@ajewodk dude that is a very good application. I mean your grades look rly good and your ec’s look pretty nice, like model un. I wanted to do that but there’s none of those around me here in kinston. You don’t have to take the SAT essay I don’t think bc is when I did the practice SAT the person said that you could the essay if you wanted. It is actually pretty easy, because usually they don’t care about what you are saying if you know what I mean. All you have to do is act as if you’re writing an essay really on structure. Now I got a 1200 on the new SAT, which is Ok but I plan on self studying to get around a 1300-1400. Assuming your EC’s I think you could do better :).
I have some friends who got in and then went to Duke who are really smart. Really they said it goes to about 5 things in order. 1. Grades(what your number average is in courses and what types of classes: Ex-98.3 like mine. Remember just take the hardest you can possibly take but don’t take like ap theoretical quantum physics in 10th grade lol, you really should be fine). 2. EC’s (what you do outside school: from what they said, ncssm likes leadership roles and stem stuff. I think you and I are on this. Considering you seem interested in politics, talk to your local representative or candidate to volunteer. For me, my parents have been into politics since I was real young and it took me a real long to move up to a fellow in the Democratic campaign. Just try to volunteer and go out and see something new.) 3. SAT(really if you’re a 100ish points above the average SAT in your grade you should be fine. I don’t think we should sweat on that lol) 4. Essays(just write a personal story and don’t sound cliched). 5. Teacher Recommendations(in the next year just be able to be a teachers pet)
The last two are not as important but can be the difference I guess.
What CD are you from too?
Anyways, best of luck, and hopefully we can President Vice President of all of NCSSM. Lol
Hahaha that will be awesome @iphoneuser23 And I am from CD 9 (Charlotte Meck) which is the second competitive district (that’s what I heard) after CD4.
Hey guys, I am from CD 5. I currently have a weighted 4.43 and ranked 1 in my class (4A school).
My next semester schedule:
AP Stats
Honors Civics
Honors Biology
Honors Orchestra
Honors Chemistry
Honors English (might change to AP English 3)
PE (required)
Honors Chinese 3 (took Chinese 1 and 2 in 8th grade)
I am taking honors pre-calc online right now. New sat:1460 essay:21/24. Freshman year I played football and basketball for my school’s JV team. This year I will probably double roster for football (don’t know for basketball yet). I am going to try to do robotics or Model UN but I probably won’t have any time. I’m really nervous because other than sports I don’t really have any EC’s. What are my chances?
WOW! 1460 SAT score and your GPA sound really impressive (Especially your sat score).
Your sports sound good because I heard NCSSM wants well rounded people. And yeah, robotic club or Model UN sound good because they are both related to STEM. I think you have a really good chance!
I also have a quick question to ask you!
Did you study SAT by yourself? got a tutor? camp?
How long did you study (how many hours a day, and for how long)? And what books did you use to study for the new SAT? Was this your first time taking sat?
I think your SAT score is really impressive and your GPA is also really good so if you think doing more ECs will mess you up, I recommend not doing it because your grades, sat, classes already sound good. But if not, go try them!
@ajewodk I took the old sat in 7th grade and got about 1760. I took a small study class (30 hours) at the nearby college but I felt that using Khan academy was the biggest help. I studied about 3 to 4 hours a week 2 months before the test. During the class I received the official practice book but I only really used it during the class. Have you taken math 3? I felt that after I finished that class I learned everything on the math portion of the test.
Cool! Your response really helped me prepare for the SAT. I think I am going to take mine soon. Probably in October or so. And no, unfortunately not. I am taking math 3 next year @microguy123
Hi, does anyone know if your own grade at your school factors in to you being accepted? Just asking because I have a friend who will most likely be accepted and another friend applying.
@Abracadabra16 In my grade at school, there are 3 people applying, including me. We all have around the same grades, but one is the valedictorian. Will I be hurt in this situation?
Hello! I’m going into my sophomore year this year and I live in CD2 based on the new 2016 district map. I go to a fairly limited school in the matter of clubs and other school based ECs. I ended my freshman year with all A’s, a 4.0UW/4.3125W GPA and ranked 3rd in my class.

I may take an extra class online this year, but I’m not sure yet
EC: In elementary school I won overall in my school for the science fair all three years I was eligible (shows I had interest at a young age). In Middle school I participated and placed in Envirothon 2 years in a row, and did 2 years of cross country and soccer. As a Freshman I was a member of Student Booster Club, and a Math team that participated in an event at ECU, I didn’t do much volunteer work maybe 20hrs+, I ran with the cross country team and devoted lots of my time to learning about audio engineering as well as architecture. Over the summer I went to Design Camp at the NCSU College of Design. I plan to continue Student Booster Club as well as the math team but also join STEAM club this year and volunteer much more. I play multiple instruments and take part in a multitude of other sports non competitively. I haven’t taken the SAT yet but I will in the fall/winter.
Tell me what you think! Anything more I should do this year? thanks

I usually score around a 1350 on the practice SATs I take and there’s only 2 of us from my school applying
Hey guys - I’ve posted on here before but lots has changed haha. I think I’m in a much more competitive district now.
I went to a high school in the west coast for 1st semester of my freshmen year, and then moved to Greensboro, NC to finish the year. I took:
Honors Biology, Honors Spanish 3, Honors Band, Honors English, Honors Math 3, PE
I got all A’s and ranked 4th in my freshmen class.
Then I moved to Chapel Hill (east), and unfortunately I am behind due to moving. So this year I am taking:
Honors Chem, Honors World, Honors English, Honors Civics, PLTW IED (Engineering), Honors PreCalc, and AP Spanish.
I’m really sad that I can’t take more AP’s, but I think my engineering class is weighted the same as an AP class.
I’m pretty worried about my SAT score also, my best score is a 1260 (new SAT).
I have my own club of volunteering/teaching for the youth in need, and I am in the Robotics Team and a local youth symphony, and I am planning to join Model UN and SciOly. I am also in iGem (an international genetic engineering competition). I play the flute (5 yrs) and I have gotten several awards, and I have completed up to level 7 for this musical test (only in West Coast). Also - I’ve received the Presidential Award of Excellence graduating middle school. I volunteered at the hospital this summer and I plan to volunteer at the animal shelter this year. I have been swimming for 5 years, but took a break, and I am going to start again.
What do you think my chances are, especially since I am in a very competitive district now? (CD 4 or 6, I’m not sure)
@spacebunsweetie I’d say you have a pretty good chance, since not many from your school are applying & you have a good SAT score. Also you’ve taken and are taking lots of science-related classes, which is pretty helpful I guess. Good luck!
