:

“[SCEA] also provides us with the opportunity to make an offer of admission early in the year to strong candidates whom we are certain that we would admit whether they apply in the fall or the spring.”

Furthermore, “An early admissions program provides a way for students who feel that Yale is their first choice, and who are comfortable presenting an application in November rather than January, to obtain a reply from our Admissions Office early in the year. We made our program non-binding so that our admitted students would still be free to change their minds or to review the financial aid they may be offered from other schools later in the year.”

I hope this helps.

do you mean that more people are deferred than they are denied?
I’m doing a research this summer and I’m shooting for Intel STS.
Although I can’t guarantee getting into Intel semifinalist or finalist,
if i do, that would be a BIG DEAL, and I don’t want to throw away the chance of getting accepted to Yale in RD if I get denied in SCEA.
Mythbuster 2000, i posted a thread in “What are my chances?” awhile back… do you mind looking at it and giving me an opinion if i should go for SCEA or not?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/732877-i-need-make-list-match-colleges-please-help-me.html</a>
I need to decide soon, because I want to start the application as soon as possible.
many people did give me opinions already and although many of them told me to go for SCEA, I’m still not sure if I should because I’m not sure if I’m a strong applicant for SCEA. I really like yale, and I don’t want to lose the chance to get into such a great school…

Yes. more people were deferred for the class of SCEA 2013 than denied. Here’s the breakdown for SCEA:

Total Number of Applicants: 5557
Number Admitted: 742
Number Deferred: 2644
Number Denied: 2128

By the way, I’ll look at your chance thread later today.

I like everyone else on this thread have fallen irrevocably in love with Yale  Its gorgeous…the campus…the academics…the PEOPLE! I’m applying SCEA, and I already know I’m going to be completely nervous and crazy and insane while the results are coming back this year… bites nails
Anyyyways, good luck to everyone!!! :)

Yes, indeed - good luck!

Have you guys started your essays yet? I’ve written a few possible personal essays, but haven’t decided what to do about the short Why Yale? prompt yet. There’s so much to say!

i have written (or more accurately rambled on my blog, haha) some essays out. they’re all pretty rough. for why yale, i’m focusing on the departments that stand out at yale (in my case, i’m going for the art) and then the whole liveliness of yale, etc. a lot to write. i’ve done some research so i should be able to sound fairly knowledgeable, at the least. lol
