@chercheur It is sad that others cannot celebrate with you. Not uncommon, but still sad. I love seeing announcements and sharing the excitement of jobs well done. I don’t see anything wrong with noting honors in graduation announcements, Handle it however feels best for all of you, and you can always come here to CC to be among folks who cheer academic successes with you!
@28cats Don’t you think for a minute that admissions departments would be bothered to get NMF announcement updates. They WANT to know those kinds of things. That is the information they are making their decisions on. Some schools will have gotten the information directly but you can’t be sure. You need to advocate for yourself. Just a quick note is fine.
For those OOS considering U of MN, I urge you to be careful. They just approved substantial OOS tuition hike for both this year and next and dropped scholarship amounts.
We live in state and my daughter received their highest merit aid award for in state and it is still not competitive with other out of state offers and she is no longer considering it. If she was from out if state I would be very slow to consider it. Also their honors college does not offer substantial benefits.
It is a great school and an urban setting if you want that and you do get used to the cold. But it is cold and snowy here fully from early November through mid March every year.
@MNacttutor - nice job selling MN - cold and cheap
Was your D offered the full $10,000 for the Gold or less? Would like to know if they are cutting it down for the in-staters too.
If my DD chooses a college that gives a scholarship for NMF, does that mean that she will not be in the running for the
$2500?
depends on the school, OU gives students that don’t get the $2500 that amount as part of their award so everyone gets the same package. Some schools give it in addition to their NM package like UTD other schools will take it out of their FA offer if the student qualifies for need based aid.
@SEPAINTER no you can still win and potentially stack. Emphasis on potentially:) .
i’m sorry to be so dense. Does the NMF foundation give awards of $2500? I read an article that 2500 of the NMF will receive $2500.
Does anyone know if a student receives the $2500 award if they have to return it if they get a full ride at a school b/c of their NMF?
That might be a dumb question. This is my first time.
@SEPAINTER if it is a “true full ride” like Texas Tech that pays for everything travel, R&B personal expensese like tooth paste, then the student will not get the additional NMF money. if the student goes to a school that pays full tuition, books and R&B but not extra for travel and personal expenses they will likely get to keep the NMF $2500 as long as they are not getting need based aid as well.
@SEPAINTER yes $2,500 awards are from NM.
Every school has what they call an over award / stacking policy to address this situation. Typically they publish a Cost of Attendance that includes tuition, average room and board, a book allowance, and some limited amounts for personal and travel expenses. If student gets outside scholarships like NM $2500 award, they can only stack on top of merit from the school up to the total COA. If excess above the COA they will reduce the merit the school offers down to eliminate the excess.
The general good news I have found is that the “full ride” is often a little bit under the COA. So you can net a little more money to offset some expenses you weren’t necessarily counting on (travel, books, supplies, etc.)
sorry. @LOUKYDAD I did not see your response before my second post. thanks!
An administrator tracked me down at robotics (because I do full time dual enrollment off campus) to give me my NMF certificate today, so mail has reached WA state!! Not going to a school that offeres a NM award so really hoping for that $2500.
thanks for the help! Liberty University offers full scholarships to NMF (tuition & R&B) but already I have seen that the math isn’t all adding up 100%, so we shall see when we are notified. Are the $2500 scholarships announced now or later?
@SEPAINTER I read on NM site they will notify the $2500 winners on March 22nd (date they mail to the home).
@TexanIndian Colleges will receive notification of students who listed that school as their #1 choice. The first lists go out in March. (There has been discussion here about the best strategy - all speculation, really.)
Students definitely should email their college admissions offices to update about NMF!
U of Nevada-Reno gives $16k per year, which is full tuition, partial room and board for WUE students.
My son was notified yesterday that he is a finalist. He is most likely not going to a school that offers a scholarship for NM. Should he put his top 2 school choices in his NM profile or just leave it empty? Is there a benefit/drawback to doing either?
@“Kathy V” and @Mnacttutor - thanks for the info. I’m learning so much from this site. I felt like we had looked at every aspect of every college, but I hadn’t thought about tuition hikes (and it is good to know ds got as good of a scholarship as he could have).
I really like the NM scholarships that are worded as “full tution” instead of a dollar amount because they aren’t affected by tuition hikes. DD16’s OU National Merit was worded as full tutiton so even when they raised the tuition and fees her tuition portion of the bill was still covered.
We are in North Texas still waiting for finalist notification. Our school is not known for doing this quickly or efficiently :).
Do we know if there is a PDF that has the entire list of Texas students like the semi finalist list?
