2015 One Year Transfers?

Let us unite!
I’ll start with myself!
Communications major w pre-med hopes! So far I have 13.3 semester units (20ish quarter) from AP Psychology, AP Biology, and AP US History! That added with 16 units I’m taking this semester leaves 30 units behind! Will try to complete those in one semester (hard I know, dual enrolled in two cc)! Tell me if I’m being crazy, I won’t judge don’t worry. (also ap psych. takes out psych101 in igetc right?!)
Schools Considering:
UCSD
UCSB
UCB (dont like it but dad loves it?)
USC
Rice
UT Austin (maybe??)
…but lets ignore privates and focus on uc’s shall we?
Share your opinions, stats, plans, anything!
Let’s help each other succeed!

You’re crazy.

thanks fam been told that before LOL

You’re welcome.

One year transfer here who loved to overload during my stay at a CC.

34 units in one semester is a huge jump in difficulty from your past/current course load. Also, the feasibility of everything fitting together (all the major prerequisites you need not overlapping, space in the classes themselves, a good batch of professors, being approved for any unit overload without extensive rationale) is extremely low.

I’ve seen a lot of people in similar situations who tried to one-year transfer who would have ultimately had a better shot at getting into such selective schools if they took their time. Most of your listed schools are so selective that you should concentrate on just getting in (especially for selective majors) rather than how long it might take to get in.

Edit: As a pre-med hopeful you probably want to take as many pre-med prep courses at CC anyway. GPA is king when it comes to med school admissions.

that is very true! thank you for your input

I’m a one year transfer, who’s about to graduate next spring with only one year of UCSD in biochemistry and cell biology major. Ask me anything.

@jason861101 hey! first congratulations!!! thats amazing! secondly, thank you so much for offering to help me out! my first question is, do you think they look down upon not having any college transcripts available until January? and have you met or heard anything about the global health major? how competitive is it, etc. thanks again!

As long as you have good fall grades, you’ll be fine. Most important thing is still the number of prerequisite courses you can complete by the end of the spring. I haven’t heard much about global health major actually… I know more about bio research labs since I’m currently in one of the med school’s labs in psychiatry and endocrinology.

I’m a one year transfer as well! Took APs which add up to 18.67 semester units, I took 13.5 in the summer, 19 this fall, and 14 this coming spring. I hope colleges don’t view this as a bad thing.
P.S. (semester units).

Last year I attempted to transfer in one year. I had around 35 units in AP credit so I didn’t have to take too many classes. I actually ended up getting into UCSD but not admitted to the major (computer science) because of how impacted it is. In the end I chose to stay at CC another year for several reasons

  • I didn't get admitted into the major. Trying to get in once you arrive at the university is harder than trying to get in as a transfer.
  • I still had some useful classes I could take at CC. Because I've stayed, I'll have completed literally every possible major prep class before I transfer.
  • I'm also saving a lot of money staying at a CC and working another year.

BIG NOTE: Consider cross-enrolling at a UC or CSU school. In California, any community college student can take any lower-div class at a CSU or UC for basically free.

I’m currently taking a cs class at UCSD right now and only had to pay a $60 registration fee. In the end, I’m still at UCSD (part of the time) this year!

Submitted my app yesterday, remember everyone Fall grades are massive, don’t slack off and finish strong!

@1yeartransfer , did you apply to any other UCs? Berkeley, LA, SB? Did you get into any of them? What was your GPA when you applied? Did you have all your pre-reqs and IGETC completed?

Supposedly, many medical schools look down on CCs and do not like it if an applicant took all BCPM (see https://students-residents.aamc.org/applying-medical-school/article/course-classification-guide/ ) courses at CCs. Of course, if the student majors in a BCPM subject after transferring, s/he will have upper division BCPM courses at the four year school. A non-BCPM major could take some BCPM courses after transfer at the four year school if that is a concern.

I second @ucbalumnus’s point. I have also heard that medical schools aren’t too fond of prerequisite science classes taken at a CC.

I guess thats why I’m trying to transfer early. The only series I’ll be done with are chemistry and biology, so everything else will be higher division. Also, the O-Chem series at my community college is killer, I’d rather get a B at four-year than at a community college.
