@1livelaughlove next Friday UCLA will release decisions
Does USC admit by major or school?
Should Fall 2017 Junior applicants be expecting SGR’s anytime soon if any at all?
@TST974 If you have business calc in-progress, you’re likely to get an SGR even though you have a strong GPA. If you do wind up with an A though, your chances should be pretty solid if you completed a fair amount of GEs as well.
@squirtlesquirtle I remember getting my SGR a few years ago and that was around April 20-ish. Maybe things are going faster this year though.
@zettasyntax hey! You are an angel for these threads)))))I remember you from the last year, you have helped so many people! I need your opinion. I have finished all the prerequisite courses last Fall 2016, I have almost all GE. By the end of this semester I will complete the GE requirements. Why would they request my winter grades if I have completed what they need already? Any ideas? I wanted to graduate from community college, but then I changed my mind. During the winter I took Calc III, and I dropped it, so I got a W. Will this W for the course USC does not require hurt my chances?
And btw, I am applying to Marshall, 3.9 GPA
Are the regional counrselors the ones that make decisions regarding your application? Or is it the admissions staff in the specific school you applied to (Marshall, Dornsife, etc.)?
@zettasyntax Thanks for your insight. I believe I have 4-5 GE’s completed depending on if one will transfer. I got into one of my fallback schools so I was trying to get opinions on my USC chances because I’d have to make a deposit soon for the school.
@zettasyntax Thanks for your reply. It’s good to know to be expecting something in the mail soon.
To any other members that may have insight:
After calculating my GE’s completed- I’m not sure how this may affect my chances anymore. I’ve followed IGETC requirements and heavily focused on fulfilling IGETC. Upon calculating USC transfer articulation with Marshall, turns out I’ve only completed 4 of 6 USC GE’s with 2 GE’s not offered at my community college campus.
[Relevant Stats]
Major Prep: 1 more class in the spring of 2017.
GPA: 3.759 (Fall Grades Included)
Units: 69 Semester units by the end of spring 2017.
[Math]
Statistics (A)
Calculus 1 (A)
[Business]
Financial Accounting (A)
Managerial Accounting (In Progress for Spring 17’)- Expecting an A
Business Law (A)
With this information in mind, what are chances looking like now knowing I only have 4 of 6 GE’s completed with 2 GE’s not being offered at my community college campus? Has students ever gotten in with less than 6 GE’s completed?
Hey all! USC just emailed me saying they need an official copy
Of my hs transcripts. Why do you think they need them again?
@Panitaispretty hs transcripts are required for everyone applying. They need proof that you graduated
@masechka1988 Hi, I remember you too! I was so bummed when you didn’t get accepted
From what I recall, I believe you had a lot on your plate and weren’t attending CC full-time right? (or at least I think you had that year, but not before; my memory is a little fuzzy). Anyway, if that was the case, maybe USC just wanted to make sure you were doing well with another year of full-time attendance even though you had completed their requirements. That’s the only thing that I can come up with. I don’t believe one W in a class that isn’t really important for your major will matter. Sure, USC doesn’t like Ws, but one won’t significantly bring down your chances. I remember somebody that had 3 W’s and still got accepted to Viterbi (the school that people seem to consider the most selective)
I think you’ll be fine (especially with your GPA)
I had a W as well.
@delzzz321 I don’t think anybody really knows for sure. I would think that staff/faculty from your specific school/major would mainly be for graduate applicants. I recall eavesdropping on one professor and the advisor for my major chatting about a student that wasn’t going to accept their PhD offer and the advisor said something like “we don’t have to fill that sixth slot and we shouldn’t just have a weaker applicant take their place”. It sounded to me like they were pretty involved in the decision making. And if they only take on 6 students, that crushed my ideas of applying for the graduate program, haha
I have no idea about undergraduates though. I would assume your regional counselor and perhaps other counselors are mostly responsible.
@TST974 Your chances are about as solid as they can get, but you may just be in for a very long wait due to that business calc course being in-progress. I would recommend making the deposit if it’s doable because while I think your chances are quite good, USC makes some decisions that I don’t agree with/nothing is ever 100% guaranteed, so it’s always good to have a backup lined up. I know that I committed to UCLA only to finally hear something about USC 5 days later on June 6th.
