Decision: Matched

Match to: Amherst
Schools Ranked: Williams, Princeton, Bowdoin, Amherst, Carleton

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): 1500 (only took this for National Merit) 750 on each part.
ACT (breakdown): 35 Composite, 36 superscore
SAT II: 760 on Literature, 780 on US History
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): N/A
AP (place score in parenthesis): AP Human Geography (5), AP US History (5), AP English 11 (5)
IB (place score in parenthesis): N/A
Senior Year Course Load: 1st Semester- Senior Transition, Environmental Science, AP European History, AP Calc AB. 2nd Semester- Latin III, AP Calc AB, AP English 12, Gov/Econ
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Just National Merit Semifinalist, AP Scholar, and a bunch of highest average in the class awards.

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): National Honors Society (Vice President), Greene County Youth Leadership, Greene County Youth Council, Scholar’s Bowl (Team Captain), Hiking, and Nature Photography.
Job/Work Experience: Summer before junior year I worked as a youth worker for the US Forest Service.
Volunteer/Community service: 65ish hours total, mostly at a local ministry that’s kind of like a food bank.
Summer Activities: The job before junior year, and before senior year I went to a Tennessee Governor’s School.
Essays (rating 1-10, details): 1st Essay- Honestly, 10/10. I think it’s the best thing I’ve ever written, and I talked about Hiking, which is my absolute favorite thing to do and to which I devote at least 3 hours a week, and how what started as a childhood quest for adventure like the people in Lord of the Rings gave me a love for nature which inspired me to want to become an environmental lawyer. It sounds cheesy like that but I promise it isn’t lol
2nd Essay- 9/10, I think it could have been better written, but I basically talked about how I agonized over whether to come out as bisexual to people at my school given that I live in a very conservative area (East Tennessee), and how I ultimately decided to not let people’s prejudices dictate what I did and how I learned not to care what people thought.
SAs- 8/10, nothing special, but the things I said definitely tied into my love for the outdoors and stuff like that.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: 10/10, she let me read it and I almost cried. She was my AP English teacher (and before that she taught English at a nearby small liberal arts college) and she said things like "His writing would be impressive if he was one of my junior and senior English majors) and basically how I was incredibly intelligent and humble and that I got along well with everyone and what I joy I was to have in class. I couldn’t have asked for a better rec.
Teacher Rec #2: Maybe 9/10? She was my Honors Trig and Pre-Calc teacher and I did really well in her class and she really liked me. She was also incredibly honored that I asked her to write me a recommendation.
Counselor Rec: Probably 10/10, she loves me and she told me she was making it her mission to give me all the help she could to help me get into the schools I’m applying to (Princeton, Williams, Amherst, etc). The vast majority of people don’t get this kind of personal attention at my school because we have 3 counselors for about 800-1000 students. I’ve also been in her office a ton this year talking about college stuff with her, which has given her plenty of time to get to know me.
Additional Rec: N/A

Other:

Intended Major: N/A
State (if domestic applicant): Tennessee
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: $33,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): LGBTQ, My parents are divorced, my dad is a paranoid schizophrenic and can’t hold a job because of it so his income is zero, my mom is a lawyer with her own solo practice making ~33K a year and trying to raise 4 kids and herself with that money. We have negligible assets.

Why you think you were matched/not matched and general comments:

I’m honestly not sure what Amherst saw in me that at least 3 others didn’t. Maybe my essays spoke to the particular AOs really well there? I know that Amherst values geographic diversity, and I’m willing to bet they didn’t get many TN applicants? I know my stats definitely helped, and I think my essays and recs were great. Probably what hurt me with the others was lack of ECs, not many APs, and not being a URM. But regardless, I’m so incredibly overjoyed and thankful for getting matched to Amherst and I can’t wait to go there!!!

