I have been doing research on artificial sweeteners since I was a freshman in HS, and I was able to compete and place at my State level science fair; I have always played regionally. I’m a leader in 7 different organizations. I volunteer at a hospital (400+ hours). I shadow physicians. I’m an AP Scholar with Distinction, and I won a book award from a top tier ivy league college (I don’t want to state the college for confidentiality). I started a mentorship program. I play piano, and was invited to perform at a concert my freshman year. I do a few other things too, but that would reveal my location/identity, so I prefer to not say anything.
I’m biracial, but I am not mixed with an underrepresented minority. I was also born in another country, and I lived outside the US for about a year.
Wow, hearing about all your extracurriculars really put me in my place. You sound like an amazing applicant! I am highly impressed and confident that you’ll be accepted to many prestigious institutions.
@markb2017 Thank you! I really appreciate it! I think you’re right about the race thing. I think that is what did it for me. I’m not too upset about the decision because I know my value. I was just really curious to see where I stand among those who were accepted. Once again congratulations to all those accepted!
@tagi1998 Lucky, I wanted admission to Discover Swarthmore more than I did Windows on Williams! I got waitlisted at Swarthmore and am hoping I get an open spot to go!
rejected with a 2380 SAT, 9/9 5s on past exams (AP World, APUSH, AP Euro, AP Compsci, AP Bio, AP Lang, AP Calc, AP Micro, AP Macro), 800s on sat subject tests in lit, WH, and math 2, a perfect psat score, and a perfect gpa. congrats to those who were accepted!
@collegeclassof21 20K is definitely in the range of qualifying for a fee waiver. That’s well below the poverty line nationwide. My family makes around 100K and I still got a few waiver and accepted into the program.
So, it looks like there are three different rejection letters sent out: 1) Terse and to the point. Not much encouragement for applying to Williams. 2) Lukewarm. We really think you should apply, but we are not willing to give you fee waivers or a phone call about your application, and 3) You are in the group of runners-up. Fee waivers, chat with admissions and please apply.
Almost impossible to tell what factors contributed to falling in the different categories without access to all the data. I am working with a student who was rejected by both Williams and Swarthmore. It will be interesting to see how she fares with other schools.
@azcpamom just from solely seeing the stats of those who were accepted and rejected in this thread, it does seem kind of random. I’m sure they had a certain basis for selecting participants but it seems quite arbitrary?
It really isnt a random admissions process. they are trying to recruit low income, minorities, or people from underrepresented areas of the US. They want kids who arent super educated about the college admissions process (indicated by income/ having parents with high levels of education) and need some extra guidance. If no one from your school has attended williams before, even that could be a factor.