@squirtlesquirtle Heck, I remember somebody that got into Marshall with 2 GEs completed
I believe he had been following IGETC and there wasn’t as much overlap as he might have wanted. Not sure if the link will work, but if it doesn’t check out the 2014 usc transfer decisions thread, page 7, post 101. I believe he was a non-trad student and it was 3 years ago, but with cases like his, it makes me wonder what factors can overshadow minimal GE completion. He also gotten in super late (July 9th), but accepted for the fall semester as well. I was really happy about his story turned out ![]()

@zettasyntax yeah, you have a good memory))))that was exactly what happened. But last year, I had all semesters full time, and I got A’s in all my classes. Unfortunately, this is not the only W I have.
@masechka1988 Do you have more than 3? I think if that guy got into Viterbi with 3 W’s, maybe that’s around the amount they will tolerate. I think it mainly concerns them if you’re dropping out of a course every semester because then it becomes a pattern. If it was one semester where you had to withdraw from all classes entirely, I believe that’s understandable. USC even offers tuition refund insurance for instances where you have to just drop all of your classes due to a medical emergency or something, so I would hope they’re willing to understand if you were in a similar situation and had to drop several classes.
@zettasyntax @masechka1988 the fact that you just recently dropped calc 3 in the winter will be concerning when usc are looking at your application. Even though calc 3 isn’t a prereq for marshall, dropping the class will definitely show that you aren’t prepared to handle college course load or life happens and you had no choice but to drop the class. I remember you said you have 6 W’s? It would be fine if the 6 W’s you had were a couple years ago and the past few semesters you’ve been a full-time student, 4.0 each semester and no W’s then USC will ignore the 6 W’s you’ve accumulated. I don’t know if they treat non-trad differently from trad students but we are all competing against each other who have strong stats, so I wish you the best! I think you’re a strong applicant but the recent W’s might be a red flag to the usc admission committee. The best I think you would get is a spring admit! (I would def. take that anyday)
@pomeranian4rich I don’t really understand the whole spring admit thing because I figure that they would only defer low GPA students as to not damage their 3.7 admitted GPA and I don’t think she would necessarily be doing that with such a high GPA. The fact that dmdwelle got in for fall with almost no GEs completed makes me think that there’s really no way to predict who gets spring admission and pretty much throws a wrench into the whole idea that more GEs = better chance of acceptance. Heck, he was even completing business calc in the spring, so I would think that would have been reason for him to be a spring admit and he was even surprised to get in for fall so late in the game.
Is it possible to get in if you’re missing one or two of the courses on USC’s cc transfer agreement?
I followed the UC IGETC…
@zettasyntax Thanks again. I may just deposit to be safe. Do you have any insight on typical scholarship/other financial aid transfer students typically get? It obviously may be case-by-case, however.
@lexluther96 See the last page for a link to the 2014 stats
There was a case of somebody with only 1 GE + the diversity requirement getting into USC/Marshall. I don’t know if admissions is more strict these days, but definitely possible.
@TST974 For USC? Students with an EFC of 0000 typically get most of their tuition covered and have to pay around 16K per year if they intend to live on-campus. If not, that amount can go down because they estimate housing to be around 6K per semester. I also believe they factor in student insurance into that cost, so if you have you own medical insurance (I didn’t), that amount can go even lower. USC has been pretty generous (their university grant for me is something like 20K per semester!), but it is seemingly impossible for them to cover housing (I tried)
They do promise to meet needs, but that usually means with loans such as the Parent PLUS loan, in which your parents can borrow whatever isn’t covered by USC’s gift aid.
Hey guys, do you know can I be a part-time student the last quarter(Spring 2017) simply because I don’t wanna take many classes? I’m in a quarter system CC, and USC just asked for my Winter quarter grades, which I’ve sent out already.
@Kevinzzz Hmm, you can try asking your counselor. I do think they like to see full-time status for 2 years though. I do recall a case of a cool Hawaiian student being part-time (possibly even taking no classes) the spring before he intended to transfer and he got into USC! He was pretty nervous from what I can recall, because yeah, I don’t think they particularly like you to take it easy right before transferring
Emailing your counselor and getting their opinion would be your best bet. If you have a good reason (such as no more requirements for you to meet), they might not have problems. If there’s anything you’re missing though, I don’t know how they would feel about you simply wanting a lighter course load.