To all the people who didn’t get matched: This most definitely isn’t the end of the road, only the beginning of it. Getting admitted to top colleges like these is a crapshoot (I even got rejected from my first 3), and not getting matched with a full ride doesn’t necessarily say anything about your ability to get into these colleges ED or RD. I know you all will continue to do great things! <3

[
] Summer Activities: N/A, took care of my mom/she wouldn’t let me leave to go interview for internships anyway
[] Essays: Bio: 9/10, I wrote about my mentally ill/abusive mother and how I have to run the household and that I’ve learned patience and humor from my life (I found a good voice and tone but looking back on it there were choppy/pretentious parts… which is understandable because i turned in the essay at 2:04am september 28)
Intellectual Curiosity: 9/10, I wrote about my formative experiences in online fan groups and how I want to study the psychology/economics of fan/celebrity interactions (this was good because I got to convey how I’m interested in the intersections of many disciplines but i don’t know if it was compelling or insightful)
[
] Teacher Recommendations: 9/10, my APUSH/Econ teacher knows my family history the best out of everyone at my school and he’s really charismatic/smart. I’m good at essays but I was horrible at answering questions in class last year (I think he has a soft spot for me though)
8/10, my AP Spanish teacher also knows my situation well and she’s had me for two years/she’s an advisor for one of my clubs. I wasn’t sure about submitting two humanities recs but my school’s math/science departments are weak and those teachers didn’t really know me
[li] Counselor Rec: 7/10, she knows my situation well and seems kind but a lot of people complain about her ineptitude/I’m not sure about her voice in rec letters[/li][/ul]

[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): First gen college (in the US anyway)[/li][/ul]

Why you think you were matched/not matched and general comments: MY SAT score was the only thing carrying my application. I don’t have any awards, work experience/internships, or summer activities, and I’m not in a lot of clubs. I took a lot of risks with the tone of my essays but ultimately they were all over the place, and I might have underemphasized the hardships of my family situation. I think also having 2 Humanities recommenders when some of the fields I was interested in were STEM was a risky move. Ultimately, the Match is based on a lot of financial technicalities (my FAFSA was selected for verification but the estimated EFC was around $583 and I don’t think all my financial aid documents were received) and I prepared myself well for the fact that this doesn’t mean I’m a bad applicant or that these schools don’t want me! If you’re applying in 2018 and you’re worrying about not getting Matched, it’s definitely just the beginning for you and you already do have the Questbridge stamp of approval, so it’s essential to kick yourself into high gear and find people who will support you all the way to the bank!

Does anybody know how many Finalists were matched this year?

[ b]Match to:** Northwestern
[ b]Schools Ranked:** MIT, Stanford, NU, Princeton, Columbia, Yale, Caltech, Tufts

[ b]Objective:**
[ list]
[ *] ACT (Comp, Essay, Eng, Math, Read, Sci): N/a
[ *] SAT II (Type, Score): Superscore: (1550, 18, 770, 780)
[ *] Weighted GPA (out of ??): idk
[ *] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
[ *] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 14/780
[ *] AP (place score in parenthesis): 4 in everything except Calculus BC. Don’t remember them all, but I took ~8 AP tests
[ *] IB (place score in parenthesis): Currently in Diploma. Have not taken IB tests yet.
[ *] Senior Year Course Load: IB HL Math, Spanish, Lang, History. SL Science, Music
[ *] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): AP Awards, National Merit, Honor Roll
[ /list]

