**2016-2017 Questbridge NATIONAL COLLEGE MATCH Results**

I was matched to the University of Chicago and I was going to post my statistics. I decided to spare you guys. Instead, I am writing this to the people who didn’t get matched or the younger generations desperately scrolling through these forums. I know you guys must be freaking out wondering how you can get accepted when you are going against kids like these but numbers are not everything. Stay away from these forums they will only increase your anxiety. Extracurriculars are not everything. Find something you love and through yourself into it 150%. Immerse yourself in all the opportunities. I am from a town in middle of nowhere Florida and still there were sooooo many opportunities even here. Then when admissions time comes around the right college will recognize your passion and dedication. Do not get disheartened and please always dream big.

@Quester1999 I got the same email. I think it’s generic, but it’s certainly encouraging nonetheless.

Just curious has anyone that did not match have one of their ranked colleges email them about applying for early decision? If so what college? Thanks

Subjective:

  • [] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Science Center/Fabrication Lab (Intern, Course Instructor, Head of Volunteer Training), FIRST Robotics (Team Captain), Girl Scouts (Pending Gold Award), Stem Cell Research Society (Vice-President), Moody’s Mega Math Challenge (Team Leader), Speech/Debate (tons of awards, no position)

[] Volunteer/Community service: Volunteer at Fabrication Lab, started Gold Award project that makes STEM more accessible to low-income students in my community, mentor to novice Debaters and Girl Scouts
    [
] Summer Activities: Working at McD’s, Intern/course instructor at Fab Lab, volunteer robotics instructor for summer camp, off-season fundraising for robotics, cosplay (make costumes for history club and recreation)
[] Essays: I don’t really know what a good essay is tbh, someone from admissions told me they enjoyed reading my essays but when we peer reviewed in class my classmate didn’t like my essay (I still used it anyway tho haha).
I guess I would say my 500 word was an 8/10, I talked about the Suncoast Science Center/ Fab Lab and how it is inaccessible to low-income/minority students due to transportation issues and perception of the Lab as only for very smart engineer-type people. I then talked about my proposed solution that I am currently working on as my Gold Award project (basically bringing the lab to low-income students rather than vice-versa).
My 800 I think was really good (9 or 10/10), I’m pretty proud of it. I used quite a few witty literary techniques (no idea if they even noticed them or not) and the entire essay was based off of comparing myself to a river. I talked about coming from a Pagan background (Druid/Wiccan), being in a wheelchair, and my conflicting identities as a suburban Floridian with ancestral roots in extremely rural Mississippi (where most of my family lives today), among some other events and ideas that have shaped my life and encouraged my passion for astronomy and planetary studies.
    [
] Counselor Rec: I don’t know, he likes me but I also didn’t tell him my full life story you know. Probably an 8/10?
[li] Teacher Rec: AP Lang teacher- 10/10, she writes great recs and we had an hour long chat about what she would write. I think it was probably really good. [/li]AP Physics 1 teacher (10th grade)- 9/10, worked with him at Fab Lab during summers so he knew me outside of school, a very supportive person who I also had an hour long interview with.

[] State (if domestic applicant): FL
[
] School Type: Public school that requires a 130 IQ for admission, top public/magnet school in state and high ranked in nation (I’m 2000% blessed my parents moved to this county when I was little…)

[
] Gender: Transgender male
[] Income Bracket: Below $10,000/year
[
] Assets: None
[] Property: None
[
] Extenuating Circumstances: I was in a wheelchair for 3 years in middle school. My dad died (suddenly of a brain aneurysm) when I was 14 right before I started 9th grade. Our house got foreclosed 2 years ago and I was homeless for a week. I’ve had to work jobs most of highschool to help my mom pay bills/rent or we would lose our new house. I can’t afford a car so I take the bus everywhere which is EXTREMELY bad where I live (I wrote about it in 500 word essay, take 40 minutes by bus to get somewhere 7 minutes away)

[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): First-gen (mom did one semester at LSU and dropped out, dad did none), transgender maybe?? don’t know if that qualifies[/li][/ul]

Why you think you were matched/not matched and general comments:
Honestly don’t know and can’t believe it. My test scores were pretty high and I’ve had some very unique life experiences (see 800 word essay). I worked really hard on the essays and all of them were my best work including the short answers. I haven’t like, cured cancer or anything haha, haven’t won Intel or anything like that. Just goes to show that it is possible to get into MIT for a person like me!

THIS IS TRUE! I posted my stats because I don’t have many extracurriculars and I haven’t been on a debate team for four years, or have 150+ hours doing community service at St. Jude! Mine is really realistic/relatable (maybe) and I even got a 1 on my AP Calculus exam!!! If you’re passionate, honest, and good at conveying your true self, you’ll be fine. If you’re a fit for a school, you will indeed get in!!

