***2016 National Merit Finalist Thread***

The walk to the mailbox has really started to become stressful. I would really just like to know the exact date that NM mailed the letters out…

An urban legend started on some of the NM threads last year that I’d like share with you. It involves a set of mythical workers at NMSC. We joked that they would watch the CC boards light up during these times and delighted in the ridiculous wait that everyone goes through for news, good or bad. All credit goes to @GoAskDad, who came up with the story, characters, and even worked on a great theme song that graced our threads. It is loosely based off of posters experiences with NMSC, with a great deal of exaggeration of course. Enjoy!

Can’t you just see it? Friday afternoon, the week’s winding down…

“Jim, did you bring the popcorn?”

“Yeah, it’s in the microwave, and Lisa brought some homemade guac and chips.”

“Great! I brought the soda and I’m pretty sure Derek made cookies. Tell him to get in here.”

“Fire up that Smartboard, Stan! I hope those crazy ‘CC Parents’ are whipped-up enough by now to make the afternoon fly by.”

“Somebody turn down the lights. It’s easier to read the board that way.”

“Wait, wait! Before we begin, I just want to congratulate Connie for coming up with that whole ‘Mailing the Letters in Waves’ thing this year. I mean, whether or not we actually DID that, it was brilliant to let everybody THINK we did!”

(Applause & Cheers)

“Agreed, Jim! And now, I nominate Stan to figure out what we’re gonna say to parents who call NEXT year. Stan, you have until December 1st to come up with something incredibly clever! That’ll give us enough time to incorporate your idea into staff training before the parent calls start in January 2016.”

"Wow, thank you, thank you. That’s a real honor. But they don’t call me ‘Smartie-Pants Stan’ for nothin’. I already know what we’re gonna say next year: Carrier Pigeons! Anybody who calls, we’re gonna tell them that rejection letters were sent by Carrier Pigeon…so if a bird lands on your mailbox with a letter, then you’ll know the whole “Free College Thing’ is a No-Go!”

(Wild Applause)

“Stan, that’s the BEST idea yet! It gets harder and harder to top this stuff each year.”

“Ummmm…excuse me. I don’t mean to ask an obvious question but…why don’t we just send everybody a notification email on the same day? I mean, that seems like a pretty reasonable approach to me.”

“WHO THE HECK LET AN INTERN IN HERE?! Jimmie, go back and cover the phones like we told you. This is a Staff-Only event. And remember, Carrier Pigeons are NEXT year. Anybody who calls today, we tell them WAVES. Letters in WAVES. Got it, Jimmie?!”

“Ummmm, OK. Got it. Sorry. I’ll go back to the answer the phones now.”

“Somebody close the door so we keep those blasted interns out of here. They spoil ALL the fun.”

“Hit the lights. Get the thread on the Smartboard, Stan.”

“I gotta say, these College Confidential Happy Hours sure do help break up the office monotony.”

@albert69 that is hilarious! Doesn’t sound so far-fetched, either. I wouldn’t be surprised if any NM employee lurked around these threads. They’re probably getting a chuckle out of our anxiety about these rejection letters.

BTW, tomorrow is Monday but the mail doesn’t come since its MLK Day–I wonder if that’s a good thing or a bad thing? Anyway, I’m still going to be checking the mail thoroughly every day until Feb 3. Still holding out hope, but don’t want to get my hopes up too much…

I’m in a pretty similar situation, Florida NMSF, 2 semester C’s for me. Sophomore algebra 2 honors and junior spanish 2 (don’t ask). I’m either going somewhere on an NMF scholarship or off to community college, so rooting pretty hard. Needless to say, though, if I manage to make it through, so will you.

I love the party scenario above – seems like it could apply to lots of situations involving colleges and the notifications they send out! I think it helps to try to have a sense of humor about it all, difficult to do in certain moments though.

@sirbedevere what’s your UW GPA? If it’s pretty high then you might be able to make it. I’ll be rooting for you too. Were you looking into going to UF/FSU/UCF on the Florida Incentive Scholarship?

Oh, and BTW, according to the NMF thread from last year, people posted that they received rejection letters on Tuesday, Jan. 20. That would correspond to Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2016. So the letters must be on route, but hopefully not to anybody on these boards.

@sirbedevere Don’t despair. Even if you are only a SF, there are a lot of schools that will probably give you significant financial aid. The good grades you probably have to even be in the hunt for Finalist should garner you a President’s scholarship at U of Alabama that would pay four years of tuition and some stipends, as well as first year room and board. Check out other places. You shouldn’t feel community college is the only alternative.

Re: Alabama Presidential Scholarship. it’s quite nice at four years of tuition but doe snot have first year room and board. National merit finalist kicks in additional dollars, a travel stipend, technology (iPad) and first year room and board honors housing. Alabama will kick in an additional 10k STEM scholarship if that’s your field. Pretty amazing actually and one of the best semifinalist scholarships for sure.

No letter in the mail today for me.

I got a letter today, unfortunately, even with a 3.8 GPA.

I am sorry you are not a finalist @lcgusa but, please remember what you accomplished by being a semi-finalist!
Good luck as you move forward.

@lcgusa I am so sorry that you received a letter…I had my fingers crossed for you! Hoping you have some good college options regardless of NM status (or that have good NMSF merit).

Just got mail in missouri. No letter. Hopeful. What was latest rejection letter last year? Did they come in first days or in waves. Maddening;)

Scared because I have one semester C+

Xcjunior, last year someone became finalist w 3 c semester grades. Each day without a letter is a good day

My letter was sent Wednesday the 13th and I got it down in Fl from IL, but maybe all the letters aren’t sent all at once?

Are they bulk or regular mail? Look like regular letter?

Mine came in the regular mail, in a standard envelope

Wow, I can’t believe that, seeing as I haven’t got one yet with my 3.2… Maybe cause I complained about being poor in my essay or something
