@cjm1996 I know that a lot of people say extra curricular’s don’t matter for transfer students. I’m not sure if this is true, but when it comes to PR majors, internships always look really GOOD. Personally, I would focus on talking those up in my essay and then briefly describing why your GPA is lower. No one likes a debbie downer! Fun fact, I’m trying to transfer from UW-Eau Claire for PR. Good luck!!
If the same exact course (for example principles of microeconomics) is 4 credits at USC and 3 credits at my university, does USC consider the class as 3 or 4 credits for purposes of getting over the 30 credit minimum to make high school irrelevant? I’m gonna have 28 credits and kinda worried. Although on the brochure it does say the will take high school mainly into consideration “or do a spring grade request”.
@USofAwesome I’m pretty sure they don’t adjust the number of credits, so I would suggest picking up another course for the spring, if you don’t want USC to consider your high school records and test scores.
@penntousc Financially I cant unfortunately… I guess Im just gonna hold out hope that having 7 GEs along with all prereqs completed might help. The “if you have earned fewer than 30 transferable semester units, we will base our decision either primarily on your high school record and SAT or ACT scores, or wait to receive your spring-term grades” line does give me a little bit of hope
@penntousc try searching that up on reddit in the usc section. I’ve read lots of stuff about the dual degree in cs and business.
@pomeranian4rich will do, thanks!
Does anyone know if I can submit my transcripts first before I submit my application? I’m still working on my essays for the application, and I know that transcripts take a while to process. Want to submit my transcripts now to be sure everything is turned in by Feb 1.
@ashurikko From what is remember, My friend who applied last year turned transcripts i after February 1st. And I’ve read as well u can submit transcripts after February 1st. If you’re taking winter u might have to submit again. Also if you’re worried, I’d call admissions.
Guys Fall Grades came up for me and I will be applying with a 4.0 gpa. Hopefully I get into Viterbi!! @penntousc I’m applying to CSBA this semester, and it is definitely a great major. But for someone who initially plans on majoring in Business, there are definitely additional classes you have to take for CSBA. I figure this year will be very competitive, but let’s hope for the best! Will be back on this thread once I finish my essays
@itslife123 I’m actually the person you replied to on Reddit as well haha, and yes I think I’ll have the grades it’s just a matter of deciding between BUAD and CSBA for me. Best of luck!
@penntousc btw if you typed in csba in the search box in the usc section you’ll find lots of previous threads about it. (I was once interested in csba but I’m not too fondly interested in technology.)
@itslife123 I dont wanna scare you but I recalled a viterbi applicant from last year with a 4.0gpa junior standing/finished all prereqs and was rejected for CS. I was a bit surprised but perhaps their essay was really bad? just a heads up for you haha
@pomeranian4rich yeah I saw a lot of stuff about it, looks like a good program for me and the math ends at calc 2 (which I’m doing this semester) so that’s definitely a plus. Only thing I’m worried about is struggling to get business related jobs with that degree, but if what people have said on Reddit is true, than that shouldn’t be a problem
@penntousc Calc 2 isn’t the last math class you have to take. There still is Differential Equations and Linear Algebra. And @pomeranian4rich there could be many factors, perhaps a bad essay, but as in finished all prereqs do you mean Math beyond Calc 2 and the 2 physical Lab sciences? I also hear 3.6 students at my CC getting into CS at USC so there are many factors, however, you can’t do any better than a 4.0 so I guess that’s the best I could do. So here’s hoping for the best!
@itslife123 I meant in the line of calculus, I don’t mind moving to different math classes
@itslife123 probably that is the case. maybe that applicant didnt take math beyond calc 2 so “finished all prerequisite” was a bit vague when he said it.
Hi guys I’m looking to apply as a sophomore at USC in 2017-18. I went to a private HS and I had a 3.25 GPA and 1870 on the SAT and 28 on the ACT. Clearly I would not get into USC as a senior but I go to the University of San Francisco and I will either have a 3.83 or 3.93 GPA in my first semester.
My classes were:
Written & Oral Communication part 1 (A)
Independent Film (A)
Elementary Stats (A)
African-American History (B+ or A-)
An admissions counselor told they put more focus on my college grades and care more about my drastic improvement in grades from HS to college. I’m applying as a History major to the Dornslife College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences. What do you guys think of my chances to get in as sophomore based on my grades and current courses I’m taking?
My next semester courses:
Written & Oral Communication part 2
Creative Writing for Non-Majors
Environmental Ethics
Spanish 1
@ejsutton2006 I think you will have a solid chance given your strong grades in fall semester. If you have over 30 transferrable units at the end of spring, they will not take your gpa,sat or act into consideration. (They might look at high school grades. Could be good or bad) How many GEs have you completed? Since you’re a sophomore it’s best that you complete most if not all GE courses before transferring because that’s what they want. If you can handle it, I suggest not taking spanish one (I don’t know if a foreign language is required for your major) and take two GE courses for USC. This will show them that you’re completing their GE requirements so that you can focus on core major classes once you transfer.
@pomeranian4rich I’m sorry, I’m currently a freshman applying at the sophomore level. I did some research and it’s difficult to tell which of my courses will count for GE credit, but I know most of my courses will be transferable. So far as I can tell, only my Stats course will FOR SURE count for GE credit.
@ejsutton2006 look at usc ge sheet and they will have a list of examples of acceptable courses. Find similar classes that matches those acceptable courses. that’s the only way I can help you find transferable ge courses. And I dont know if creative writing counts toward your major prerequisite or GE requirements. I suggest you to focus on taking GE courses. The admission will probably think you’re not consistent with your classes if you take random classes that don’t articulate with their major or GE requirements and ultimately will reject you for that. I think that was the case for me last year when I applied. I took a random language course when I could’ve taken one or two more GE classes for the requirements.