Grace & peace

[ b]Why you think you were matched/not matched and general comments:**

I was completely shocked and honored to be matched to UPenn - was not expecting to match at all. In fact I almost didn’t apply - on September 27th (the day the app was due) I was working to finish the application when I began to doubt my chances of being designated a finalist (I thought my SAT score/GPA were too low, that my ECs weren’t unique enough, that my essays weren’t good enough, etc.) decided not to apply, and let the deadline pass without submitting my application. A few days after the deadline passed Questbridge sent me an e-mail asking me if I wished to finish the application as I had almost completed it - I thought “Why not?” and finished the final essays and submitted the application. When I found out that I was a finalist I was stunned - but still thought that I had no chance of matching so I ended up not submitting the supplements to some of the schools that I thought I had no chance of getting into. A few days after the Questbridge (November 1st) deadline passed Penn sent me an e-mail saying that they would still consider my supplement if I submitted it within the next few days - I quickly wrote the supplement detailing why I thought Penn would be the perfect place for me to spend the next four years and submitted it. Now, I’m going to Penn.

The moral of the story is DO (clap) NOT (clap) DOUBT (clap) YOURSELF (clap). I thought that there was no way that any of the Questbridge partner schools would accept me so even if you think that you have no chance of matching for whatever reason you should still apply as Questbridge could change your life. I assure you that you have a unique story to tell and Questbridge looks at the whole picture when considering its applicants. Good luck to all future Questbridge applicants and to those who didn’t match I know that all of you will end up somewhere amazing so don’t worry - it’ll all work out in the end.

[
] Essays: I think my essay to Northwestern was quite good. I was able to talk about the opportunities the Chicago/Evanston area would provide for me to do research on the effects of pollutants in Lake Michigan. I want to study environmental science, and continue to study Oncology after undergraduate, so I figured the resources available through a big city, like Chicago, would help me to understand the environmental effects of water-and-air-bourne pollutants on cancer in large populations. I also wrote about the recreational potential that Northwestern and Chicago would provide, through the Division One athletics and world-class amenities of the big city. I would rate my essay as roughly a 8.5 or 9 out of 10.

[] Volunteer/Community service: I am an Eagle Scout, and, for my project, I collected approximately 2800 articles of Clothing for Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. I also do a lot of community service with my church, including mowing lawns, giving out food to the needy, and a clothing distribution in Atlanta on Christmas. G-Strong also has provided me with community service opportunities, as I have helped with a water drive for Flint Michigan, and dedicated a lot of time to that.
[
] Summer Activities: In the summer, I do summer league swim team and I work. I also participate in Boy Scouts over the summer by going to activities and camps. In addition, I participated in a “Summer Bridge Program” at my high school in the summers before my Freshman and Sophomore years.

I would rate my essay as roughly a 8.5 or 9 out of 10.
[
] Teacher Recommendations: I provided two teacher recommendations for the Questbridge application, and an additional one for the Northwestern Common Application. My teacher recommendations, I would assume were all solid. Probably 10 out of 10s on all of them. One came from my Language Arts/Social Studies teacher, who taught me for all 4 years in high school. We are really close and she has been an integral piece of my development as a person in high school. I also work quite hard in all of her classes and got a 5 in Lang, 4 in Lit, and 5 in Comparative Government under her direction. My second came from my Physics teacher. I had her my Junior Year and have her again this year, as a senior. She is like a mother figure, and is very protective of all of her students. She and I are on very good terms and I think it was a solid recommendation. My last recommendation came from my Social Studies teacher, who I had in my Sophomore and Junior year for APUSH and APWH, we are really tight as well, I even did twin day with him during homecoming week  I also performed well in his class and I think we developed a great rapport over the years.
[li] Counselor Rec: I am not really sure about my counselor recommendation, though I’m sure it was pretty standard. I am not very familiar with my counselor, and we don’t talk very much, but I think she took care of business. I can’t really quantitatively rate the recommendation, but I think it was just fine.[/li][/ul]

Why you think you were matched/not matched and general comments: I think my scores were quite good, but most other people have acceptable scores, so I don’t think that was the differentiator. I think that the circumstances that I come from and my teacher recommendations really put me over. I have great teachers, and we’re all really close, so I believe that helped a lot. I also believe that my essays really communicated my circumstances and the difficulties I have had to overcome, as well as my passion for what I care for and my dedication to service. I am super grateful for the opportunity I have been given, and I hope my info will help any other prospective Questbridge scholars along the way. Best of luck to all future Questies and those going through Regular Decision!
