I'm heading out to Rochester next weekend for the 2018 experience.

What can I expect from that event? Is it worth it to sign up for the overnight stay? Any insight will be greatly appreciated!

We did this or something like this. My kid stayed in the dorm and a had a great time. I think stuff like that helps you see what people are like.

We went to a bunch of talks with various deans and counseling offices, all in fairly small groups, which is a contrast to the fall. And we spent some time driving around the city - mostly without our kid - and getting a handle on life there. It was worth the trip.

@Lergnom - So your child stayed in the dorm overnight?

My guy stayed overnight. It helped confirm to him that he had found “his people.” Otherwise, yes, there are a bunch of talks about all sorts of different topics. For us, it was worth going.

Awesome!! We are flying in from west coast so I’m glad it’s worth going :)

Yes, my kid stayed in the dorm. (I thought I was clear.)

College is a big deal. It’s a big expense, a big choice. It’s not an irrevocable choice: kids transfer. I’ve always found it amusing that, in some cases, people note x transferred out without understanding other kids are transferring in. But if you can afford the trip, it’s a good thing to do.

In our case, we put down the deposit as we were leaving. It just made sense. And graduation is about 2 months off.

@Lergnom - that sounds wonderful! We are also visiting schools in Boston after U of R and hopefully we can make a decision after that.

Any recommendation for restaurants in Rochester?

There are many good restaurants. Don’t go to the chain places in Henrietta.

Any number of the places along Park Avenue are good. Lots of people frankly love Dinosaur BBQ - which is downtown - because it really is a great place. Another BBQ place popular more among locals is Sticky Lips.

BTW, I live in Brookline, which is surrounded by Boston, between BU, BC, Northeastern, Simmons, Wheelock and on and on and on.

Having been to both Dinosaur and Sticky Lips, our whole family prefers Sticky Lips… it’s not even a close comparison (but others have different tastes, of course, so who knows what you’d prefer).

There’s also Sinbad’s for Mediterranean and I think it’s called Java’s for coffee/sandwiches.

I remember Obama ate at Magnolia’s but really there are many good places.

@ekmy326 do you know what time it starts and ends? there seems to be no information about the timings on the website or in the conformation email.

Tell me how it went! I’m going to the 2018 experience in April!

Bamba Bisgro and 2 Vine, Max’s of Eastman Place for nicer restaurants. We love Magnolia.

No real place to mention this: tonight is stress relief playtime with puppies in the Commons. They do this about once a month.

If you’ve never been to a Wegman’s (grocery store), try to go the flagship store on Monroe Ave. in Pittsford…amazing store!

Lergnom–D graduated 2 yrs ago, I still have Dinosaur BBQ withdrawal symptoms!! They’re opening one in westrn CT–maybe one day they’ll reach us in the Boston area!

I kind of hope they don’t make it to Boston because odds are they’d succumb to the city and go all mediocre. For BBQ in Boston, I like Soulfire in Allston. But then it’s also close to my house, which helps.

One of my and my kid’s favorite Rochester restaurants is The Owl House, which is in an old house not far from school. Some meat dishes and a lot of vegetarian/vegan choices.
