***2018 National Merit Finalist Thread****

Hey, its correct that the person adding a letter of reccomindation to the nmf app should be a school offical like my guidance counsolor, right? My GC and the person in charge of filling out the high school part of the nm paperwork have been asking who I want to write the letter? I told them I dont get to see the instructions for letters of recommindation but the gc’s rec should be fine…

Okay, I’ve sifted through the USC Class of 2021 decisions thread. It looks like some NMF candidates received something like this in January:

Is that part of an acceptance letter? I’m not clear. But then several NMFs on that thread received decisions in late March. Example:

And this from a seasoned poster, on a different thread from 2014:

So, yes, I am confused. :slight_smile: I suppose we will expect to hear a decision in late March, and if we get good news before then, we can celebrate.

@FSUdad93

The scholarship is the same for resident and non residents, the $ is different because OOS tuition is higher. The COA includes transportation and personal expenses and OOS transportation is factored at a higher rate. Depending on books and excluding personal expenses and travel, I’ve figured that we will have pay less than $1,000 a semester it’s just really hard to estimate books. DS will be applying for some outside scholarships to help cover his book costs and UTD does allow stacking of merit based scholarships.

Tuition: 100% covered by NM scholarship

Room and Meals: $11,112.00 - $11,000.00 = $112.00 a year

Books: $1,200.00

Financially seems to be a good deal. It’s such an individual thing isn’t it? I don’t know yet if my D would like the place, environment, academics. We’re thinking it’s at least worth a college visit.

@xpd600090 I hear you about the individual thing. My DD16 is NMF at OU and LOVES it while DS18 hated OU but loves UTD. Financially Texas Tech is the best deal, true full ride with stipend for transportation, books, personal expenses but my DS has zero interest because of the location.

Thanks a lot! UTD is on our short list.

@FSUdad93 I just posted this in the UT Generic college forum not sure it the Amazon HQ2 deal will happen it would but the artical has some good info on UTD like the number of NM students number of degrees…

https://www.dallasnews.com/business/real-estate/2017/10/02/ut-dallas-richardson-higher-ed-offer-amazon-hq2

@3scoutsmom I think location is a large factor in S preferring UNM to TT. Part of it is vibe & culture, part of it is the specific geography, and part is that ABQ is a lot closer to home.

@3scoutsmom thanks for the article link, that would be great if it happens! I think if Amazon chooses any Texas city for its second HQ it would be good for all students in Texas, but having it literally right next door to UTD would be even better for our sons!

Shout out to the patient and helpful people at NMSC! I’ve called several times during this long process and have never had to wait on hold for longer than 30 seconds, and they’ve always been quick to find answers and very polite. This morning I called to check that S’s NMF application was complete including all the items needed from his school, and the rep was able to confirm that S is good to go. If you, like me, are anxious to know whether your/your kid’s application is complete, it is truly painless to call NMSC and ask.

@traveler98 , I need to do this , NOW. what info did they need when you called?

@davidpuddy, today I offered S’s NMSF id number (from the parent confirmation email I got when he completed his part of the application) but for previous calls they just asked for identifying info you would easily know such as birth date. Because I had the NMSF ID handy it seemed to make it even faster for them to pull up the file, but it isn’t necessary.

I’m also still waiting for my D’s school to submit their part of the NMF application. Her GC says it will be done by Wednesday, but I wish she wasn’t cutting it so close.

Doesn’t the website show if they have received the materials? On my D’s sign in page it says: “You submitted your portion of the application on 10/4/17.” and then “Your completed application was transmitted to NMSC on 10/06/17.”

That’s it then, right?

@kcheves, that would make me nervous too but I would be surprised if they punished the student if the materials from the school are late.

@suzy100
Yes, that is what DP Jr.'s says well.

But, did you know, I am a pessimistic completionist?

I hadn’t considered that @suzy100. I hope it doesn’t come to that, but thanks.

I am currently having trouble finding out whether or not I am a National Merit Semifinalist.

My PSAT score from 11th grade has a selection index that is one point higher than that required by my state for 2018 (NH - my score is 218 and the cutoff is 217). When I log into college board, no asterisk is displayed next to my score and I meet all of the eligibility requirements.

I did not, however, receive a notification from my school that I attained Semifinalist status. My guidance counselors have not received any notifications from College Board or the National Merit Scholarship Corporation either, and I have not received any emails either. I have tried contacting both organizations over the phone, but both are currently out of office. I am getting nervous because the deadline for schools to send in applications is Oct. 11 (I believe). Is there anywhere I can find out more information and confirm that I am/am not a semifinalist?

Also, is there anyone who has the list/“the book” for NH that lists NH NMSF? Maybe I can check to see whether my name is on that list.

Thank you!

I have been checking the NMSC website and can see that D’s school has not yet transmitted their portion. The school is closed today and Wednesday, which leaves only tomorrow for the GC to complete it. :-S D submitted hers on Oct 2nd.

@peachgiraffe , that is worrisome indeed! Send a direct message to @jswani who may still have the book, and call NMSC tomorrow! Please keep us posted.

@peachgiraffe Call NMSC first thing tomorrow morning. They were likely closed today for the holiday. Do not bother with College Board. Yes, the deadline is the 11th. First thing tomorrow morning!
