Is anyone else applying?! I haven’t seen any prospective students posting
I am!
The threads for 2015 USC transfer students were pretty quiet compared to 2014. Heck, even the UCLA 2015 thread seemed like a ghost town at times compared to the 2014 UCLA thread. Anyway, I got into USC for Spring 2016 (and I’m never getting over how bummed I am about that lol), but I’ll be around to check in for any 2016 threads
Let’s hope the drop in activity on CC is also a drop in applicants/competition hehe!
@zettasyntax I would kill for your position!
I am as well!
I’m still debating on whether or not I should apply for Fall 2016 as a transfer. Do you think USC would honor completion of an AA degree for transfers? Cause that’s what I’m doing right now at my CC. But anyway, what are your guys’ stats and majors?!
@kesprxt what’s your major? They use their own guidelines that seem less demanding the UC and CSU requirements–they’re just guidelines, after all.
Communication major. I’m a non-traditional student with a terrible academic history that I’m working on improving. No honoring academic forgiveness/renewal kind of alarms me but they review case by case for each applicant so I’m gonna explain my ass off.
Same. I’m majoring in Communication Studies. And yeah, it does bother me how they don’t accept academic renewal cause then my GPA would go down to a 3.4 or 3.5. But I heard someone got in with a 3.2 GPA cause she explained her situation and how she improved and all. What do you mean though when you say you’re a “non-traditional” student?
@kesprxt Non-traditional means somebody that isn’t the typical student. For instance, somebody who took a gap year or anybody that took a long break in their education. Say they went to college for 1 year and are returning after several years. High school dropouts/people that got their GED are also considered non-traditional students. I only finished up to the 8th grade, got my GED, and then went to community college, so I’d be non-trad too
Yeah, I didn’t graduate high school and I’m older than most junior transfers.
@trojanwoman I wish you all the luck for getting into USC I’m a little older than most junior transfers as well. I love hearing about non-trad success stories.
@zettasyntax if I may be candid, I started lurking your ass on the boards after I read your most recent post :P. Thank you! It’s so hard to gauge with our “stats” but USC’s admissions seems to be less stringent.
Oh I get it, @zettasyntax. I also see that you got into USC for Spring 2016. What were your stats? And did you have any W’s?
@kesprxt First go around in 2014, I had a 4.0 and applied as undecided/Dornsife and computer science/games. I was rejected that year. This time, I had a 3.9 and I did wind up with one W in a math course. I applied for anthropology (with the intention to switch into linguistics) and sociology. I got in as a sociology major even though I had only one course for that major, so go figure? I’ve chatted with the linguistics counselor though and he tells me I’ll be able to switch into their new comp ling major without any issues since it’s all under Dornsife. Although I did get the W after submitting my application and USC didn’t seem to mind it after I sent in final transcripts. I hear that you can maybe have about 2 W’s max before they start to get iffy about you. Their admissions blog states that the best applicants have no W’s at all, but it appears that they won’t automatically reject you for having a couple
@zettasyntax did you have to submit your GED scores or just the certificate?
@trojanwoman I just had to submit my certificate. I actually didn’t have a copy on hand (I think I lost it at my CC when they asked to see it for financial aid purposes), so I sent in a copy from the GED Testing Service. My admissions counselor at USC said this was the preferred method to send in a GED, but that they just need to see the certificate, no scores
Cool, thanks. Are you taking the semester off or are you still going to CC jff?
@trojanwoman Yeah, I’m probably going to take the semester off. I’m not sure if I mentioned this, but I racked up so many units at my CC that they said I would have to foot the bill for any additional classes or else appeal to the financial aid office to cover the costs As much fun as it would be to take some random classes or more language, I don’t want to have to pay for them, haha. I’m currently trying to get a job or something or just do something fun since I really have nothing on my plate at the moment =\
That’s not a bad place to be! I’m jelly! Enjoy your last period of play time
I had a question regarding nontraditional students. I took the CHSPE this June and am now considered a HS graduate.
I emailed USC’s Viterbi School of Engineering (I’m either applying as a CompSci or a Compsci + Business Joint Major) and they said that that it would be sufficient. Also stating that if the admissions office required more that they would contact me.
My question is that would having no “actual” HS transcript hurt me? Especially since I’m attempting to apply as a one year transfer. I’ll have close to junior standing if I get into USC as a transfer student. (AP Credits)
Also to note my HS GPA was terrible and that’s why I decided to skip continuing to go that route.
Also since I’m a on year transfer student I don’t have any College GPA at the moment. That said, I expect to keep a 4.0 all of fall quarter while taking 5 classes. I’m taking 4 in the winter and also expect to keep a 4 or close.
I should mention that my main goal is to keep good grades and go two years. I wouldn’t be bummed if I didn’t get in because my transfer plan is for 2 years but it would be pretty nice to get in while being a one year transfer. My goal would be to get into a great CS school that emphasizes entrepreneurship because my goal is to start my own tech company with the CS knowledge I acquire.
Thoughts?
