2017 - 2018 USC Transfer

Looking at the classes offered by my community college so that I can plan out fall 17 if I’m rejected, figured I’d take accounting, econ, and the rest of the GEs… my community college has 3 campuses, the northern satellite being 10min away, the main campus being 45min away, the southern satellite being 75min away… and they offer literally NOTHING at the campus that’s closest to me. I have looked up every class offered by my community college that would fulfill ANY of my remaining GE requirements, and the only place that any of them are offered (if offered at all) is the main campus, which is a 45min commute. On top of that, even macroeconomics is only offered in ONE section at the campus closest to me, which is currently waitlisted lol. I can’t even find a basic C++ course at this school, the only straight up C++ course is related to gaming and has prerequisites (thought learning to code could be useful knowledge for the future). I already do the 45min commute MWF this semester, so the last thing I want is to have another year of it… safe to say I really need to get in THIS year, otherwise my community college is going to drive me batsh*t crazy with registration and commuting…

If you do get the SGR does it come by email or do you have to check through the portal?

Has anyone heard a story of an applicant (or know a person who applied to USC) with a GPA under the average accepted of 3.7 and got accepted?

Like for example, people with 3.5-3.65 GPAs

Thanks!

@timdvo a lot of applicants have been accepted with a GPA similar to that, what’s important is making sure you have good grades (A’s and B+/B’s) in your major related courses and GE requirements, and also making sure that you complete the right courses.

@timdvo lots of people actually have been accepted as spring admit under 3.7gpa. Most of the time those with low gpa will have to wait till Mid-July because usc are waiting for other applicants with 3.7+gpa to submit their intent to register.

@timdvo

My sister did and she got in as a fall admit she had bet a 3.2 & 3.5 I don’t remember, except it was not over a 3.5. I don’t know when she heard except it was after she made the deposit to ucsb that’s all I know

@penntousc @pomeranian4rich Thanks for your response!

@pomeranian4rich : I had no idea that transfer applicants are also offered spring admission. I thought that was only reserved for first-year applicants! Other than that, I was wondering, from your personal opinion, what would be some reasons a transfer applicant would receive spring admission vs fall admission? Is it maybe because USC really, really likes the applicant to the extent where they offered the applicant admission, but didn’t have room for them in the fall? Or is it just because they had a GPA that was a tad short under the 3.7? Thanks!

@5nonnegotiables Thanks for the reply! If you don’t mind me asking, did your sister apply as recent as last year? Also, what was her exact GPA applying? Thanks!

@timdvo
She transferred in in 2014 & is getting her masters there now. She actually only had a 3.2 because she tagged ucsb and just made the gpa cutoff. She also had two 1-2 W’s, not a legacy or minority and nothing really extra. Middle class white in state. She said she found out mid June.

@timdvo reasons applicants are delegated to the spring semester include having a low amount of credits (between 30-45, though there are sophomore applicants that are accepted for fall as well), lower GPA (below a 3.7), missing some GE classes, or something as simple as a bunch of the admitted transfers sending their intent to register, resulting in USC filling up for the fall.

@5nonnegotiables @penntousc Thanks for the reply!

@penntousc would you say that sophomore applicants primarily get accepted as spring admits given their status in the applicant pool? (and only a handful of sophomore applicants get fall admission)

Alongside that, spring admission pretty much means that the applicant is “guaranteed a spot” for the spring semester at USC…so would that mean that the time in between could be used to study abroad, continue racking up units at a CC, or even do nothing?

@timdvo based on last year thread most applicants at sophomore standing are admitted for spring while some were admitted for fall depending on the number of units, the number of completed major prereqs and GEs they have.

@timdvo I’d say more than a handful are accepted for fall, but it seems the majority of sophomore applicants that are accepted are spring admits. And yes, USC doesn’t require that the fall semester be utilized in any specific way, but most spring admits attend a CC for the fall so that they can fulfill more requirements before attending in the spring, to make sure that they can graduate by the end of their first 4 years. Some applicants take the semester off (ex: @zettasyntax ) but that was because there were really no more classes he could take.

does anyone know the process of transferring between schools in USC? I know that it’s near impossible with SCA, but what about the other schools? Not interested in doing it personally, but I’m just curious.

@usc2563 from what I’ve heard it’s pretty easy, don’t know anything about SCA but I’ve heard of people transferring into Marshall and Annenberg with ease. Not sure about Viterbi because I haven’t heard of people transferring in too often (and because of the difficulty of getting in to begin with), but I’ve heard it’s easy elsewhere.

So some non TTP transfers from Dornsife? I’m Dornsife and have heard nothing. Not even a SGR :open_mouth:

@zettasyntax ok thats good to hear cuz my friend who transferred last year told me that even though i have all As that one C basically cemented my rejection, cuz its USC. lol was about to give up and just look forward to next year.

@Skepta with all due respect to your friend, dude has no clue what he’s talking about lol

@usc2563 Yeah, I’ve heard of people switching from Dornsife to Annenberg like nothing. I’ve pretty much never heard of anyone switching into SCA given the nature of the school. At least people have a chance of switching to Viterbi (although it’s not really a cakewalk by any means unless you’re some kind of whiz kid lol) :stuck_out_tongue:

@timdvo Yeah, I actually had so many units that my CC said if I was going to keep taking classes, I’d have to start paying for them :stuck_out_tongue: The only thing I could have possibly taken was the last GE-ish type thing (a third semester of a foreign language), but I thought it was a bit silly to pay out of pocket for just one course. This is why I never liked the idea of spring admission for transfer applicants (I sure have a lot to say on the matter hehe). But yeah, there’s really nothing set in stone as to what you’re supposed to do if you’re offered spring admission.

@penntousc lol yea i was like, “are you sure?” and he just said that hes not sugarocating it. I was still skeptical about it tho.
