Follow up to that question. So if one is not accepted to their first choice, UCLA considers you for the second choice? Or do they look at both choices and decide which you fit better into? I’m going to put English first and American Lit second.

If you are not TAP certified, they do not consider your 2nd choice at all. It’s non-existent. If you are TAP, then you get 2 shots. If you don’t get your 1st, then they go to #2.

Your call of course, but I would recommend making your 1st choice the one you have the best chance of admission, as long as it’s really something you’re interested in.

Aha! Thanks guys, that makes a big difference. Well I’ll have a 3.9 if everything holds up, so I can keep English 1 and Am Lit 2, but there’s really no difference in the majors, so I’ll probably switch Am lit back to 1 then. Thanks guys.

@fulload IF you are TAP Certified, UCLA will consider you for you first major, like every other applicant. IF you are denied for your first choice of major, then UCLA will review you for your second choice of major. That is the way TAP works. You are correct if putting English first. It is more competitive to get into than American Lit.

@Fullload Put the major that you want the most as your first choice. Remember UCLA might not let you change majors when you start school. Trust me, I speak from experience. It really makes no sense to put the major that you have the best chance of getting in as because if you don’t get into your first major, than you will be reviewed as your second. You have two shots. However, you only have one chance at your first major.

Got it, thanks guys. :)

Also, if you are applying to an impacted major, make sure to put that first. Since they won’t let you switch once you are accepted.

Not clear on that logic really. If I decide to accept TAP, I will be putting English (impacted) and Am lit as a back up, If I don’t enroll in TAP, I will just do Am lit, since it has a better acceptance average and is not impacted.

I didn’t do TAP, so I don’t know exactly how it works. But @fullload I know you’ve been on the fence about TAP. What happens if you don’t complete the requirements? If you say you’re doing TAP, they accept you, and you don’t finish, does anyone know what happens?

@fulload Your plan is bullet proof! DO exactly what you are planning! Impacted majors and other selective majors (Reaches) should be put as first choices.

I don’t think anything happens @2016candles, he’s just tossed in the regular pile. Same as if you TAP’d but didn’t fulfill requirements. In fact, that would be the scenario.

Actually, I’m going to amend that: if he put impacted major first because he was tapping, and then TAP fell through, he only has that major for consideration.

As an aside, who would think English would be impacted! I thought English majors were on the downturn, based on what I read. This appears a complete contradiction to the prevailing theory… :)>-

@lindyk8 Did you by any chance major in English?

I’ll be surprised at this point if she (the counselor) convinces me to join TAP. I feel real good about my application right now. I’m applying for a major that’s 3.4 avg, and I have a 3.9. I have several ECs, lots of published work, and my essays are really solid. I have a meeting with her soon, but I already know she wants me to complete all this other stuff that I’m just not going to have time for. But I’m definitely going to hear her out.

I would join for sure if English and Am lit had differences, but they don’t at all. They are identical in almost every way. I can join the creative writing focus in both, and take all the same upper division courses in both. Weird, but true. I do think I take a few more literature courses, but I was going to take those anyway.

As a matter of fact I did, @collegedropout1. I double majored with journalism, a double major they stopped right after they let the likes of me get it. (It was insanely easy, like a minor!)

In fact @fullload would be surprised at how much we have in common, despite the occasional loggerheads. I seriously considered law school, and have mixed feelings that I didn’t pursue it. (My grades weren’t good enough, anyway…)

@lindyk8
That makes sense. I think that’s why I personally would put the “easiest” major first- sort of hedging my bets. But since you can’t put and impacted major as your second choice, it’s kind of a tossup.

@fullload whatever major you get, the real world is going to have no idea what the difference is between them. Hell, I don’t even know.

You have to make your own decision, of course, but I agree with your path to forego TAP. You’re solid enough and the pressure to do all that in one year is nuts.

Lindy, interesting, I had no idea you were an English major and had an interest in law. I exonerate you of all wrong doing. Carry on. ;)

Sustained @fullload, I think we have the debate gene. Or let’s put it this way: I DO!!!
