2017 Windows on Wiliams (WOW) Discussion

The application is open

https://myadmission.williams.edu/register/WOWApplication2017

I participated in it last year so ask away if you have any question.

Hi @williams2021, thanks so much! If a student applies early, does she get an acceptance or denial early? Additionally, is it better to apply early (now) or in the summer? Thanks!

I submitted my application today.

“You’ll receive an email notifying you of your WOW decision by Thursday, August 17”

@absolutevalue I think it is better to draft now and submit it later. Don’t use the first idea that comes into mind.

@williams2021 Is this rolling admissions? so those who apply early have slight boost?

@williams2021
The writing prompt has changed this year to
“In lieu of a traditional application essay, we ask that you submit an essay or paper written for an English or history class during your 2016-2017 school year. Submissions should be between 300 and 1,500 words. The topic does not matter—this is an opportunity for you to showcase your academic writing.”

I was wondering if I should submit an essay I wrote for QB (which discusses my background) or an academic paper I wrote for my English class (research paper).

@YoLolololol Ah, I guess they are looking for academic writing skill this year rather than storytelling. I am not quite sure if questbridge essay would be considered as academic writing, so you should email WoW to ask. If they approved, I think a background paper will be a better paper than a research paper because emotion is always better than no emotion.

@williams2021
“Academic writing skills” and “storytelling” are not mutually exclusive.

@YoLolololol
Your QB essay should be fine. It represents YOU in both aspects.

@williams2021 What was the experience like? Please provide details on what students will do. Did it help solidify your decision to apply to Williams? Is that where you will attend?

@magnetnh So we arrived there at about 5P.M. We hang out with our host and walked around the campus for about two hours before Williams hosts a formal dinner for WoW attendees to get to know one another as well as know the WoW staff. After the dinner, there were a few things planned out: hill hiking, movie night, hanging out with host’s friends. It was raining that night so the hike was cancelled, and I decided to hang out with my host at the late night snack bar. The next day, we went to classes and I also went to the on-campus recruiting event as well as the local annual cloth sale. The second night, we had another formal dinner and we get to meet and talk to professors from all the departments. I pretty much tried everything that Williams students do in a day. It was an eye-opening experience and so I applied and got in ED. The fin aid was not enough for my family’s need, though, and so Williams allowed me to apply to other schools in the RD round. In the end, I chose Williams over Dartmouth, Swarthmore, Middlebury, etc… because Williams offered the best fin aid package out of all. What I noticed at Williams compared to other LACs like Tufts and Hamilton is that Williams students are more active in the classroom.

@williams2021 Thanks for the detailed description. Glad to hear that you will be attending Williams. Do you still keep in touch with other WOW participants? Are any of them attending Williams?

@magnetnh Personally, I know at least 5 people who attended WoW and is going to attend Williams this fall. I know for sure the number is a lot more because although WoW is a good event to learn from Williams, there weren’t many events for WoW attendees to get to know one another.

@williams2021 Thanks again for the info.

@YoLolololol I emailed the admissions office and they said it is not rolling admissions.

“We have two deadlines for the WOW application, July 1 and August 1. For students that apply by July 1, they’ll hear a decision by July 17. For students that apply by August 1, they’ll hear back by August 17. It is not rolling admissions, as we reserve plenty of spaces for students that apply by August 1. If you’d like to get the application submitted, we can then update your application once your AP scores come in. I think that is probably the easiest course of action, as long as you have the SAT or the ACT score available by your application date.”

Since I’m retaking the ACT and SAT in June I think I’m going to apply after the July deadline

@williams2021 Couple questions, first I wrote an English research paper but it is longer than the suggested amount of words. I there any way I can see if they will let me submit that or should I submit something else? Also, does anyone know the general acceptance rate for the program? What are the main criteria they look at?

Wait so they said we can update our AP scores once they come out if we decide to submit July 1st?

Will we receive our decision by July 17th if we applied by July 1st? The invitation email indicated that if we apply by deadline 1 (July 1st), we will receive our decision by July 17th but the confirmation email after submitting my app said I will receive decision by August 17th…

@YoLolololol I talked to Williams they said you’ll get the results by the 17th it is a typo on their part.

@kassh4
Thank you! Did you apply by deadline 1 too?
