I would imagine that they feel you are in the range of students they would accept.
I would imagine that they are trying to recruit more diverse students, of which you are one.

Invitations to SOAR at Rice are very selectively given. In the past, an invitation to Rice’s SOAR program has been a very good predictor of admission to the university.
