2017 SETC

I know you can join SETC at a member (which is required to audition) at the conference. There are tables to do so. However I am thinking it may be too late to audition as a junior. I think the deadline has already passed for that. You could attend and go to workshops and still visit the college fair though.

@KTVoice - While your friend’s S may not get the audition experience at SETC, he can get some very valuable guidance at the workshops geared for HS students. If no one else is guiding him, this would be a terrific place to gain knowledge from the “horse’s mouth”. Without the distraction/stress of auditioning, he can take full advantage of all the workshop offerings. The folks at SETC headquarters are very nice. If you/he calls/emails them Monday they may be able to expedite his membership sign-up (although I’m sure they’re crazy busy this week).

Thanks @theatrework & @mom4bwayboy I will let his Mom know.

Thinking of all auditioning at SETC today!

Dance calls are running late . . . students are worried about making it to callback times. Skip a dance call to go to the callback? Ugh.

We had to miss call backs, but the audition experience and college fair for my high school junior was more than worth the price of admission!

A LO-O-ONG day. . .

Awesome @vistajay ! I wish I had known about this when my child was in high school. You are giving your child a great head start!

@mom4bwayboy I am home, but my sweet husband is at SETC with our D. It has been a really long day for them. It’s been a great chance for Dad to see her world. He is very impressed and sympathetic at the same time!

I wonder what an average amount of call backs were for the HS juniors? I know most are just invitations to learn more about the schools but I was curious.

@mom4bwayboy and @janne006 if the day was long, that means there were callbacks involved (or is that bad assumption)??? Sounds like a great day for both of your MT’s.

Yes, @IfYouOnlyKnew! Now the waiting game to see what actually pans out. . . Why does it seem like we’re constantly repeating the senior year of HS? Could it be that this is “the MT life”?? Hmmmm. . . .

@vistajay - when S was a HS junior, he received “many” callbacks (double digits) (a tall male with extensive dance training, decent voice, good acting background). Of those, one turned out to be an offer of prescreen waiver (S ultimately applied/auditioned at that school); 2-3 were “promises” of modest scholarships if he applied (S did not apply to those schools for various reasons); approx 3-5 were for summer intensives or “professional” training, with “possible” scholarships offered; others were, “come hear about our program”. Yesterday, as a college junior he received several callbacks (double digits) for summer stock at SETC (and has had similar “success” at other summer stock unifieds over the past three years - OTA and SETC). Of those callbacks, the majority were, “come hear about our summer opportunity” spiels, and/or “drop off you resume and headshot”; some were, “come to our venue and audition for part X/ensemble in the next few weeks”; some were, “We loved you! We’ll be in contact in the next week or so” - then crickets. . . Only a few of that total asked him to again sing something or read “sides”. Ultimately, he has received about 3-5 legitimate contract offers over the course of three years (one came very late in the season, after someone else apparently dropped out of his contract). To be fair, there were some venues that S was not very interested in pursuing - due to travel distance, compensation/housing issues, that particular summer’s repertoire, “reputation”, other competing interests, etc, - so theoretically, there may have been more “offers” left on the table.

I’m pretty sure hurry up and wait is the norm going forward @mom4bwayboy . Congrats on callbacks. That’s half the battle.

@IfYouOnlyKnew Yes! Callbacks! And they went well, so now we wait! She just needs ONE summer job!

Son got 33 call backs, which seems like a lot except that there were something like 200 programs there. He could not stay for call backs but did talk to the Open Jar folks. Anyone familar with that NYC summer program?

My son knows 4 kids who went to Open Jar last year and loved it! They go to 4 or so Broadway shows and get to meet with Broadway actors. He is going this year!

My D was offered a spot a few years ago, but it conflicted with Stagedoor. She likely would have gone if there wasn’t a conflict. Seem like decent people in charge.

We just got home from SETC today. D (HS Jr. )- straight acting- had around 35 callbacks. We saw at least 1 girl with over 50. D talked to about 16 of the schools. Was actually offered artistic acceptance at two of the schools and a couple of prescreen waivers. Most were just invites to learn more about the school. It is very hard to tell how schools decide who they call back. I think some of the non audition schools are simply trying to talk to kids who are not familiar with them or their area. Several non-audition schools in our region did not call my D back. Several audition schools from all over the country did call her back. It was a good experience to allow her to audition and do workshops. She was able to identify some schools she is now interested in, and she also crossed off some schools that she didn’t end up liking. I know this is MT forum, but thought our experience might be helpful. I realize MT has more competition but I still thought the experience was good regardless of intended plan.

Students have been getting some offers this week from SETC professional auditions . . . .many still waiting!

So far, S has one terrific offer from a well-regarded summer theater, but logistics/money greatly impact the feasibility. They want an answer straight away. Where’s the crystal ball when you need it?
