2014 ucsd decisions - statistics

I still haven’t received an email from UCSD about my decision. I followed some advice from here and checked on the TritonLink and found out I was accepted!
But still, shouldn’t they have sent an email as well, confirming the decision?

Decision: Accepted

Stats:[ul]

[] ECs listed on app: Red Ribbon Committee, WASC Committee, Casa Youth Shelter, CSF, Interact Club (Vice President), Robotics Club (Vice President, Previously Secretary), 500+ Volunteer Hours
[] Job/Work Experience: -
[] Essays (subject and responses): In the first essay, I wrote about learning from my parent’s history escaping the Vietnam War and working from scratch to be where they are now. From this lesson, I inherited their trait of preservation and determination, something I wish to pass down to people of all circumstances. The second essay, I wrote about being an ESL student in elementary school, even though I was born in the US. I elaborated on how I overcame my language barriers.
[] Hook (TASP, RSI, Research, etc.): AVID, ELC
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: California
[] School Type, Average Stats of School (if available): Public, API 843, California Distinguished School

[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Low Income, First Generation
[] Strengths: Essays, Volunteer Work, Leadership in Clubs, Distinguished by Teachers
[] Weaknesses: Low Test Scores, Courseload (School lacks variety of AP Classes, No IB Classes Available), No Athletics
[li] Why you think you were accepted/wait listed/denied: I believe I was accepted because of the amount of volunteer work I have done. I also show determination through my essay and my desire to attend a good 4 year college with AVID. I am involved and make it known that I will continually be involved in college and after, plus I have leadership qualities. I’m not the type who has slacked off and all of a sudden decided to work hard, I show gradual improvement and honest effort.[/li][/ul]Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: I’m quite lucky to be accepted by UCSD, considering all the other’s stats. Maybe it’s luck, and maybe the admissions officers really saw the things I stated in the “Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/denied” sections. I greatly appreciate the admit because SD is my first choice school, over UCB or UCLA. Congrats to all those made it, I’m definitely sure that you all deserved it. For those waitlisted, keep hope!

@ Litheron: They didn’t send any emails.

ACT: 27. (34 on English…31 in writing…23 science…21 math) I think since my English score was so high, that stood out to them. Plus, I’m not applying to be a bio or chem major, so math is irrelevant to my app.

Weaknesses: Math/science act scores. Perhaps not sending in Sat II’s?
Why you think you were accepted/wait listed/denied: Probably because I’m hispanic, unique, intelligent…etc.

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: Congrats to everyone  still waiting to hear from USC! It was weird when I get into UCSD…because I actually got a call from a dean in the English department. I checked online afterwards, and sure enough, I was in.

Strengths: EC’s + work experience, GPA?
Weaknesses: SAT scores
Why you think you were accepted/wait listed/denied: well-rounded, though not necessarily solid in academic portion compared to other applicants at my school
Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: I was a bit surprised after I found out I got rejected by LA the night before. I’m really glad that UCSD took the time to consider EVERY part of my application, from my GPA to my EC’s/awards/work experience. With their point system, I felt that it was pretty clear what they were looking for: solid performance in every aspect. I felt that LA (my first choice) admitted students in my school who had 2000+ SAT scores and 3.9+ UW GPA, but weren’t really involved in anything, meaning that they simply went straight home right after school while I always had practice for band or piano lessons. But in the end, I think I’ll be happy to be attending UCSD =)