[ b]Subjective:**
[ list]
[ *] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Music is biggest. Made District/All-State all years. Georgia GHP Music
[ *] Job/Work Experience: none
[ *] Volunteer/Community service: Interact club where I recycled, volunteered, road cleanup. Scholars program which is a daily mentoring program at my school
[ *] Summer Activities: GHP Music. Band Camp. Recreational stuff
[ *] Essays: NU only had a Why Northwestern statement, but probably a 10/10. I probably spent 4 hours just reading up on the school because it was my first choice. Spent many hours during the week before to make the essay perfect. I think it was good because I really focused on specific things at Northwestern that interested me and the multiple ways that each one would benefit me in college.
[ *] Teacher Recommendations: Only submitted one, but I know it was a 10/10 even though I didn’t read it. She was a Freshman and Sophomore year math teacher. She was definitely the best teacher I have ever had, and on many occasions I would stay a bit later and just have some conversations with her. She was also kind of like a counselor because my school was too big for people to be able to get regular counselor meetings. We often talked about school, activities, and college.
[ *] Counselor Rec: Don’t know. The only interaction I had with my counselor was asking her to write me a recommendation.
[ /list]

[ b]Other**
[ list]
[ *] State (if domestic applicant): Georgia
[ *] School Type: Public
[ *] Ethnicity: Asian
[ *] Gender: Male
[ *] Income Bracket: <50000
[ *] Assets: None
[ *] Property: The house I live in?
[ *] Extenuating Circumstances: Honestly, I don’t have many extenuating circumstances. Although my family is low-income, my parents were very good at money management, so I lived in a pretty decent neighborhood and got most of the things I wanted. I guess what separated me from richer families was that I always had to think about my family’s finances whenever I bought anything.
[ *] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Probably top 10 high school saxophone player in Georgia. First-gen immigrant.
[ /list]

[ b]Why you think you were matched/not matched and general comments:**
Honestly, my story is not nearly as interesting as many others here. My family’s low income hasn’t made my life significantly more stressful or unpleasant. However, I think that had more to with mindset than anything else. I was just thankful for what I had I guess.
Otherwise, I think it was mostly my academics and essay. I didn’t try before high school, but once I got to high school, I worked my ass off on everything.

I just spent 25 minutes typing it up, and it seems like it didn’t post and deleted itself…
Therefore, shortened version:
Matched to Northwestern
1550 SAT. 770 Math2. 720 Physics
EC: Mainly music. I got a lot of awards for that. Not many other meaningful ECs.
Essay: 9/10. Put in a lot of time researching and writing.
Rec: 10/10 I think, but I never read it. This teacher was my favorite teacher of all time, and I’d say we were good friends by the end of my sophomore year.

Why you think you were matched/not matched and general comments
I think my EFC was just a tad high… My NCP is earning a lot of money even tho he’s not gonna contribute, and I have about 3000 savings from my work, and the asset is just… even tho we’re not making that much money it’s still too much.
But I don’t know. I felt like I could make it, but I didn’t. So congrats to those who did, I might just go to a state school now.

its okay
theres always QB regular decision right?
and didnt they say that the RD is where most QB finalists are accepted?
Dont be so discouraged

Extenuating Circumstances: idk but my dad had brain tumor a while back when I was maybe 10 and my single mother works part time for 4 people in the household so
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): 1st gen

Why you think you were matched/not matched and general comments:
honestly after looking at everyone else’s maybe its the SAT II’s or the AP’s and stuff. The only thing i think helping my app was my SAT score which wasnt even that high compared to many other people and plus I go to a boarding school and so we literally dont get to get any long-time experience whatsoever and so i didn’t have any job experience. Then there was awards and maybe that was considered into the decision too.
But its okay i try to look at everything from the positive side so maybe I’ll get it during the QB RD’s.
Good luck to everyone else!

@leo2001 can we be friends i love your mindset

Why you think you were matched/not matched and general comments: Weak GPA, even though I only have a 3.6 because of freshman year. Didn’t take subject tests. Don’t know my teachers well. No major awards. Plus, I’m a white male with no hooks other than first-gen. Congrats to those who matched!

If you got matched, congrats. If not, don’t worry – to have been selected as a QB finalist is a sure sign you’re amazing and will have great options.

I second @gardenstategal’s motion. Each of my finalist friends who didn’t match ended up at a top 50 college through RD. Don’t be discouraged at all. You were chosen as a finalist for a reason.
