2017 - 2018 USC Transfer

also @pomeranian4rich THANK YOU!!! I asked about that thread the day people began posting about their admission decisions but no one replied to me lol

Also, @ anyone who’s been recently admitted or simply knows the answer to this question, do financial aid packages come with the admission decision package or is that something later mailed separately or only shown on the portal? If financial aid packages are released later, does anyone know how long they take to be available?

@pianorite You don’t get your financial aid info with your admission package. It usually shows up on the portal 1-2 weeks after you’ve been accepted. They’re usually pretty fast, so usually with 3-5 days for most if everything is in order.

Also, the director of orientation, Lisa Starr, also claims to be from SMC. She asked about SMC during my orientation and a lot of hands did go up. Since so many of their students want to go to UCLA or USC, I would also figure that they have a strong transfer relationship

So just went to USC springfest concert with migos and Rae Stremmurd and it got shut down. Not a great first impression USC made to me LOL

@itslife123 lool I was there too, sucks that happened. Pre gamed for nothing…

lol what actually happened, i heard it was because of a fire hazard?

@BigBoyGalaxy Hi! I will probably go to SMC and transfer to USC Dornsife. Can you tell me if it is hard to transfer to Dornsife from SMC? Also what major did you apply to because I was thinking about International Relations. Do you think that would be hard? Sorry for all the questions I just really want to get in

Is Viterbi harder to be accepted as a transfer student than Dornsife?

@pomeranian4rich Quick question. Do you think transferring to Dornsife usc from Santa Monica College would be difficult? (As a international relations major) Because I really want to get in. or do you think viterbi computer science would be easier?

@CC2080 lol calm down, the best way to ensure a successful transfer is to submit ur app with a 4.00 or as close to as possible. Second, make sure you are taking all USC-transferable courses and complete at least 6/8 GEs by end of spring. USC does a good job of listing them out exactly and even shows the course equavalency so it’s really easy. Lastly, have a SPECIFIC essay. Meaning not only talking about ur passions but specifically why you wanna attend USC. As for the easiness of transferring, unless you are TTP going to one specific cc or college doesn’t ensure a “easier” transfer. To answer the viterbi question, USC state’s that the acceptance rate is exactly same as it would be for dornsife (says so on viterbi faq). The pre req classes are just more diffcult.

:frowning: so the second C was earned in winter quarter this year after I applied for transfer, would they look at those grades if they haven’t requested? Also both quarters that I took calculus, I was taking five classes with more than 20 units and I received all A’s in my precalculus classes and statistics, as well as all A’s in the two financial accounting classes I’ve completed. Would that help my chances any? At the time I applied, my overall gpa was a 3.82. Also when did the decisions for people who already got an answer come out?

@stressedtoimpress they’re going to request your grades specifically so that they can see what you got in calculus, since it’s the math requirement for Marshall

Guys I’ve learned quickly that going to smc ( I stressed myself to do that but decided to go to OCC which is closer to home) or not doesn’t really matter! You can go to any cc and get into USC just like the smc kids! You just need to work hard for the 4.0, do some ec’s, work on making great connections with your professors and start working with a transfer counselor from day one! Also join your schools Ptk and honors program. Challenge yourself and take honors courses and best of all JUST KEEP UP WITH A HIGH GPA. However don’t fry yourselves out. I did this fall and dropped from a 3.83 to a 3.69 because I got B’s in all the classes I took because I tried to balance it with a job, two internships, honors courses and being involved with the school for ec’s. I thought I really needed to do this for ucla specifically but realized I didn’t and I screwed my GPA for no reason. Ultimately with the winter session I brought it up to 3.73 but that’s nothing like getting all A’s and having close to 3.9 before. Just try your best remember GPA is end game and again DONT FRY YOUR BRAIN AND SOUL OUT. I learned that doing all that shit wasn’t necessary but I don’t regret it cause I had more to talk about in my essays so I guess it was a learning process.

@CC2080 Viterbi CS is definitely not easier. Viterbi CS is one of the most impacted majors, plus the prereqs for Viterbi is COMPLETELY different for Dornsife. So if you’re going into Viterbi, make sure you know you can do well in Math, Physics, and CS. Cuz if you’re gonna get C’s in Calc I wouldnt think Viterbi is for you. And to answer your question, Viterbi is harder to get into Dornsife.

I’m a bit worried by the fact that I haven’t received an SGR, especially since my grades were less than stellar my first semester. Is this usually a sign that I’ll be rejected?

@CC2080 I don’t know a ton about the CS program, but I know enough to know that it’s probably the most or one of the most difficult programs that USC has to offer, and Viterbi is VERY selective. Some people say that no one school is harder to get into than another, but I strongly disagree because I’ve seen some very (what seemed to be) deserving applicants get rejected by Viterbi. As @itslife123 said, the prereqs are insanely math heavy, and international Relations would most certainly be easier to apply for because the prereqs are less rigorous, and there are less prereqs in general. To get into CS, and do well in CS, there are two things you would need to make sure of (IMO). 1. You need to be good, if not very good at math, unless you’re hardworking enough to get past those courses with A’s and B’s despite a lack of understanding, and 2. You need to really be sure that you’re interested and passionate about that field, because if you’re not, the classes will be absolute HELL. Once upon a time (a few months ago) I was considering switching my major from Business Administration to CSBA (CS and Bus. Admin) but I realized that even though I think I’d be fine with the math, I’m just not interested in CS enough to put myself through that. Point is, if you’re passionate about CS and can handle the math, go for Viterbi, but if not, I strongly suggest anything else.

@ReallyDoubtful hardly anyone has heard anything yet… the only people we know of (meaning this CC thread) that were accepted were all TTP applicants, and surprisingly two non-TTP sophomore applicants. One person has received an SGR, but other than that, none of us have been notified of any sort of decision. Keep in mind that some people don’t receive an SGR till the end of May, considering the deadline to receive a decision or SGR is June 1st.

@penntousc Yeah, I actually overheard a tour guide say “All that stuff you hear about one school being harder to get into is nonsense” Although, he followed it up with “Sure, some schools have slightly different requirements and standards that aren’t made public, but they’re generally the same”. So it sounded like he was saying they all have similar odds, then sorta backtracked on it :stuck_out_tongue: I usually eavesdrop on the tours and that was the first time I heard that one.

And @CC2080, I think CS at USC is quite difficult. I took several programming courses in CC and had aced them. However, I had to take the intro to C++ at USC and I wound up with a C+. I thought I would do a lot better considering I had A- on the first midterm, but I did bomb the programming midterm and one assignment. The other intro class was quite pleasant. However, if I was trying to declare the CS major, I would have likely been rejected since that C+ meant I didn’t maintain a B average. A lot of the CS kids are so impressive. One guy in the intro class had a music app up on the iTunes App Store already. It helps to pray for dumb classmates so the curve isn’t set to some insane standard :stuck_out_tongue: Although, I remember the class average on the midterm for a class I took in the summer was 50%, so that sorta tells you how brutal the exams can be. I am taking an upper div CS course right now and I’m getting near perfect grades on all the assignments, so it can depend on the class too apparently.

@zettasyntax yeah, and I guess in a sense they’re right, but in that case it all depends on the student. Some are more capable than others, so that’s where it would be considered more difficult.

@Skepta Thank you a lot and sorry if this sounds stupid but what is TTP?
