2016 and beyond wedding moms and dads (Part 1)

Your son’s wedding sounds wonderful!! Congratulations. Now you deserve a rest.

It sounds fabulous, abasket. I’m glad it all went so well (even with the late rolls and barbecue sauce) and that they are off on their honeymoon.

My nephew had a pie bar too, my niece had a candy bar for wedding favors- (helped that her husband’s family wins a candy factory ) it all looked colorful in large variety of glass containers! And,the pies, also were pretty and fun!
Thanks, abasket

Sounds lovely! The setting sounds wonderful!! Would love to see photos if you would be willing to share via PM!

Thanks for the update, sounds like a beautiful and special weekend. You are making me have chair envy! Our venue has the ugliest chairs so we are going with chair covers, which bring up the cost, but the fancy chairs were an extra $600! I’d rather upgrade the liquor

Sounds beautiful, abasket. Congratulations.

Heck, I threw a baby shower and didn’t get responses. I wish I’d been just as rude and denied food and drink to the non responders. What can people be thinking???

May 2017. Venue only right now is secured. And it’s fabulous.

LOL, yes about thinking ahead to what might be “going on” that weekend. We were to go to Williamsburg for our honeymoon and never dreaming there’d be a problem. Well, it was William and Mary’s Homecoming weekend. Needless to say, we did not spend our wedding night, a Saturday, in Williamsburg.

Congratulations! Sounds like it was a fantastic wedding!

Congratulations abasket! Not withstanding the couple of moments of food misstep frenzy, it sounds like it was a joyous, lovely time.

I’m glad to see that you not only survived @abasket , but that a wonderful time was had by all! There’s always going to be some glitch, and if yours was missing rolls and barbecue sauce, hey, that’s pretty darn good!

Someone mentioned the possibility of smeared make-up. I generally wear blush and mascara and am lucky if I remember lipstick. However, my hair stylist mentioned “air-brushing” I thought that was what they did to pictures to remove imperfect skin, but apparently it’s something that a make-up person can apply that makes your skin look flawless and will not smear or melt. (I know, sounds sort of scary) She said it’s great when you have people kissing you a whole bunch and can make one look ten years younger. I found this article http://www.topweddingquestions.com/blog/using-airbrush-makeup-for-wedding/ that describes air brushing and how it can go wrong, and maybe an alternative: https://www.amazon.com/Model-Bottle-Original-Makeup-Setting/dp/B001707IQ6

Congratulations! This is an exciting time.

2015 wedding mom here… D and SIL had chiavari chairs delivered at their venue in the afternoon and picked up at the end of the night (venue rules!) and we joked during wedding planning that we were all crazy for doing this, but we were so glad we did. Everything was beautiful. I think the total cost for chairs was about $2000. Seems ridiculous, but the other chairs were SO ugly.

D, her bridesmaids, and I all had air brush make up. It was amazing! It looked natural, but made our skin look flawless. There was no smearing. Doing hair, make up, and getting dressed with D and her best friends made the start of a perfect day extra special.

Congratulations, abasket! Did you have it in the current train station or the one that is closed? It sounded wonderful!
I’m sure the BBQ tasted just fine without the buns and extra sauce.

@toledo, it’s the current one but the upper area that is no longer used for Amtrak purposes. (Is that what you mean by closed?)

We did end up with buns and sauce - just took forever to get it! Luckily I had some veggie appetizers and plenty of cold drinks including a delicious sangria that kept everyone happy!!!

Congratulations @abasket! As I just start out this process, it made me tear up to read about your wonderful day and realize that will be me next year. It all sounds wonderful!!

Just one more tip, for MOB’s whose daughters are still shopping for wedding dresses: be sure to figure out and budget the cost of alterations as well as the dress. DD is suffering sticker shock after learning that alterations on that lovely, multi-layers dress with all the lace are going to run to more than half again the cost of the dress itself.

@calmom This JUST happened to my D2!! She went for the fitting at the place recommended by BHLDN where she had bought a reasonably priced wedding dress (she also has a budget for every item for her wedding). She called me from the fitting in shock with the alteration fee! She didn’t know what to do as it was far more than realized (and honestly it sounded like a lot to me too). But I truly don’t know what it costs to alter a wedding dress (hemming, taking in the top) and the associated fittings. I realize it is more costly than every day type alterations. She wondered if she should go some place else but for all we know, this is a typical price for anyone who does this in NYC (not sure, but seems likely). She even thought about asking costumers she knows in her field (theater) who might be able to do it. Her time is VERY limited. Fitting in this appointment and the follow up is already very tricky. Yes, like with your D, the alterations are more than half the cost of the dress!!! We discussed it and I told her that there was money in her budget for it (her dress had cost less than budgeted) and there were some things they no longer were doing that they had budgeted for, such as renting a piano. So, the money was there for it, while keeping in the budget. We decided she should go ahead with it where she was at. But admittedly, we didn’t have an idea that this was going to be so costly until she went to do it.

We have been warned about alteration cost and that’s why we’re glad our daughter is getting married close to home, in PA, and not in Brooklyn, where she lives. There are several seamstresses around here that work out of their homes and I understand the costs are fairly reasonable. My daughter also got her dress at BHLDN, but at a sample sale. Cost - $300. If the alterations cost $200, it will still be a fairly good deal. Hopefully, she’ll get an appointment ASAP.

My D’s alterations cost a lot more than that @walkinghome !

PS, my D also lives in Brooklyn!
