Northwestern's Theater program is amazing! Because the class is small-average 50/50 split for only 100 students, I thought it would be fun to have a thread just for YOU!

Who was accepted this year?

Also--What were your stats? Do you feel your theater ECs were the deciding factor in getting accepted or essay or? Often potential applicants on CC will ask if they will be likely to be accepted to NU's theater program. This thread might help them know in a tangible way as to whether they have a shot/or should apply. Remember how you felt?

Ok… I’ll break the ice! DD was just accepted ED School of Communications, Theatre.

Her stats were;

ACT: 33
Unwieghted GPA: 3.9
High school: Public, mediocre
AP courses: 7 total + 10 Honors
FA: Hope so!!
ECs: Lots of music and theatre
Awards: YoungArts Finalist, ITS National Finalist, etc.

I have no idea if she’s typical of other accepted NU Theatre majors, but I do know that she can’t wait to meet everyone!

I’m going to try to revive this thread because theatre at SoC is awesome, as APOL said!

Just got accepted yesterday:

SAT: 2200 (CR 800, WR 730, M 670)
Unweighted GPA: 3.9
High school: Homeschooled for part of my time, online schooled for the rest
AP courses/dual enrollment: I’ve taken 7 APs and 6 classes at UW Madison (I’m from Wisconsin)
ECs: A lot! I’ve done about 20 productions since the beginning of high school, I’ve acted professionally in town, started a theatre company with two friends, wrote a play and will be performing it, was on the board of a community theatre group, worked directing kids at a local children’s Shakespeare theatre, started an outreach program for that group…my essays were all about theatre because, as you may have guessed, I adore acting/directing/playwriting/everything theatre related. Yeah…it’s just what I love.
Awards: Some state writing awards, National merit finalist

When I applied, I was really nervous because my math SAT was below NU’s mean score range (700 to 800). I also have gotten B’s in math, and didn’t even take math this year as a senior. If you are like me, you still have a chance! For one thing, you’re being compared with other theatre people, and the average math/science ability is going to be slightly lower than the NU population as a whole. Second, extracurricular commitment and passion can make up for slightly lower scores. So don’t worry–do what you love. :)

Does anyone know if it is true that they accept 50 males and 50 females into the Theatre program? Also, does anyone know if they seek any target mix of MT, Straight Theatre, Directors, Writers or other theatre specialities, or do they just pick the top 50 M/F academically and then see who shows up?

D knows several others who have just been accepted, and they are a TALENTED bunch of kids with very impressive resumes, including several Broadway credits. She can’t wait to finish high school and get started working with everyone!!

I have always heard that they try for a 50/50 mix, but I can tell you that the class of 2014 has less than 100 theatre majors, somewhere in the 90’s. There is no way that NU would know in advance whether they were getting potential MT vs. straight acting kids. Remember that the MT major is a relatively small competitive program and there are voice majors out of the Bienen School of Music who are also competing to become MT majors.

I can tell you that your daughter will also be joining a supremely talented group from the Class of 2014. :)

I guess I thought maybe they could tell from people’s artistic resumes, since one thing we noticed is that only D’s friends with professional performance credits were accepted this year, while kids with equally high stats were not. That led us to believe the resume was factored in somehow.

D also has at least one friend that I know of in the class of 2014, hears they’re a talented bunch, and can’t wait to meet everyone!

I know that D is counting on the MT selection process being competitive!

My D has been accepted to School of Communications and is thrilled! I believe it is her #1 choice at the moment. She did apply under theater but in her acceptance it says School of Communications. Nothing about theater. Is that normal? Does this mean she is not in the theater program… A bit confused please help!

D’s ED letter also only said School of Communications, and like you I wanted to be sure she was in the Theatre department. I called admissions and confirmed it and you might want to do the same, but all was well in D’s case so I do think it’s normal for Theatre majors’ letter to just say they were accept to School of Communications.

I know D is planning to double major, but I’m not sure she’s picked the subject yet so I’m not sure which school. Are there some schools where you need a separate application to do a double major, or can you just start enrolling in classes (I assume for Bienen you need an audition)?
