[] Summer Activities: Piano lessons and a lot of music performances with a band from my music school.
[] Essays: My essay talked a lot about my love for the Bollywood and Japanese culture. It wasn’t very serious and was borderline crazy since I was describing my unhealthy obsession for Bollywood movies and Japanese calligraphy.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Both of my teachers mentioned the same thing about me, in different words of course, which was that I was very creative, soft-spoken, open minded, and sociable which pretty much describes the type of person I am today and I am extremely grateful for their recommendations since I asked for them last minute.
[] Counselor Rec: My counselor told me that she strongly recommended me and chose the words friendly, task-oriented, and very lady-like as the first words that come to mind when describing me.

[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I was very surprised when Mount Holyoke College accepted me after my rejection at Smith College (Smith College was my first choice, and Mount Holyoke was my second). MoHo really seems to care about a person as a whole and their potential rather than their statistics/grades, in my opinion. Also, I really believe they were inspired by my extreme dedication to art and music.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I was accepted at Agnes Scott College and Loyola University Maryland. I was rejected at Smith College, University of South Florida, and Florida State University. And I have yet to hear from the others.

[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I’m guessing my activities. My school load was also pretty heavy, and I had various college-level classes. My academic curiosity is apparent in my work.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: Simmons (Presidential Scholarship), Merrimack College (accepted Honors with Presidential Scholarship), Clark (with Traina Scholarship). Waitlisted: NYU, Northeastern, Smith. Rejected: Wesleyan. Waiting for: Brown, Harvard, Yale, Cornell, Tufts. (Yes, I applied to many schools, but I figured why not?!)

Although I haven’t been on campus yet, I’m excited to visit come next week!

After the acceptance I took the chance to explore the MoHo website and fell in love.

[] Why you think you were accepted: No idea…I honestly didn’t expect to get accepted…superhappy!*
[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: rejected at Cornell/Dartmouth, waitlisted at a few top LACs, accepted at few too…
[/li]

[/ul]General Comments:
I got a mind-blowingly awesome financial aid package, so… MHC, here I come! <3 Honestly, I’m really grateful to them for giving me this chance. Can’t wait!! (We have to buy some yellow clothes btw…it’s gonna be class of 2015 colour)

^ Yellow is an AWESOME color!! :)

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): Did not take
[] ACT: 35, 36 superscore
[] SAT II: Did not take
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.8 (BUT my school is ranked #2 school in the country by US News, I’m lucky its only 5 minutes from my house!)
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): N/A but probably somewhere in top 15%-25%
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): Did not take
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): Will take HL Spanish, HL Math, HL Chem, HL Bio, SL English, SL History (I put HL History on my app b/c I thought I would take it - turns out IB only lets you take 4 HLs though)
[] Senior Year Course Load: See above, plus Band and Theory of Knowledge S1, Exam Prep S2 (required course at my school)
[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): just school awards plus I have my Girl Scout Silver and Bronze Awards and am working on Gold Award
[/li]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars: Horseback riding (only do local B circuit due to lack of money but I have won several year-end championships), Girl Scouts, Creative Writing Club, FIRST Robotics freshman year (team won Silver at worlds), various “enrichments” required by my school, piano lessons, play flute in school band (not really extracurricular)
[] Job/Work Experience: None
[] Volunteer/Community service: Girl Scouts, help at my barn’s schooling shows
[] Summer Activities: Horseback riding
[] Essays: Wrote a pretty good essay about my crippling shyness and how I had to overcome it for my IOP (a speech required by IB), also I mentioned the quote “shiny red penses of puppies” (from Song of Solomon which my IOP was on) and I think that quote helped them remember me lol; did the “practice makes perfect” essay, I thought it was good
[] Teacher Recommendation: IDK but my Spanish teacher wrote me one, we went to Spain with the school last summer and we know each other fairly well (again, I am shy)
[] Counselor Rec: IDK, I think it was good
[] Additional Rec: N/A
[] Interview: N/A

[/ul]Other[ul]

[] Ethnicity: Caucasian
[] Gender: Female (of course!)
[] Income Bracket: Middle class
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: I am VERY devoted to riding, my essay about what should be a weakness?
[] Weaknesses: No interview, grades aren’t perfect, my essay was about something bad (being REALLY shy)
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: My essay really showed who I was, not about some amazing experience that I had that changed my life forever (like helping kids in Nicaragua or something), and my really rigorous schedule for the past 4 years with still pretty good grades
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted Albion College, University of Findlay, Berry College, Otterbein University (MHC was the only reach school I applied to)

[/ul]General Comments: 21st Century Scholar, I was really surprised by this, I NEVER thought I would get this big of a scholarship especially at my reach school

Dear Ready2011,

“Not many [Extracurriculars ] as my dad was sick and dying for most of high school, but I did participate in a few different things. I think that my dad’s sickness was mentioned by me, my teachers and counselors and maybe they thought I was looking for sympathy but it did play a major role in how well I did… I think they did look at me as a person and what I’ve been through helped me.”

Congratulations on your acceptance to Mount Holyoke College. I know how hard you had to work, how difficult it is to concentrate, how many things you had to give up (starting with attention from your Mom…) while living with a dying parent. That you were able to keep up your grades and earn good test scores are a real testament to your character.

My daughter is just completing her first year at Mount Holyoke now. Her Dad died when she was 12, and it took her several years to recover so her grades as a High School freshman were shaky. I can see Mount Holyoke is the right place for her. She was looking for a community of learners in a supportive environment, and reports she has found that community. She loves Mount Holyoke’s traditions, and has a solid group of friends, whom she describes as “more like me than my friends in High School”: i.e.: hardworking, conscientious, not into a big drinking scene, but fun-loving and healthy.

Although losing a parent as a teenager leaves an empty place in the heart, like you, my daughter never wants people to feel sorry for her. Please private message me if you would like to communicate with my daughter. (There are not many students of single Moms at Mount Holyoke… Although the college is generous with aid, the costs remain a difficult stretch for the daughter of a widow.)
