@dr4g0ns when did you send your transcripts in?
Accepted to Computer Science, entry-level
Out of State student at 4 year public university
Previous major: Biology
GPA: 4.0
Few extracurriculars, mostly volunteering
2 solid LOR from old high school teachers
2 essays - 1 good, 1 average
Hours: 70 (some dual credit from high school, some from community college, most from current University)
Honestly, I don’t know how I got in. I took no math, engineering, or computer science related courses this year. I guess they really liked either the essays, the LORs, or the GPA. Maybe a combo of all three?
@tara2366 Congrats! Considering that you had Biology as your previous major, I think you definitely took Chem and Bio, or 2 competitive science tracks for admission. Did you take any Computer Science and Calculus courses in the past? If you did, then you’re a competitive applicant and those did factor into whether or not you’ll graduate on time at UT.
Those GPAs in science and math are good indicators of how well you’ll do in CS 312, 311, and 314 for the actual Computer Science major. Once again, congrats. Hope to see you there next Fall at 311 and 314 if I do get a spot in the courses
Gonna look for some opinions on here again. I know a lot of you guys are probably getting pretty tired of “chance me” posts, but honestly I am losing my mind over whether or not I will be accepted into McComb’s. I am in an EXTREMELY unique situation, so I am just looking for opinions, and anyone is welcome to voice their own!
After submitting my application, I found out that my Dual Credit grades from high school would factor into my admission decision. This was contradictory to what I had been told since high school, and I had planned my entire freshman year on this misinformation. Anyways, my UTT gpa is a 4.0, but my cumulative GPA will be around a 3.71 with an A, B, B, C in my Dual Credit classes, totaling 14 hours. This is the only downside however, as the rest of my application is EXTREMELY strong. See for yourself below.
Calculus 2: A+
Calculus 1: AP Credit
Microeconomics: A+
Macroeconomics: A+
Dual Credit GPA: 3.07 (Two English classes and two Biology classes from high school)
UT Tyler GPA: 4.0
Cumulative GPA: 3.71
Hours (by end of 2017 Spring semester): 45
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Resume: President of the Financial Management Association, one of the two business organizations on campus. We started the organization with 5 members, and when the year ended there were 20, many actively involved. I gave speeches to classes on why to join and educated them on Finance, and led the organization to community service. To be honest, I did nearly everything myself, since the other officers didn’t really care at all. Not trying to brag or sound condescending, but just being honest about how my resume was presented.
LOR: I have 7 letters of recommendation from 6/10 of my professors, and 1 from the tutoring center at the University who begged to write me one. 5 of them are pretty good, of course they wrote well about me but nothing way out of the ordinary. The other 2, which are my Calculus 2 professors and my History professors, were ASTOUNDINGLY good. My History professor said I was “the best student she had ever had in 30 years of teaching”, and my Calculus 2 professor (Went to an Ivy League) put some very similar material in his letter. Both my History and Calculus 2 professors talked about how I have a 4.0 GPA at UT Tyler, and make the argument that my Dual Credit grades shouldn’t determine my admission, which is fantastic since I didn’t get the write about it in my essays.
LOR from Speech teacher, said I was an excellent speech giver, natural leader, and mature compared to my peers.
LOR from head of Business Management at University, said I was a phenomenal student and attentive student who has done great things with the Financial Management Association.
LOR from Economics professor, never saw it, but I finished the class with a 115 and made perfect scores on two of his tests, so probably decent.
LOR from Stat 1 professor (took the class for fun), never saw it, but he really liked me and I made a perfect 100 in the class since there was no bonus, so probably good.
LOR from Calculus tutor at University, never saw it, but probably decent. I helped them tutor Cal 2 sometimes when they were busy and also had the most hours at the tutoring center out of everyone else in the University, so i’m sure he talked about those.
LOR from History professor, see above.
LOR from Calculus 2 professor, see above.
Essays: I consider myself a fantastic writer, so a 9/10 is safe to assume. Also, some of my friends who went to Boston College said my essays were extremely good. I drafted them about 6 times. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to write about my Dual Credit grades specifically because I recently found out that they were factored in.
As you can see, I am in a pretty interesting situation, and I am paranoid about my circumstance. I would like some completely honest opinions on my situation. Also, let me know if there is anything I can do for the thread. Thank you in advance!
@UTMccombs2017 What’s your major? And chance yourself this way:
- How many transferable core classes have you completed? Will you graduate on time? https://my.mccombs.utexas.edu/My/BBA/Advising/Degree-Planning/Degree-Plans look up your major degree plan here. https://admissions.utexas.edu/apply/transfer-resources/ate look up your transferable coursework here.
- That GPA factor from Dual Credits is definitely unfortunate but competitiveness in the Calc and Econ definitely helps. How likely, based on your GPA and taken courses specific to major, will you thrive in your major and graduate? Do your essays and resume agree with it? Demonstrated interest in Mccombs and how Mccombs will guide you to success in your essays? I'm not sure if LORs are important to this but do LORs agree with it as well?
All things should add up together to create a potential Mccombs applicant. I know the average external transfer GPA was a 3.92 last year and I don’t know about it this year, but it’s pretty high. Cumulative GPA might lower your chances but the main factor is whether or not you’ll graduate on time based on GPA and coursework. Of course, applicants with higher potential for success is considered over other applicants. At a glance, you have a great chance based on your competitive Calc and Econ GPA.
@Osaidmk1 I have 3.8 GPA and over 30 credit hours and I did some volunteer work and yea…
I think my essays were good as well. What about you?
I got my transcripts in pretty late. I think the last week of May, and then my app went into in review a couple of days later.
Anxiously anticipating my Mccombs/Economics(Alternate major) decision. I’m transferring from a California community college and UT is my last pending university. Due to California deadlines, I was required to accepted my admission to UC Berkeley for economics, but still seriously considering UT because my family is moving to Houston area next month. Should I drop Berkeley if Mccombs accepts me? If only econ for UT, should I keep my enrollment at Berkeley? What do you people think?
Denied from mccombs accepted to economics, 3.91 GPA 2 LOR
Does anyone know if some more Moody decisions will be released today or later this week?? Super anxious!
@ChaffeyChonor That decision is totally up to you and your family. Honestly, Berkeley is ranked higher and would be a lot cheaper because it’s in state, so you really need to think about which school and location you want to be in. I’m also from California and got into Berkeley, but I would pick UT because I really prefer the school and Austin even though it’s going to be way more expensive for me.
Question: Does anyone know the last day for them to release acceptances for this year? I know last year it was around June 15th… is it the same for this year?
@UTaustin69 Were you an out of state student? I went through your EC’s, GPA, and what not and you seem to be a qualified candidate.
@longhornhopeful1 it’s officially June 15th but they might go over a few days
Nope, in state and to be honest I thought I was going to be admitted as well, however, I am more than happy with economics since I will be pursuing a grad-level education.
Mccombs takes a good while, I hope to hear back this week. I still have yet to look at campus. So far A&M campus is amazing.
@ChaffeyChonor I would chose UC Berkley but it comes down to you
Admitted to first choice Civil Engineering!

I’ve been lurking this thread for awhile so though I’d just say I got accepted into Cockrell today for Computational Engineering at around 5pm. I can post my exact stats if anyone is interested.
Also, I might look around for a roommate if anyone wants still hasn’t signed their lease yet.
