2017 - 2018 USC Transfer

I had a general question regarding transferring. For some other schools im applying to due in march as well as usc , is consulting my school’s counselor a good idea? I go to a UC not a CC so im not sure if doing so will upset them because im trying to leave their school…

and for letter of rec for my other schools, how early of a notice should I give my professors?

Thanks

Hi! Does USC accept electronic transcripts sent directly from a CC?

@flipforashley_ I asked this a few days ago, most people said either electronic or by mail is fine.

If one course covers two GE categories, does it count twice and fulfill both categories?

@smileesarefree yup

@gottastudy54 I would consult your counselor anyways. If your mind is made up about transferring, your counselor should assume that whether you receive help from them or not, you want to transfer, so they might as well help you anyways. I consulted with my counselor and I go to a 4 year university as well. I even had my academic advisor write me a letter of recommendation. I don’t see why it would offend them; people transfer schools all the time.

Does anyone know if they tend to admit more junior applicants in the fall over sophomore applicants? Obviously GPA is a huge factor (I currently have a 3.85 for any newcomers here who aren’t familiar with my stats), but I know that credits matter quite a lot as well during the admissions process. I would really like to get fall admission just cause I will already have 57 transferable credits after this semester. Don’t really know what I would do during the fall if I got spring admission because we have to complete 2 of the GE classes at USC, and I will have 5 or 6 already completed by the end of this semester… I know that I want to take Calc 2 (4 semester units at my local CC) next year (not required) and possibly the required lower division writing course (3 semester units) at a community college (ONLY if the required composition/literature class I took at USD isn’t an exact equivalent to WRIT 150 at USC), but other than that, I don’t have anything else planned, and they only accept a maximum of 64 credits to be transferred anyways. Any advice or input? Haha

@cassidylynnn most junior applicants get fall admit while most sophomore get spring admit. It comes come to how many credits you’ll have by the end of spring. @zettasyntax for example had 90 units by the end of spring and despite being a junior he was admitted for spring. And some juniors can hear back as early as April (hopefully me, 68units right now)

@pomeranian4rich do applicants start to hear back before may 31st, or does everyones decision come out at once in the same day? What’s the earliest you may be notified.

@Skepta applicants with TTP can hear back in march through June. By June 1st you can hear a decision or a sgr

Hello all - came across this thread for fun now that i’m on my way out and graduated from USC a few weeks ago, thought id shed some light and some encouragement for you all and to the die hard applicants.

I was in your shoes not too long ago 2 and half years ago to be exact. Started at a JC - De Anza College worked my ass off and dreamed about attending USC Marshall as a transfer. Like many of you I religiously checked my status reports on my application, looked what was being said on this thread and waited for what seemed forever to hear back from them. I had a 3.7 CC GPA and kept it there for the two years while I was at CC, which was right on the cusp of average GPA for Marshall Admits - so you can imagine I was sweating bullets to find out.

I toured campus twice, submitted a hand made binder with accomplishments and crap ive done over the years (called a brag book), attended every transfer seminar they offered, believe me I wanted it bad.

In the end it all paid off - attending USC was by far one of the best decisions ive ever made in my life. and for those of you who get in congrats, get ready for the most fun/competitive atmosphere you can ask for in a college experience. The Trojan family is a real thing, its network is more than just a tagline. For those of you who are lucky enough to experience it make sure you grab every opportunity possible because you will experience things most people wont (including my close friends who went to other colleges…ucla hah).

Anyway not sure what else I wanted to say here but good luck to you all and most importantly - Fight on.

@cassidylynnn I actually had 100 transferable units for usc, so @pomeranian4rich was pretty spot on, haha. I was in the same exact position. There was absolutely nothing else I could complete at my CC and I was well over the max units I could transfer. I tried to plead this case to everybody I could at usc (deans, my advisor, etc), but they did not seem to care. I even sent a letter to the USC prez and just received a generic reply from the dean of Dornsife rather than anything directly from him. I did pretty much nothing at all during the fall; not even travel =|

@zettasyntax what did you do for fall then? Work full time?

Hey everybody I’m pretty new to this. Applying for transfer admission as a sophomore. Was wondering if someone could chance me and give any additional advice based on what they see.

School: Viterbi Engineering
Major: 1st: Comp Sci 2nd: Mechanical
Attending a top 50 engineering school right now
1st semester GPA: 4.00
Courses completed:
Calc 1, Chem 1, Earth Science, Intro Writing Course
Currently taking:
Calc 2, Physics 1, Econ, Intro to Comp Sci
Credit hours: 32 by the end of the semester (Also have AP courses I can get credit for if that matters)
EC’s:
Currently in career oriented club at college
High school:
Won state business competitions
Varsity athlete
Honor society
Essays: 8/10 I’d say, I wrote about my lifetime pursuit for knowledge across all disciples as my reason for wanting to transfer.

@zettasyntax That’s so frustrating… I understand why they give many sophomores spring admission because they probably want them to go to a cc for fall and complete some more GE classes so that they can start taking most of their major classes when they arrive at USC, but that makes no sense that you were given spring admission even after completing 100 units. Crazy. Atleast for sophomores, it doesn’t stall their progress towards their degree because they probably haven’t completed the maximum amount of GE courses that you can transfer to USC when they apply, but for applicants like us who are pretty much junior standing (I am technically a sophomore applicant at USC, but according to literally everywhere else I applied to, I am a junior; I am 3 units away from junior standing at USC with 61 units–57 units if I am not counting the 4 elective credits I get from a 4 on an AP test), it sucks because we just have to sit around and do nothing for an entire semester and resume our academic career in the spring, so instead of graduating in Spring 2019, I could be graduating in Fall 2019 if I got spring admission, which kind of sucks. Really hope that doesn’t happen because I don’t want to graduate later than expected.

@cassidylynnn I think that junior applicants who have borderline stats will receive a spring admit regardless if they have 100+ units. I think that applicants with impressive stats would be given priority for fall admits. I don’t know how USC fall and spring admits work exactly but the may be the case

@guitar333 Hello! I am glad to see another sophomore applicant applying to the Viterbi School of Engineering. Your GPA is very strong and the units you will complete by the end of the spring semester will waive any ailments you encountered in your high school studies. However, I may be entirely wrong, but I noticed that you are not taking an english course during your spring semester. To my knowledge, if you are taking English 1A in the fall you would need to take English 1B in the spring. Again, I may be wrong but if my last statement is true, you would need to take a class that follows up on your Intro Writing Course. Other than that, you have taken the appropriate math and science courses that will transfer. Hope this helps.

@guitar333 the GPA and major requirement completion will definitely help, but you’ll probably need to have more GE classes (maybe from your AP’s?) because that is one of the most crucial factors in being accepted as a sophomore. Admissions like won’t care too much about the Econ class besides for maybe elective credit (Business, Accounting, and Econ majors are required to take Econ courses at USC, so it doesn’t transfer too well), and honestly it would surprise me if the intro to Cisco class transfers simply because it’s a major related course and it’s an intro course for a program other than USC’s. I’m applying for Business so I don’t know too much about how Viterbi goes about reviewing applications, but in general the GEs are very very important. Best of luck!

@ivctransferusc @guitar333 that is correct, forgot to mention that in my post. This may not happen to you, but to my knowledge, USC won’t even consider you for admission without 2 semesters of writing because it is a university requirement

@pomeranian4rich well good thing my stats aren’t borderline. I mean a 3.85 is well above the average 3.7. I’m trying to do even better this semester. I didn’t even bother sending my mediocre SAT scores because I have well over 30 transferable units. Crossing my fingers for a good outcome!
